    Refurbished Lenovo YOGA 720

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:10 PM PST

I just bought a refurbished yoga 720, but it already had a user account on it. Is there any easy way to remove it without reinstalling windows? Is that a common thing with refurbished laptops? I tried to do some quick googling and didn't see any definitive answers one way or another.

Side note: It also didn't come with a styles pen, was it supposed to?

Should I get the aSUS UX330UA, or the lenovo yoga 720?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 09:56 AM PST

Both laptops have the 8th generation core i5 CPU.

The ASUS has 8GB DDR3 RAM, 256GB SATA SSD, and a matte screen.

    The Lenovo has 8GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, and it's a 2-in-1 so it's a touch screen.

Those are the main differences in terms of specs. I think the ASUS has better battery life, and I hear that Lenovo is an unreliable brand, but something about the Lenovo still attracts me.

Any input would be greatly appreciated...

    Buying new laptop

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 12:15 PM PST

Hi, I'm new too this subreddit and reddit in general and I'm not sure this is the best place to ask but I need some help to buy a new or used cheap laptop. I already have a desktop used for gaming and I want a laptop easy to carry to work in simple things like small programming, surf on the web and not much more. I just want something thin and light, with at leats a intel pentium or equivalent, minimum of 4gb RAM and some ROM space. If anyone knows a laptop with this specifications, I would be happy if you helped. Thanks in advance and sorry for my not very good english.

Whether to replace or repair laptop?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:44 AM PST

I've been using this laptop for a while ( 6 years old at this point ) and was planning to replace the overly large and terrible HDD with a 250ishGB SSD, but it's mysteriously developed a whole bunch of dead pixels after 90 seconds of my girlfriend borrowing it..

It only gets used for MS Office, general web browsing and Visual Studio, so I'm really reluctant to upgrade, but I'm also not particularly happy about the bill to make it better suddenly growing by £40, probably be closer to £150 for the SSD and a screen replacement now.

Just looking for a nudge in the right direction really, most laptops with similar specs seem to be priced just insanely nowadays. Is it even worth upgrading?

Cheers in advance for any input!

    1. Reformatting

    2. System Restore

    3. Disable the 'Display Refresh Rate Switching' under Power options in Intel HD Graphics control panel

    4. Updating display drivers

Are there different thicknesses in Blu-ray drives for laptops?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:02 AM PST

Because I recently bought one off've someone, turns out it was to thick. So I decided to look for another one online, and that one to was also to think, which leads me to believe Blu-ray drives are thicker than DVD drives? Is that really so or are there thinner ones available?

New vs. old. The drive looks bent but it's not. Shitty Sony lenses.

Just how much stronger is an i7-7700HQ over a i5-7500U in gaming?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 10:27 PM PST

I recently bought a base model Dell 7577 with an i5-7500U and a GTX 1060. I love it, but recently I've been wondering just how much faster the i7-7700HQ model is (In terms of raw framerates) as I can't seem to find any comparison videos for the two, and my older laptop was the Dell 5577 with the i7-6700HQ (but ofc had a weaker gpu).

If anyone had any info or charts for this, It would be appreciated as I'm generally curious.

Samsung galaxy book 12inch or asus transformer 3 pro?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:48 AM PST

I recently sold my Samsung Tab Pro S and I am looking for an upgrade from that, I like the 2in1 form factor because it works well for uni and huge specs has never been a huge issue with this as I already own a main gaming rig so only need the laptop for note taking and work and the occassional bit of netflix and youtube.

I was originally going to get the galaxy book however I decided to look and saw there is a price available at the same for the transformer 3 pro and so now I am stuck on which to get.

As someone who owned a samung device already I feel like I would miss having AMOLED a lot however I also love the look and style of the surface pro which the transformer 3 pro resembles more.

If anyone has had experience with either device or both some suggestions on which to get would be amazing! I would get a surface pro but the lack of USB type C has lead me to not wanting to get it as of yet, that and that higher price point and lack of type cover on purchase.

    Thanks!

[Need Recomedation] Portable Laptop for around 1k

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 04:40 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: The total budget is 1000usd, but I would be willing to go over if the laptop is good enough. As usual, lower prices are preferable. I am purchasing in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like it to be a 2 in 1, but I prioritize good specs, portability, and a good battery life over this. A thin laptop would also be nice.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness is extremely important. Has to be portable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Don't require any sort of OS, I am more than fine with linux, chrome os, windows, or mac os.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Prefered screen size is 12-14 inches, but if portable enough a 15 inch one would be sufficient.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do some photo and video editing. I would likely be rendering the videos on a different machine. For gaming, I would be playing light titles like roblox or csgo

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't require that good FPS, 60 fps in csgo would be nice but it's not really something that would be used much.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't care much for a touchscreen, fingerprint reader, or an optical drive, but a good keyboard and decent build quality are both necesities.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion I was thinking of going with a refurbished Razer Blade Stealth from the razer outlet. I already have a decent desktop gaming rig that I use for most things, and this laptop would be used mainly for text editing, watching youtube and netflix, browsing the internet, and schoolwork.

Is getting a cheap $20 battery(18650 type) for my 5 year old laptop worth it?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 06:25 PM PST

I have a 5 year old Sony Vaio Fit 15E that has a dead battery, and I cannot afford to get the official $120 battery made by Sony, and those parts are hard to find since Sony stopped making Vaios long time ago.

But I found a cheap $20 battery on Aliexpress, and the reviews are pretty good. Should I get that $20 battery? I have to use my laptop until 2023, because right now I don't have money ($10 per month right now), and 2023 is when I go to college.

I always put my laptop on my desk, and I sometimes need to carry around my laptop once a year.

I'm looking for a laptop for work purposes that can be used heavily. I narrowed it down to 3 and would like to seek an educated opinion. Which of the listed laptops is the best buy?
