Laptop for software engineering student, <=800€, no gaming, France Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:23 AM PDT
Up to 800€, will be purchasing from France. I'm willing to pour in more money but only if there's good justifications.
I will most of the time be able to plug the laptop in, however I would still like at least a 4h battery life.
While a light laptop would be a plus, it's not really important for me and I would not want to pay extra for it.
I'm planning to run only Arch on it, no need for a dual boot.
Around 15 inches would be good. I'll be spending a lot of time on it and I have bad eyesight so I do not want something too small.
No.
Nope
A good keyboard is essential, I've tried smaller laptops but didn't like how cramped my hands felt. There should be no need for an optical drive, or any other bonus features. Furthermore I would like to have a good screen quality, 1080p is plenty. An SSD would be perfect, and there is no need for there be a lot of storage. Something reliable that I will be able to use throughout my studies and further down the line would be awesome.
Comfort is a big thing for me. I'll be using this laptop a lot in the coming years, so a good keyboard and screen are essential. Thank you [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Nov 2019 02:05 AM PDT I'm dead set on getting a Thinkpad. I live in New Zealand and a lot of laptops are really overpriced at local stores and shipping costs a leg and a half. Thinkpads are low shipping and on sale they seem decently priced. I can't decide between the T495 and T490. T495 has an AMD CPU which runs slightly faster than the T490 and is $200 cheaper. T490 has an Intel CPU which has thunderbolt. I want to know what everybody uses their thunderbolt port on and if it's worth a lesser CPU. Edit: I plan on getting the laptop during Cyber Monday. The reason I'm not getting a T480 is because it's not available on the Lenovo website and second hand places I know will be selling it at only a slightly reduced price (around $1800 NZD) [link] [comments]

In search of a computer for programming and coding Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:01 PM PDT
There are a lot of sales right now and I am leaning towards the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 and I have looked into the Thinkpad T470 or E595 but I don't want to make a mistake here as I'd like to get one that can last me for a while. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
Early Black Friday deals on Amazon with a full RTX 2070 under 1300$ Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:04 PM PDT Amazon is having a 700$ discount on the Asus ROG Strix Scar II it has an older but still 6 core I7-8750H, a full 115W RTX 2070, 16GB of RAM probably one stick which I highly recommend that you add another one for dual channel performance, 512GB SSD and a very decent build quality however the laptop runs hot and loud so be prepared for some tweaking and a pair of headphones for gaming . Now if you want something with longer battery life for around the same price range then the Aero 15 classic is also 300$ off but it has a GTX 1660Ti instead of the RTX 2070 on the rog . Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 or MSI Prestige 15? Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:37 PM PDT Both have the same graphics cards, similarly spec cpu's, similar displays, similar weight, similar battery capacity. X1 extreme has a slight advantage in the port selection, keyboard, and build quality, but I can get the prestige 15 for at least $100 cheaper even when the X1 extreme is on sale through an affinity Lenovo website. What would you guys recommend? Main use being CAD, programming, occasional video editing, music production, multitasking, and light gaming. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:19 PM PDT Hey Reddit! I am looking for a laptop that well is a all around good machine. Total budget and country of purchase: 1000-1200 USD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and best specs. How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like it to be lighter and thin Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" and up Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly just schoolwork and light gaming such as CSGO and maybe r6 but that is might be out of reach. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to play CSGO at at least 60fps at med settings, r6 would be a bonus. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Yes I would like a good keyboard and touchpad with either back lighting or RGB. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like this build to have a GPU, also I dont want it to look like a "gaming laptop". [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:03 PM PDT Budget would be around $1000 ish. Since I have limited space, I decided to get a laptop instead of building my own PC. I'm sorta undecided between Helios 300 and Nitro 5. I've watched several videos on youtube comparing one from the other. I'm leaning a bit more to the Helios 300 but maybe you can change my mind? if you guys have any other suggestions, I'd gladly take it. Laptop should be able to run MHW, PUBG, Apex, LOL smoothly on high or med. [link] [comments]

MSI GL75 Raider 9SD-072 from Costco review Posted: 01 Nov 2019 08:17 PM PDT I wanted to make this post since there aren't any reviews of this SKU from any of the big sites, possibly because it's a Costco-only item. MSRP $1299.99, sale at $999.99, with taxes $1073.11 This laptop was purchased on October 9, 2019, backordered and was shipped on Oct 24. The delivery was fulfilled by UPS and I can safely say, fuck UPS. They also fucked up the Costco packaging box but luckily MSI's box was unharmed.
