Just a quick reminder that Windows 10 upgrade loophole will ends tomorrow.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:16 AM PST

It has been two months since the announcement about the closing of Windows 10 free upgrade offer. However, there is still a chance to get upgraded before the December 31st, so go get one now before it's too late!

Windows equivalent of Jack Audio or PulseAudio?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 04:49 PM PST

So this a bit of a strange one, and I'm not entirely certain I'm in the right sub. I'm certain it's not a fault in windows, it's more like a lack. This in Windows 10 Home v.1709

So I have been trying to isolate certain programs to specific outputs. For example I want Chrome to play on my wireless headset, but Spotify to play in my earbuds. This is possible in certain applications due to a option to this (Diablo 3 comes to mind), but is lacking in the applications I listed above.

So what I technically want to do is have each application have its own controls for which output it will sound through. This I thought was possible with a virtual mixer, but after extensive searching I think it might not be. Instead I think it might be simpler to have each audio source act as it's own input.

What I think i want is an application similar to JACK Audio Connection Kit or PulseAudio. Is this what I am after? If so, are there any alternatives more specific to windows, and even more specific: win10?

I know that windows uses the Audio Stream Input/Output which I think is the windows equivalent of JACK Audio Connection Kit and PulseAudio.

    • Is this possible?
    • Do I have to modify windows in any way?
    • Are there any better options?
    • Which would those be?
    • How much work would this be?
    • Have anyone done this before?
    • How did it go?
    • How did you do it?

Question about Microsoft surface Windows 8.1 webcam

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 04:00 PM PST

So I was surfing 4chan and left for dinner. I came back to my surface being asleep. I clicked once to wake it up. I realize I'm looking at the feed for my webcam. My webcam is on. I have never used my webcam. I don't know how to use my webcam. I don't know how to access it. I clicked and it took a picture of my ceiling as it was folded and I was using an external monitor. Is this normal behaviour or is someone remotely tampering with my surface? Could someone do this from me posting on 4chan?

Can't retrieve files from old hard drive.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:50 AM PST

I just got a new SSD today and installed a fresh copy of windows on it. I intend to use the SSD as a boot drive and the old hard drive as a data drive.

However, I can't retrieve my old files because I don't have permission to view them. How can I get permission when I'm the owner of the files?

    DPI Question

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:39 AM PST

I'm running the latest windows 10 update on my gaming laptop. I have a 1080 display, but at the 100% DPI value, things are pretty small to read. So I increased it to 125% in windows (which it says is recommended) and it looks much better. The problem is games. With the value at 125% it throws everything out of whack and makes the HUDs huge.

Is there a setting or something I'm missing that will allow games to run without bumping the scaling up?

Media Creation Tool for 'N' Versions of Win10?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:53 AM PST

    Hello all

I'm currently in the process of planning a reinstall of Windows (Moving from SATA to M.2 and doing a clean install while I'm at it.)

I use an N edition of Windows 10 Pro and have done so for the past couple of years but when I downloaded the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft recently, the only listed version was 'Windows 10'

I've read that Home and Pro were combined to make the new 'Windows 10' selection but does this include the N versions as well?

Any information is greatly appreciated thanks!

    Question about deleting files

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:19 PM PST

So, I made a folder that I put everything that I download or use in. The problem is, that folder is in C:, but C: has very little storage available. Because of this, I dragged the folder from C: to D:, which has plenty of storage available. I checked, and both folders are identical. Can I delete the folder in C: without losing the folder in D:? Sorry if this question is hard to understand due to the way I typed it.

Need help to install Windows after Lubuntu

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:17 AM PST

Hello, Reddit. A friend of mine asked me a while ago to make their old laptop run a bit better so I hooked them up with Lubuntu, a dear OS for me which gave a second chance for my much underpowered PC. They were very happy with it, but now they need to revert back to Windows as it's a criteria for signing up for an online internship. I thought the procedure would be as simple as installing any clean copy of Windows, but upon choosing to cold boot from my USB device, I am met with the Gnu Grub OS selection screen. I just can't find a way start the windows installation. Does anyone have any advice?

Upgrading to Windows 10 with OEM

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:15 AM PST

I've been lurking for some time to find info about my questions. Problem is, the info is often contradictory. I'll post them here to clear some things up.

My current Windows version (8.1) is an OEM and I've been looking to replace the final parts of the old prebuilt. These parts will be the mobo, cpu, ram and hdd. As I've understood it, if I upgrade to Windows 10 and link the computer to my Microsoft account I will get a digital license. Does this mean that I can replace these final parts without having to buy a new key?

Second, the prebuilt was an ASUS build. System info currently says that my computer is manufactured and handled by ASUS. Don't know what it exactly entails, but still wondering. If I upgrade to Windows 10 and replace the parts, will this still remain?

Thanks, and sorry if this is not the right subreddit for these questions!

Can I use Win7 key to activate Win10?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 12:18 PM PST

I have a windows 7 pro cd and a key that works, and I read that an update allowed you to use win7/8.1 keys on windows 10. I am doing a clean win10 pro install off of a usb, can I use that 7 key to activate?

I want to uninstall 'Windows 10 update assistance' in my add/remove settings

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 11:04 AM PST

As you may be able to tell from my title I am not exactly an expert with computers. I have a general knowlege, thats about it. My laptop is a windows 7 and I'm perfectly content with it. For the past few weeks every time I turn it on I get this popup/message telling me that it wants to do security updates but in order to do so it needs to download windows 10 first. At first I was like, 'Okay. whatever. Do what you want'. But then I'll get a message that says it wasnt able to download and the whole damn routine starts all over again-- I turn out my laptop, I get a message telling me it wants to download windows 10, ext., ext.

I want to go into the add/remove programs of my computer and just remove it. But before I do that I just want to make sure its an okay thing to do first. I know I'm probably being silly; But I dont want to accidentally remove anything vital

    Thanks

FPS capped at 60 after creators update.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:11 AM PST

Recently got a gaming laptop and received the creators update, I have a GTX 1050 with one of the latest i7 processors, saw my FPS jump to 150 on BF4 for a minute before going down to 60.

Has anyone been able to fix this issue? I've tried disabling game DVR, GeForce experiences overlay and many other things but it's still capped.

[Help] Apps won't open directly from start menu, opens windows store instead

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:27 AM PST

So I have to launch every downloaded app from the store, pinning it to start or taskbar won't work. It doesn't even show in the search results or app list after I switched to local account trying to fix this - it's still installed and can be opened from store. Help.
