500mA fan to replace 300mA GPU fan. Will I burn out my GPU?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:22 PM PST

I'm replacing my graphics card fan and Amazon shipped me a higher amperage fan than in their screenshot. The old fan on my GPU (Zotac GTX1060 Mini) is a 300mA 12V and the Amazon one (same manufacturer) is a 500mA 12V. Will this fan pull too much juice and kill my GPU?

EVGA GTX 1080 FTW MEM only run at 405mhz

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:34 PM PST

Already tried reboot/reinstall driver/update bios, in GPU-z, the memory type shows "UNKNOWN".

Yesterday I flashed to strix bios, then encountered MEM afk issue, so I already flashed back to the FTW bios, and MEM still won't function properly. I'm having 15fps in Rise of the Tomb Raider, and even can't get 60fps in Card Game.

PC sparked and can't figure out whats wrong now

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:35 PM PST

So my pc was running, it sparked, and turned off. Smelled burnt. I couldnt get any sort of lights or fans going no matter what, so I replaced the PSU. Now I can get limited response; the lights and the CPU fan turn on, when I have the atx cable in. However, when I plug in the CPU power cable, the motherboard just beeps forever.

How do I completely turn of windows update reminders and make sure windows will never update unless I allow it?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 02:54 AM PST

    Hello,

About two months ago my laptop updated to the Windows Fall Creators update. This messed with my photoshop, all my games, and my Huion AND Wacom tablets. This issue was so severe that I was forced to roll back to the previous version.

Ever since then, Windows kept reminding me EVERY SINGLE DAY to update to the new windows version. This can be highly frustrating, especially when I'm playing games.

Yesterday i decided to give the new update another try (cause u was extremely done with the constant reminders.).

Everything was still bad. Still stuttering in games, still lag on Photoshop, still tablet issues in such a way that I just couldnt properly draw.

This got me to roll back to the previous versionn AGAIN.

I do not plan to update this laptop ever again. this is why I'm asking for a way to turn off the reminders. and to make sure Windows never updates without me allowing it.

I have tried several things to fix the issues but the list is too long to work on as a busy student that needs this laptop every day.

    Anyone that could help me?

    Specs:

Windows 10, version 1709 HP OMEN intel core i5 7300HQ CPU 8GB RAM 64 bit (please ask for any more info, not sure of all I should put here.)

15mbps on phone but poor connection on Xbox and computer

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 12:16 AM PST

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or some kind of explanation for my issue. I tested the internet speed on my phone and my 4G is running at 15mbps upload and download and the ping is at 88 or higher so I think it's pretty decent. Yet when I connect my Xbox it computer up to my mobile hotspot, the connection is terrible even though it's literally right next to it. For instance on my laptop I'll be testing the speeds and it'll be either at 0 or very low speeds and fluctuates with poor connection.

When going on Netflix or Hulu on my Xbox, it'll have to buffer quite frequently.

I'm not sure WHAT the issue is. I don't think it's my consoles and I can't imagine it's my phone. I just don't know what the problem might be. Never had this issue because I've never had to have internet through my phone.

My phone is a Kyocera through AT&T if this MIGHT be needed.

Will a usb c to lightning adapter work with headphones?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 12:12 AM PST

I have a pair of nice earbuds that come with two interchangeable cables. One is a 3.5mm cable and the other one is a lightning cable with a built in DAC and amplifier. My android phone doesn't put out enough power to drive the earbuds to their full potential so I was hoping that I can get one of the usb c to lightning adapters I see on amazon (like this one) and be able to use the nicer cable. My gut tells me it won't work because the cable is probably locked down in typical Apple fashion but I hope I'm wrong.

Edit: My phone is the OnePlus 5t and the earbuds are the Audeze iSine20s if it's relevant.

New gaming PC enters power management randomly.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:17 PM PST

My new gaming PC will randomly go into power saving mode (power management) and the only thing I will notice is the GPU gets less power so I get FPS drop. The screen stays on and everything just switches from "high performance" to "power saving"

    Pc specs are intel i7 8th gen, GTX 1080, 32gig ddr4, 500 gig SSD, 2TB HD, and a 460watt PSU,

I can't figure out what is causing this to happen.

    Dropped my mac...please help

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:55 PM PST

Bag broke, mac fell to the train platform. Dented in one corner. Now, when I touch it, it makes a weird clinking/high pitched screeching noise (but only when I touch it/move it around). The noise is emanating from the back, near the center of the hinge. What could this be? I really have to get some work done tonight....is it safe to do.so? I haven't backed it up yet and nothing is open until the morning. Please pardon my complete lack of technological knowledge....I was never that type, and is why I come to you.

    Hardware Compatibility?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 03:43 AM PST

    Sorry not entirely sure the best place to ask this but here goes;

Would I be able to use something like this with an Xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver? Some controllers come with a wireless USB dongle to plug in and connect to, and I am not sure if the controller would be locked to that or if I could also use any other 2.4ghz receiver?

Ping spikes at constant 10 second intervals

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 03:32 AM PST

While playing last night, I started getting very weird lag spikes, where my ping would jump into the 1000's all the time, came from no where as I was playing fine most of the day. Not normal for my internet.

After hours of google, I've come here to for help.

    Windows 10 PC using WiFi

I have a ping test constantly going, and at exact 10 second intervals, the ping jumps from 60-70 all the way up to 800-900 for only 2 seconds. This is happening EVERY 10 seconds.

I'm using wifi, so I have a signal strength analyzer running, and when the spike in ping happens, there is also a dip in signal strength, the software isn't accurate, but you can see the dip very clearly.

