This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Will be using this for 1080p 75fps gaming. Would like advice on the mobo + case, those are the two parts I'm most unsure of.

PC Camp @TheLibrary was a success!

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 11:29 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I am a youth librarian that ran a PC building camp this week. We had some grant money available for technology and I decided to use it to upgrade the Teen Computers. I bought parts for 3 different builds (some recycled, all new w/apu, and all new w/ GPU) The kids had so much fun building and learning. They couldn't believe that it is actually cheaper to buy parts and assemble a computer than it is to go out and buy pre-built. I got some good advice from the fine folks here. Thanks for a great community! For the recycled PC, we reused a power supply and SSD. For the all w/GPU we used the Ryzen 5 1600. We also used 16gb ram in that machine.

Build almost ready need help finalizing

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:22 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Rs4yD2

The above pc partpicker is the build that I am looking at building.

The only thing I have is the Case and the 5700 XT Sapphire.

The only purpose of this build will be to play WoW Classic with zero issues and potentially other games in the future if I get back into computer gaming. Also want to make sure that this is a little future proof.

    Questions:

    1. With this build will the case be enough to keep the temperatures low or should I look into buying additional fans?

    2. Is Ryzen 3600 really the way to go here or would a 9700k be the way to go or a 3700x?

    3. Can I use the 1 TB NVMe as my storage without getting a Sata or HDD?

    4. As for the PSU I have zero idea about which one to get. I'm sure I chose and overpowered one for my build but i don't know what would be a safe one go get so I don't fry my system.

    5. I plan on getting the b450 max when it gets released in the states however if it takes to long I will just get an X570. Which X570 is currently the top recommendation and also what is the benefit of a 570 over a 450 except for the BIOs? Or if a 9700k or 3700X is the way to go which mobo is best to go with it?

If there is anything else you think I can change please let me know!

I have a PSU from a previous build I can reuse as well as another SSD (SATA not m.2).

My primary goals will be to stream at a reasonable quality and play 1440p @ 144hz...or thereabouts, on a variety of games from AAA to Stardew Valley. I would like something in a small-ish form factor. I understand the h200 (probably will get the h210) is not the smallest, but it seems to have a lot of features and decent cable management. I am down to go a little premium, as I am treating myself a little bit and moving on from a ~$500 budget build from ~5 years ago with a donated 780ti. However, I don't want to overspend for the sake of overspending. Going to grab a Blue Yeti and a decent 1080p camera as well.

I may play with overclocking at some point, but will look into an AIO solution when that time comes (or is there a good reason otherwise?). As I understand, the 3XXX have very little headroom as it is...so it may not even be worth looking into?

    I have a few questions:

    1. Is the 3700x worth the $140 premium from the 3600 for my use case? And/or will the 3700x "future proof" me as games take advantage of the additional cores?
    2. Is there a better suggestion for the motherboard? I don't think I care about PCI 4.0...which would be the only reason to move up to an x570, right?
    3. Memory options? Decided on 32gb because, why not?
    4. Should I wait for more of the AIB 5700xt releases? I can play with my 780ti in the month or so it takes for more to hit the market, or is the Pulse about as good as it will get vs. price?

Really appreciate the advice, and happy gaming :)

Hey guys looking to make sure this GPU will fit my computer

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:44 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm slowly trying to get back into computer gaming after 10 years away. I'm trying to slowly build a new pc but for now just upgrade the one I have to make due.

I currently have a gateway FX6800-01e. This one, https://www.cnet.com/products/gateway-fx6800-01e/specs/. Ive upgraded to 12gb ram and also put in a new sshd. I know that it's not gonna be powerful by any means but would like to at least be able to play some newer games.

I'm looking at Saffire pulse RX 570. It's showing $122 right now on Amazon and would like to just make sure my Mobo can run this at all.

Should I buy a expensive pc? Help

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 03:05 PM PDT

I want to switch from console to pc because I like keyboard more and better graphics and I need a better pc do do some other stuff.

