    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Looking for an old friend from a build thread from last year...

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 12:18 AM PDT

About a year ago I posted a question about upgrading my PC and a couple folks replied... the one fella that replied with the most details I messaged and we had a great "Back & Forth" about build ideas. I was looking to follow up on some additional questions but when I look at my message log his name is gone and replaced with "deleted" even though the messages from him are still there. Any chance that he sees this, please message me...

The only information I have is his name is David and he's from Germany... anyway, hoping you see this David and if you do, please message me!

What gpu to upgrade to from a gtx 970?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 08:19 AM PDT

Hello All- I am looking to upgrade my gpu from a gtx 970. My hope is to upgrade my card so that I can run the latest games at ultra (destiny 2 and Modern Warfare are what I'm playing). Budget I am looking at is 400-600$, is this realistic? I currently have 1080p monitors but in the future would look to move to 1440. Specs below are what I have currently. I had issues finding the ram I have but it is 16 gbs of DDR4 3200. I have been looking at 2060 supers, but my concern is that I don't have enough knowledge to make an informed decision. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Windows 10 reserves 20% of GPU vram. Is there a way to fully use the vram other than installing linux/ubuntu?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:27 AM PDT

There's this software called deepfacelab for deepfaking. It requires mainly gpu vram. So when using my 24gb rtx titan, it can't use more than 19.5 gb vram. Only way to fully use it is for me to install and dual boot Ubuntu (linux) which i don't want to do since using deepfacelab on it is complicated for me.

So is there a way to fully use the 24gb vram on windows? Someone told me in a discord chat than they have a 2080 and an rtx titan connected to their pc, but the program still can't use more than 19.6 gb vram..So any solution to this?

EDIT: how about dual booting windows 8 or windows 7? do they also have this bug of reserving 20% vram or nah..?

Most effective case for airflow & cable management?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:49 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I'm currently looking to build a PC with an i7-8700k CPU and an EVGA 1080ti. I'm stuck on deciding which case to choose because I would like to find a mid tower case that offers the best airflow and cable management possible. I'm open to any input and advice. Thanks.

41c idle temp after reapplying thermal paste

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 11:12 AM PDT

Cpu: Ryzen 2600 with stock cooler

I just re applied my thermal paste because I felt like my temps were too high and I'm getting idle temps of around 41-46 (doing nothing, browsing)

Playing cpu intensive games like no mans sky the temps stay in mid 70s sometimes peaking at 81c

the ambient temp in my room is 26-29c

    Are these temps ok?

MSI B450M Gaming Plus vs ASRock B450M Pro for Ryzen APU. Do they both support 3-pin fan speed control?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 02:18 PM PDT

They're about the same price here in the UK. The motherboard will be paired with the Ryzen 2200G. There are few differences:

    MSI/ASRock

    • USB ports: 5+1/7+1 (1 is type C; so unless I get an adapter from C to B there'll be only 1 USB left on rear on MSI)
    • RAM slots: 2/4 (but only two will ever be used anyway)
    • Audio codec: ALC887/ALC892 + some marketing words like Audio Boost on MSI or ELNA caps on ASRock (but I doubt there is any difference)
    • M.2 slots: 1/2 (but only one slot on ASRock is PCIe)

I'd like to control the 3-pin chassis fans with software so that they will stop spinning in idle or run at very low RPM. I can do this on my ASUS x470 motherboard, I'm not familiar with MSI or ASRock, but maybe it's a common feature nowadays. Looks doesn't matter, no RGB, no OC. I need a reliable motherboard that will last for years. It would also be nice to be able to upgrade to the Zen 2 APU in the future, I've no idea which manufacturer is better with BIOS updates, so I'd welcome some input on this too. Thank you.

PC won't boot after years of working properly, please help!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:48 PM PDT

PC has been working fine the last few years. She's a beauty. Went to turn it on today and nothing. So far cannot get it to give any sort of response. I have tried:

    Different socket, power cable

Changed RAM out for known working RAM and tried every slot

Jumping power supply to see if fan works

    Using different, working power supply

Shorting power switch in all configurations

    Clearing CMOS

I am completely at a loss. My theory is that both the power supply and motherboard are dead.

Is there anything I'm missing? Any help is appreciated

Are there any downsides of building PC’s for everyone to use in the office at work?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 11:11 AM PDT

I work in a family ran commercial and institutional construction company. The management here are all between the ages of 55-65 and nearing the end of their careers, but so are their computers, where they do 75% of their work from.

These computers all have i5's with maybe 4 gb of ram, and are at least 6-8 years old a piece. Aside from the 3 executive managers (who aren't tech savvy at all) , there are also 4 project managers between the ages of 20-30, including myself.

I'm trying to convince my execs that if they let me build everyone a computer, I could do it for a 1/2 the price but produce computers with double or triple the speed as what they can buy, while also including extra monitors.

Are there any downsides to doing this? I want to be prepared to show how we can offset the cons before I try to convince a bunch of old guys that we need quicker computers with more monitors to work more efficiently.

Edit: I should add that our main use for our computers are reading blueprints, doing research, creating documents, sending emails, and using some estimation and blueprint software.

So this is what I came to. Its pushing my budget a bit and I'm unsure about a couple of things. I'll number my questions so it'll be easier to read.

