Total budget and country of purchase:

less than 1700 gbp, 1200 range is ideal.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I'd prefer the best specs for the money and good battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

i would ideally carry it everywhere so weight and low footprint is extremely important.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 inch is preferred but i understand better specs can be found on a 15 inch, so can make do with a portable 15 inch. but 13 is definitely preferred.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will only be running photoshop and lightroom, my only requirement with this laptop is that it run these as smoothly as possible, i think i will need (32 gb ram/i7) for this, so a laptop with it built in under budget or one where i can upgrade the ram later would be preferred.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

i dont play any games on my laptop.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like a good ips screen, 1080p is sufficient if its a 13 inch model.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

looking for a portable laptop under 1700GBP (1300 gbp ideal) that is easy to carry and run photoshop smoothly.

Help me pick a reliable laptop

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:52 PM PST

    Hi,

I have a Surface Pro 3 which I used when I studied at the university and I think it's time to replace it with a new laptop.

I need a quiet reliable, fast laptop with a batterylife that isn't too bad.

I have been looking at Macbook Air (2019) (the one with 8gb ram 128gb ssd) Macbook Pro (2019) (the one with 8gb ram 128gb ssd) Surface Laptop 3 (with i5, 8gb, 128 gb) Vivobook S14 (with screenpad) Zenbook duo (not pro)

Now the pricerange is wide and the most expensive one is the Zenbook duo. Is it worth it? Or is it enough with the Vivobook which is the cheapest one on this list?

    Any thoughts? Any other tips?

Budget is up to 17000 SEK (Sweden)

Weight and thinness isn't the most important thing but I would prefer if it isn't too heavy

Preferred OS is windows or Mac

I won't be doing much gaming, won't be doing CAD but maybe some video and photo editing. I will mostly be working in Microsoft Office so I want it to be comfortable to work with.

Switching from PC to Macbook, whats my best choice if I plan on mostly doing digital painting on Photoshop?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:02 PM PST

I have 0 clue about macbooks. I was a diehard PC guy back then, but now I dont really care. Im going into the animation industry and I dont need a huge PC right now. I just need a proper mackbook to get the job done, which is Digital Painting and animation. Looking around the $900 range, preferrably less.

I'd prefer a screen size close to 20 inch. Im in the United States.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Any suggestions on when to buy a laptop - now vs. Black Friday vs. after Christmas?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:33 AM PST

I've heard stories of manufacturers making specific TVs and other electronics of lower qualityjust for Black Friday and I assume the same goes for laptops. Does anyone on this sub have experience with that?

I'm planning to get my daughter a new laptop (Windows (but NOT S mode), under $1k, 15in, just for school and some gaming like The Sims - open to suggestions!) but I can flexible with timing and want to know if I should buy now, look for Black Friday deals, or wait til just after Xmas?

    Student Laptop with decent power

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:14 AM PST

**Total budget and country of purchase:**

800€ with a max of 900€ in case there is something like a better processor for a small budget raise

    Country: Germany

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

It should last around 9 or 10 hours when only using it for word or surfing on the web

The best specs for the price would be great.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Weight and thinnes are very important. It should be a good balance between the lowest weight possible and the necessary weight to give the processing power it needs.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Windows or MacOS (although I believe there will be no Mac within the price range)

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

The Laptop should be 13" since our tables are pretty small, if you get a better deal for 15" I'm willing to take that too but bigger than that shouldn't be an option.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

It should be able to run small Java programs and it will be used to edit Video (usually 1080p and max 2k with 60 fps) in Premiere Pro

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Its very unlikely that I will game on it

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

It should have a SSD with at least 256GB and have a reliable build quality since it should last throughout my time at university and hopefully even longer.

I would love a "satisfying" keyboard experience such as the Lenovo Thinkpads

A finger print reader would be great but is not necessary if it exceeds the price range

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I know I wont get the best workstation possible for my requirements. 2k 60fps video editing requires a quite powerful machine (I assume) but I'm okay if it takes 5mins instead of 2 when it comes to rendering. It doesnt have to be the fastest but shouldn't be the slowest either.

If it is possible I would love to have a somewhat modern design. Even though I love the keyboard experience on a ThinkPad they look a bit dated to me and I'm willing to sacrifice such small things if it looks a bit more modern.

I'm looking forward to your advice and already want to thank you for helping someone that does not know too much in this tech-area!

Need help with the final pick

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:05 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I'm helping a friend of mine out who's looking for a new laptop. She's a university student, so the laptop would mostly be used for office-and-research stuff (which means lots of tabs in a web browser, multiple PDFs and stuff like that). However, she also likes to draw so a good screen is appreciated and she loves playing Sims 4. Her old (2012) MacBook finally kicked the bucket and so she asked me to help her look through the forest of the topic. Her maximum budget is 800€, and we found four options that are attractive to her.