I have put together all my parts but it's 2000euro and I just don't won't to spend so much if I'm not even gaming competitive or grinding any game (I'm playing r6 and destiny 2 and indie games I want to play cyberpunk 2077)

It's a 2k build with monitor in that price but is it normal that it cost so much

I want to just have a sound card, some good cpu and gpu to do some unity just small 2D games for my hobby and watch some movies on a tv

But I also want to spend money on my room like soundbar good tv etc

So what should I do because I used unity on a dell factory desktop the prebuilt from 4 years ago and it was fine so should what can i use to not spend so much

Need Help With My First Ever PC Build (ASUS Prime x370-pro, AMD Ryzen 7 2700x, AMD Radeon RX580)

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 04:59 AM PDT

So I ordered all the parts for the first ever PC build in my life. Just to make it clear to anyone here, see my

    List Of Parts

    • MoBo: Asus Prime x370-pro
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
    • GPU: MSI Armor RX580 (based on AMD Radeon RX580)
    • RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB, 2666MHz, DDR4
    • PSU: Corsair CX 650M (modular PSU, 650 Watt)
    • Case: NZXT H500

Everything arrived and I assembled it (note that I was using an ESD wrist band bonded with the case).

    Made Sure Everything Fits

    • CPU (AM4 Socket) is placed in the correct orientation
    • Ram Sticks fit into placements, locks snapped
    • GPU fits into placement, locks snapped, screwed to mounting bracket
    • MoBo is screwed in place (note on the built-in raisers on the case)

    Connected All The Required Cables

    • Connected the EATX Power Supply (24 pin)
    • Connected the CPU Power Supply (8 pin), Connected the 4 Pin Cpu Fan Header
    • Connected the SPIe 8 pin Power Supply for the GPU
    • Connected the Power Supplies for both SSD and HDD
    • Connected the SATA cables to the MoBo SATA plugs and the drives respectively
    • Connected BOTH Ram Sticks into the 2nd and 4th DDR4 Ram Slots
    • Connected Audio, USB 3.0, Case Fans, Front Panel Power Cords

    What Happend On First 'Boot'

I plugged in the PSU to a working outlet and pressed the cases power button, at the time a keyboard, mouse and monitor (via HDMI cable inserted into one of the GPUs slots) were connected - it booted up, the fans started to spin and it kept spinning. There was no video coming from neither the GPU's nor the CPU's HDMI slots. The build kept on running (fans spinning, LEDs illuminating) for about a minute before shutting down by itself.

Consequent Attempts To Power Caused The Following Behaviour

    • Fans start and stop spinning for a few times then start spinning regularly (shutdown after 30 secs)
    • Fans start spinning and immediately stop (for like 1 sec, immediate shutdown).
    • Power Off, Unplug PSU, wait, Power On - same behaviours will occur again in a 'loop'

So I Researched The Problem, None Of the Below Steps Worked

    • Fans starting and stopping 3 times - power cables not connected properly (not the case) (Source)
    • Remove Mobo From Case, remove Drives and RAM (Source above)
    • Unplug and Plug In all Power Supplies Again (Source above)

More Source and Even More Source

PROBLEM - NOW THE PC WONT BOOT AT ALL!!?!

Okay, I start feeling very intimidated, I plugged in all the parts again so the setup was the same as at the first time booting, conntected PSU, pressed Power Button - DEAD, NO REACTION.

Atr this point I basically unplugged and plugged in again basically everyhting, I even attached a leftover Piezo I have onto the internal Speaker pins but since it wont boot at all, none of the solutions worked.

So At Last Resort All That Was Left To Try Was

    • Jump The RST pins
    • Jump The PWR pins

None worked, now I am stuck with a build that wont show any signs of life (note that the MoBo RGBs keep on illumniating, that's all what's left) after I tried several troubleshooting steps.

I am now afraid I might have broken or shorted anything in the process, allthough I would not know how.

Furthermore, there is literally noone I can ask for help on the matter as none of my friends and close relatives know anyhting about building a pc let alone ever had any experiences with it.