At the same time as the dip, I also lose the ability to pick up neighbours wifi (they disappear from the list for 1 second).

Anyone have ideas I can try? The WiFi adapter in my pc is new, only a few months old.

How to have no default browser in windows 10?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 03:16 AM PST

I don't want to have a default browser, when I click a web link (for example when somebody emails me a URL) I want it to ask me which browser i want to open it in because I use different browsers for different things

It always used to do this, but then yesterday I accidentally ticked the "always use this app" box in windows 10 and now it doesnt ask me anymore it just automatically opens in chrome

I cant find in settings or in google where I can make it forget my choice and go back to having no default browser

I tried forcing association of .html files to nothing with cmd and whilst it works for .html files on my desktop it doesnt work for URLs in emails

Any advice would be much appreciated

Is my motherboard dead? Small prize if anyone can fix

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 03:01 AM PST

    Hi,

I recently tried installing a new hard drive into my gaming Pc (roughly 3 years old now and I built it myself back then as well), and after the new hard drive was installed, the Pc suddenly only started powering on and then turning itself off after 1 second, and repeating this cycle over and over until I unplug it.

    What I've done/tried:

Set up the mobo on its own on a cardboard box outside the case with only CPU's 8 pin power, 24 pin power, one stick of RAM and CPU plugged in, as well as the CPU FAN 1. The problem still persists.

I've using each stick of RAM on its own into every slot and every combination possible so this can't be the problem either.

I've tried using an alternate power supply and have the same result, I've also used a paperclip on the PSU and it works fine so we can rule that out.

I've tried resetting CMOS by removing battery for 10+ hours, and also by shorting the CMOS pins which creates a blue light. I've also used a new CMOS battery replacement from a different working gaming PC. So this isn't the problem either.

Ive made sure no pins are bent, I've made sure there are no screws shorting the motherboard by contact, in fact there's none left in the mobo right now as it's on cardboard.

Been troubleshooting for 3 days now and still can't fix this. Thinking it may be fried, but what's strange is that the mobo still powers on for a short second but then turns itself off. The red lights come on for that short second as well meaning power is still being delivered to the board.

I only have my phone as Pc is obviously dead but I will still try and record a video to upload shortly of whats going on.

    Specs:

    MSI gaming 5 Z97 mobo

    16gb corsair vengeance RAM

    I7 4790K CPU

Corsair rm850 PSU (this works fine as explained above)

Other components are all unplugged so not sure if they matter

Any help is appreciated, if I can't fix it by today I will probably just build a new system, there's a small monetary reward for anyone who can fix this for me before I shell out on a new Pc.

    Thanks

    How to parent proof computer?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:10 PM PST

I'm visiting my in laws for a week. They are in their 70s and don't speak English very well. I gave them an iPad a couple years ago for email, but the storage is full from pictures and videos.

I figured it's time to get them an actual computer so they can offload pictures from their iPad and iPhones. I just bought a laptop from Costco for them. After uninstalling the bloat and installing teamviewer so I can provide tech support to them, what else should I do to this computer?

Is there any way to solve it or does it mean that it is hardware problem and I have to replace hardware (warranty expired long ago)

    Low FPS on new laptop

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 02:31 AM PST

I got a new laptop, don't really know much about it though in terms of what it will be able to run, and I'm pretty novice. Its got an AMD A9 9410 3.5GHz CPU, Radeon R5 M420 2GB GPU, 8 GB DDR4. It seems to struggle to run games my old laptop handled at a decent framerate, so was wondering what sort of level of game I should be able to play?

For reference the first game I noticed it in was Metal Gear Rising. Any advice would be appreciated!

How would could I have known what would happen next :(So I used my googling skills, found out that the solution was a bios update. No problem for me, I have been there and done that!Went to msi support site, downloaded the lastest bios update, followed all the instructions from another laptop. Every step was a breeze, it did the update. Said that flash update is successful, press any key to reset. After that it rebooted, but to a black and blank screen. No logos or boot selection, windows whatsoever. I tried resetting the EC firmware, but it didn't do anything.I did some more googling, but all I can find was to send it for RMA.However the beast is out of warranty now, since it has been more than 2 years. Please help me save my little sisters computer, otherwise I won't be the tech-savvy genius hero. I will be the stupid brother who bricked her computer :(

    Laptop buzzing

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 02:23 AM PST

So i clumsily dropped an xbox one controller onto the keyboard face of my MSI laptop, it fell a good 8 or 9 inches from my hands to the keyboard. Now the computer won't go into standby regardless of what i press or whether i close the actual laptop itself. In addition to that there was an immediate buzzing noise coming from my headphones plugged into the jacks. I unplug them and the buzzing noise goes away. But when i put them back in the noise comes back at the same noise and frequency. What should i do?

    Computer is endlessly "restarting"

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 02:21 AM PST

    https://youtu.be/kobeHssu6Eg

I made a video so you can see. I read that I needed to press F8 in 1 second intervals in order to start the computer in safe mode. I've tried this at least a dozen times to no avail.

I can bring up an advanced menu but it only deals with bios and I tried starting the computer up in some safe bios setting (I don't know something like that) and the computer just kept saying restarting.

This stems from me trying to install Windows updates. I stepped away from my computer for a bit and when I returned I click restart and it just says restarting. Left it like that for an hour. Trying powering off but it just cycles back on. I need to close the laptop for about an hour and try turning it on again.

Any advice? I really need to do some work today

    Thanks!