The first thing I did was to replace the HDD with a TC Sunbow 3D 1TB SSD. The WD Blue originally inside will be used as an external.
One immediate complaint I have is that the space between the keys and the chassis is kind of annoying when it's there literally just to allow the keyboard lightning to come through.
The back cover is quite difficult to take off compared to, say, my 2009 Thinkpad W500. I'm not sure if laptops now are just meant to be hard to open up. There are 13 screws to remove, then you need to slowly pry the cover open - I used a guitar pick. Then there are 2 screws holding the drive cage to the mobo and 2 screws on the cage to the drive. There is also a spare M.2 PCIe slot. Unfortunately both RAM slots are taken up by 8GB sticks; some other MSI models use 1x16GB instead of 2x8GB. Putting the cover back together was a bastard, so be warned
The laptop itself comes with a Windows 10 Home, which is just annoying. I replaced it immediately with W10 LTSC 2019 and began benchmarking. Benchmarks were done with the laptop sitting on a CoolerMaster pad not plugged in, just to give elevation and space for the vents. This is also in a room climate-controlled at 23C.At least 10 minutes of idle time was given between each test to cool down. CrystalDiskMark on the included WD NVMe SSD isn't 970 EVO levels but is clearly better than a regular SATA SSD. Most of the GPU benchmarks seem about right. GPU idles at 38C, and hits about 69C at 100% load, which is pretty good. However, the CPU idles at 49-51C, and hits 80C by 30% usage, and throttles at 95C about 20 seconds into Cinebench R20. That boy ain't right. At high temps the fans also get quite fast. So I decided to repaste. The heatsinks, heat pipes, and fans are all a single unit held to the motherboard/chassis with 11 screws (2 on each fan, 4 on GPU, 3 on CPU), 2 ribbon connectors, and the connector to motherboard power that's glued on top one of the fans. As you can see, they didn't do the best job in the world. I'm also extremely confused why the CPU VRMs get thermal pads while GPU VRMs get thermal paste - and it's a different thermal paste compared to the gray stuff on the dies. The white shit is extremely annoying to remove and took a lot of elbow grease with Kimwipes. I replaced it all with some 3-month old Arctic Silver MX-4.
Putting it all back together miraculously dropped my CPU idle temps to 39C which is very acceptable. It still rose up into the 90s at full load so a bit of fiddling with Throttlestop (-75mV on both core and cache) with turbo disabled let my CPU take 100% load at 70C, at the cost of about 150 points in Cinebench. CSGO gives a very comfortable 217 FPS in FPSBenchmark, Doom 2016 on High syncs at 144 FPS even in open area fights.
In conclusion, good performance with a couple of tweaks at a great price point.Considering Costco's 90 day return policy and 2 year warranty, I'd say this was a pretty safe buy. If anybody has other tests they'd like to see, let me know and I'll update this post. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:17 PM PDT Hi everyone. Im looking for a good laptop recommendation. I currently have an eye out for the xps15. But just want to see some other good options since I'm not good at reading specs and stuff like that. Or if the XPS is even a good option. Laptop is going to be for personal use. General browsing and video streaming. Probably prefer one that can handle some medium level of gaming. I only play league but my bf plays some random games from time to time. I don't have a desktop so I would really prefer something that will last longer than two years. Prefer something that's under 3 pounds. [link] [comments]
Looking for a new thin and light laptop Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:13 PM PDT context: currently I am in my last year of high school and I am looking to buy a laptop that will last me from now till the end of university so for like the next 4-5 years. In university, I will need to able to use the laptop for programming and taking notes, etc. My budget is around $1500 cad so around $1200 usd I need the laptop to be thin and light and good on battery and I dont want to sacrifice much in terms of power. Currently, I have looked at the huawei matebook 13 with the 8th gen i5 and intel 620 graphics and the asus zenbook 14 with the i7 and nvidia mx150. I also considered the dell xps 13 but it is pretty much impossible to find a new one in that price range in Canada. Other things that I plan on doing on a laptop are occasional light photoshop work or other adobe applications, surfing the web, possibly light gaming. I can compromise on the gaming part but it'd be nice if I could. I am open to any suggestions thank you. edit: found a razer blade stealth for $1200 cdn considering that [link] [comments]
Looking for a 13" laptop for my wife, who is a teacher. USA, up to $1,500 Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:01 PM PDT
A good, full-sized keyboard is a must, as is a good trackpad. She likes her Samsung trackpad and is also familiar with the Dell and Asus ones and thinks they are fine. She hates the HP trackpads for some reason. A number pad would be nice to have, but probably not something that can be had in a sub-15-inch form factor. She currently uses a wireless external numpad. Touch screen, pen input, convertible form factor, etc. are kind of gimmicky and not necessary for her use case. Fast wifi would also be nice. We are getting fiber internet (finally!) this year, so we'd like to be able to take advantage of it. Since we're future-proofing, I'd like a good selection of ports. Ideally at least 2 USB-C for the future and 2 USB 3.1 ports for backwards compatibility. A network cable port would also be nice since wifi can sometimes drop out. Also, and external monitor port. Currently we use HDMI, but we can be flexible on this point as long as it's easy to get an adapter.