    Here they are:

Now it'd be really great if you could help us decide what would offer the best bang for the buck in regards to her demands; all of those are inside the budget because of various retailing offers etc that are going on at our location (Austria) rn.

Looking for a lightweight gaming/graphics laptop to replace a suffering Dell Inspirion [$1000, US]

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:25 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

Up to $1000, but I can potentially stretch to $1200. I'm in the US.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I'd prefer the best specs for the money and good battery life. I've also gotten used to my 4k screen and would like to have that in my next laptop.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd like a more portable laptop because my work requires me to travel long distance, pack lightly, and use a pelican case frequently.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use Photoshop/Adobe CS3 for photo editing and digital painting. I also game (AAA and indie) as a hobby.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play Skyrim with 60+ mods and an ENB, ARK (offline), and when it comes out, RDR2. I'd like at least 30fps, but would like something capable of 60fps. I play older games on ultra now, and would like to play newer games on high.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

If at all possible, I need a 10-key/numpad. My work requires me to do lots of data entry and I don't want to use a USB one. Because of my graphics work, I would like the color rendering to be fairly accurate. I'd like a backlit keyboard, and a sturdy build. Parts are literally falling off my Dell Inspirion 7559. I'd also like a touchscreen, but it's not necessary and not having one wouldn't be a dealbreaker.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking at the Lenovo 720s or the Lenovo Legion Y740 GTX 2060, but I feel like my last foray into laptop research was both successful as far as getting the specs I wanted, and very unsuccessful in ending up with a laptop that is bolted and glued together despite careful handling, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Looking for large battery and great thermal gaming laptop with numpad (USA, budget $1700)

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:22 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1700, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm looking for a strong gaming laptop with very long battery life and great thermals, with at least a 1660ti or 2060.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer the laptop to be less than 4.5 pounds but it doesn't matter too much. I don't really care for thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, steamvr

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm looking to play VR games on steam with my valve index on at least 90 hz, normal SS settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The only thing I need is a laptop with a numpad, and reliable build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thermals are VERY important to me. My last laptop was extremely hot to the touch (hot on the keyboard too) if gaming longer than 10 mins. I even replaced the thermal paste but the temp didn't change much. I'd prefer to not have to change the thermal paste in my new laptop. I won't plan on heavy gaming without it charging, I just need the battery to last a while doing document editing, netflix, etc.

So in summary, I need a laptop with at least a 1660ti or a 2060, great thermals, a numpad, and a large battery. Thanks in advance.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard for programming/typing.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a desktop that I mainly use for heavy gaming or other programs.

Also have a Chromebook Pro, but it's battery life is dying, keyboard is okay but not convenient for long typing session.

Have been looking at the LG Gram 2019 version. I am on the fence on buying it right away, as I do not know any other laptop, and feel like if I wait until the beginning of next year, I might be able to save more money and get the 2020 version.

HP Spectre x360 VS INSPIRON 7000

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 08:57 PM PST

Im trying to decide between the two of these 2-in-one models for the purpose of content creation: photoshop, premier pro, illustrator, etc.

The models I will buy are in their 15inch and most "souped" up configuration.

So I guess my question is which one would hold more power and longevity as these are my main concerns. I'm not a super techy so I'm not really sure.

Need buying advice - Out of the loop - Balance between beefy GPU + build quality

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 04:49 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget ~$2000, not too concerned; USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not fond of 'gaming' aesthetics, cheap build quality, touch screens, fancy gimmicks like 2-in-1, etc. Constrains are primarily build quality / keyboard quality, and GPU power.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 1440p; no preference between WQHD and UHD.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming: will be running 9 OldSchool RuneScape clients.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The OSRS clients are particularly demanding of the GPU; memory / CPU usage are trivial.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      • good keyboard
    • lack of 'gaming' aesthetics

    • decent build quality (I'm accustomed to older ThinkPads)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I haven't followed the laptop market in years; I'm basically hoping to save a ton of time looking through all 10,000 laptop offerings. The X1 Extreme looks alright, but the 1650/1050 GPU's may be a little underwhelming for my purposes, so I'm curious if there's something out there with similar build quality and a high-end GPU. Thanks!

Does a 4K touch display cut down on battery life as opposed to a FHD display?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:54 PM PST

I want to get a Razer Blade Stealth 13 since it's a small and light laptop with a long battery life and a dedicated graphics card. But the entry model only has 256GB SSD which isn't really enough. The problem is the 512GB model also upgrades the screen from FHD matte to 4K touch, which is kinda unnecessary for a 13 inch laptop imo. Plus, I've heard that a 4K display will cut down on battery life by quite a lot, is that true? I need this laptop to last me through a day at uni, so...