Also I cannot spare any parts since my only other pc is a laptop.

What should I do now? If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment, I am so afraid I just trashed some parts by doing something wrong.

Wondering if these parts is the best I can get without breaking the bank

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:42 PM PDT

I'm going to build a pc and was planning on using the following components:
    GPU: Asus gtx 1660 ti
    CPU: Amd ryzen 5 3600
    MOBO: Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO
    RAM: Corsair DDR4 16gb 3600MHz
Aswell with a PSU of 600W and 2 SSD.

Would these be good together? Or is there any improvements I can make within the same price range?
Appriciate all the help I can get!

    Half of RAM not detected.

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:38 PM PDT

Help! Please see my previous post here too. I basically upgraded my Gpu and removed ram (I have 24 gigs of mixed ram and I wanted all dimms to be the same) and after removing some ram my PC wouldn't boot. It now boots again, but with only one of the 2 corsair dimms I have showing up. I need the complete 16 gigs, not 8!!!!

Please help. I've tried reseting the RAM, but it either results in my PC not booting, or in only half if my ram showing up again. If it helps, I think the pc won't boot with one of the ram sticks, but will boot with the other. Will I have to RMA it???

Ended up buying a prebuilt pc from Best Buy bc of mislabelled price.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2019 08:52 PM PDT

I went to Best Buy to start my process of building a pc. I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable about technology but I have no clue about building a pc. The sales rep at Best Buy (who I know) was very knowledgeable and was trying his best to help me get the parts I needed but could tell I was getting confused. I walked him over to the computer section to a prebuilt demo CyberPowerPC I had been looking at the week before that was $1400. I told him that it might be easier with my limited knowledge to start with this and then start upgrading parts. The actual computer box was on the shelf below the demo but misprinted as $1150 and said he has no choice but to give it to me at that price if I want it. I bought it and thanked him profusely for the good deal.

The question is should I have still tried to build my own pc?

    Dual-PC Streaming setup

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 04:44 PM PDT

Need a PC build solely for streaming, trying to run a double PC streaming set up, but my single PC can't handle it. Playing fortnite (game i'm streaming) is fine, hits about 200 FPS on the settings i'm running, but streaming while playing is a no-go. So i'm thinking of getting a seperate new PC to handle the streaming while i'm gaming on the current one. Thoughts?

Still on the fence about the case, I really like Focus G's aesthetics but I'm still thinking if Cougar MX330-G or Cooler Master Masterbox Q330L can give better airflow. I decided to keep Bitfenix Whisper as according to Linus' PSU tier it counts as a Tier A+ and I'm able to get it at a quite affordable price.

I'm on a budget so I have to save as much as possible. Comments and suggestions are very much welcomed!

Need help picking a motherboard for 3600

    Posted: 21 Aug 2019 02:29 PM PDT

I've decided to upgrade my PC, and I've settled on a Ryzen 3600 CPU. I need some help picking out a motherboard, and I would greatly appreciate any help you guys can give.

    • My goal is a upper-mid/lower-high end PC
    • Primary workloads are VR Gaming and Game Development (Unity, VR, C#)
    • I plan on 16GB RAM initially but may upgrade to 32GB later
    • I'll be keeping my existing GTX 1080
    • I do not like RGB and don't want to pay extra for it, but don't mind buying a board with it as long as I can turn it off
    • I won't be doing any overclocking. My priority is stability, not bleeding edge performance (within reason)
    • I do not have access to an older gen Ryzen, so am I going to need a motherboard with Flashback? or has enough time passed that one of these should be updated already?

With all that in mind, and my small budget, I've been looking at the following boards, each of which are around $80

    • MSI B450-A PRO
    • MSI B450M Bazooka
    • GIGABYTE B450 AORUS M
    • Asus Prime B450M-A/CSM

So far I'm leaning towards the MSI B450-A PRO, but I'm not really tied to any of these. If you guys have another board at a similar price point I'm all ears.