Her current laptop has served well for the last seven years, but it's getting sluggish despite upgrading to an SSD and adding more RAM. I want to buy something that she'll love now, and will keep her going for the next seven years! [link] [comments]
On the Look for Light Video Editing Laptop - Cheap Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:51 PM PDT Hello! I am looking for a laptop that is (preferably) smaller than 15.6 inches diagonally, 14 ish preferably. I would like to do some light gaming (Smite possibly, Overwatch, Paladins, etc.), video editing on the laptop as well. One of the more important requirements are a longer battery life, ===I am currently using an Acer E 15 or E5 or something like that. It is pretty nice but it is kinda huge and the battery hardly lasts over 3 hours. It also randomly shuts off at times which is super cash money,=== anyways: The thinner the better, but not a requirement. I guess the better the processor the better. I am not sure how RAM, Drive, or Memory directly affect the performance of a laptop - nor what the better graphics cards are (especially in laptops). Hopefully someone can suggest a laptop that is lower than $1000, the lower it is the better, kinda working on a budget. I know that it is a tall order but I am hoping that there is some gem out there that I am missing or overlooking. Thank you for your help! [link] [comments]
Cheapest laptop option for running Photoshop decently as well coding programs? Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:05 PM PDT Country: USA I had an old bulky rending laptop that was about 6 years old, and a biblical downpour hit my college yesterday and destroyed the motherboard. I went to school for animation and game art for about 2 years and was still working on character sheets every day in between classes. I'll need something light that I can use to keep making art in Photoshop/FireAlpaca, as well as any program that may come up in my current Computer Science path. So far I've only needed notepad++ and a command prompt. I want a windows Operating System, preferably 10. (Will stomach 8/8.1 if that affects price). People have been recommending a Surface Pro but I already have a nice modern Wacom Tablet, so why dish out $1000 for a function I already have? Finally, price point. I already have a rig at home for rendering, so I just want the cheapest option that will run Photoshop very well. I have, at times gotten as high as 100 layers so I need it to handle Photoshop well. If $1000+ is what I need to shell out then fine, but 500-800 would be preferable. (I'm very new to buying laptops so I don't know if I'm asking for a ludicrously low or high price for a laptop). Thanks in advance for whatever answers you guys give, and also thanks for dealing with my laptop newbishness if I say anything wrong or stupid. Tl;dr, Cheapest Windows laptop possible that can run Photoshop well. [link] [comments]
Laptop for Digital Art+Work+School+. Looking for something with great color accuracy! Posted: 01 Nov 2019 12:22 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Under $1,300 USD. United States Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, but good battery life is good to have. will be plugged in most of the time so it's not essential. How important is weight and thinness to you?** I do carry the laptop in to work several times a week, so prefer something on the lighter side. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything 11.5+ Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Needs to be able to run Photoshop, Clip studio paint well If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Don't really do any gaming Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like to find something with a touch-screen. Super, super important that the color is accurate and that the computer works well with a Wacom Cintique Pro. Last laptop was laggy beyond belief, and the color was totally off so my art looked wonky as hell :( Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Again, color accuracy and handling programs like Photoshop and features like pen pressure are some of my most important features! I'd also like a good amount of memory.