1)CPU - So I'm looking at the 3700x in particular because I'm looking to 'future proof' this PC a bit. I know there's no such thing as 'future proofing' as such but what I really mean is I want something that I won't have to upgrade for the rest of the next console cycle (so something that'll comfortably compete with the PS5 / nextXbox), excluding a necessary GPU upgrade maybe halfway through the next generation of course. As such I went 3700x instead of 3600. Is this really worth it though? Would it be a much better idea to just get a 3600 and a cooler instead (bearing in mind I'd rather not have to change CPU for a good 7 or 8 years)? Would a 3600 contend with the PS5 era games even though its 6 cores instead of the PS5's purported 8?

    2) Motherboard - I'm stuck between either the B450 thomohawk or the ASUS tuf x570. The x570 is much more expensive, but from what I've researched its PCIe 4.0 doesn't really confer much of an advantage, at least not yet. So do you reckon I should stick with B450, or is the x570 more future proof in that regard (as you've noticed I'm willing to pay more in the short term if it means I'll get more mileage out of these components).

    3) Memory - simply, is this memory good? I've read some suggestion by others to get a Ballistix sport lt ram kit over most others. Does it really matter or should I get something other than Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory?

    4) SSD - Sabrent Rocket 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME, Intel 660p Series 1.02 TB M.2-2280 NVME, Corsair MP510 960 GB M.2-2280 NVME. Does it matter which one or are any one of those fine? These are the 3 I've been eyeing.

    5) Case - Could I skimp on the case and get one a little cheaper? This one for eg. Does it matter? I just picked this one because its very commonly recommended. All I really know is NZXT ones apparently have air flow problems. Also if I do get this one I was gonna install all these fans just to be sure its running cool, but is that really necessary?

    6) PSU - Is this PSU good :D? I know I could go for a 650w instead but I'm giving myself a bit of leg room for possible OC and GPU upgrades and such. The price isn't much more expensive over a 650w one anyway.

    7) GPU - SO there's like a million brands of 5700XT and I'm overwhelmed. Some are much more expensive than others and I try to learn the difference but I'm too dumb to get it. Could you recommend any particular make and models of 5700XT to get in particular? Also I went for 5700XT as it seems to be only slightly slower than a 2070 Super.

    8) Monitor - finally we're at the end guys :D. But yeah, monitor wise I'm pretty confused. I believe that if I get a freesync one I'm boxed into getting only AMD cards and if I get a g sync one I'm boxed into getting nvidia, is this right? This also is not the only monitor I've been eyeing but I'm overwhelmed. Basically, is the Samsung LC27JG50QQNZA a good monitor or can I get better for around its price (not looking to go over around $350 on a monitor). This for eg https://pcpartpicker.com/product/DjH8TW/viewsonic-vx2758-2kp-mhd-270-2560x1440-144-hz-monitor-vx2758-2kp-mhd. EDIT: oh and one more thing, would I need to buy a cable separately to the Monitor or will one come with it?

Thanks for all the help in advance and sorry for the word wall :D!

    Opinions on this build?

    PCIE 4.0 in GPU's

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 04:12 PM PDT

Hi there, i want to upgrade my GPU from a 1050 Ti to either a 2060 Super or Radeon 5700 and i was wondering the importance of the pcie 4.0?

I do have a x570 motherboard with a AMD R7 3700x so my pc is completely pcie 4.0 compatible, also just want to note i am fond of ray tracing but its not a necessity.

So what do you think would be a better buy? And im ignoring price to performance because i would like the 5700 for pcie 4 if its worth it or the 2060 S for the ray tracing (and COD MW with it XD )

MSI B450 Gaming Plus and rgb question

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:51 PM PDT

Sorry if im asking in the wrong place. I have the B450 gaming Plus motherboard and i was thinking of buying new rgb fans and a CPU cooler but from what ive seen most rgb fans and coolers have a 3pin ARGB connector, but my motherboard has two JRGB connectors. So will rgb fans work with my motherboard, or do i need an adapter of some sorts or am i just out of luck. Also if it works, will i be able to use the mystic light program to control the rgb. For reference i was thinking of getting this cooler.

I intend to use this build to play mainly the Witcher 3 on maxed out settings. I would also like to play Skyrim and some newer games at high settings. I use Photoshop and also watch a lot of movies off of Plex.

I'd like to play the Witcher 3 at 30-60 fps and at 1080 or 4k settings.

My budget is about $900 and I am purchasing in the U.S.

Oh, and if anyone has a better motherboard that is the same style, I'm open for that too.

Thanks for any help in advance!

    Upgrade from i5 4690K

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:40 PM PDT

Hey guys I think it's time for me to upgrade my CPU for my gaming PC. I'm getting severe discord lag and sub 60 fps while I play modern warfare without maxing out my gpu.

    Current specs - i5-4690k , GTX 1060 3GB, 8 Gb ram.

What CPU upgrades would provide meaningful performance improvements ? I know I will have to buy a new Mobo and ram. So far I've looked at the ryzen 2700x but what are your thoughts?

    Building a brand-name pc myself.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:35 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

So I've been thinking about getting an upgrade from my current computer (an HP envy pheonix) to something more modern, as it's slowing down due to age. I'm not about to drop 1k on a pc, so I looked around on the internet until I found what something that looked about right. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cybertronpc-rhodium-gaming-desktop-amd-fx-series-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-2tb-hard-drive-green/5024903.p?skuId=5024903 Here's what I'm looking at right now. I wanted 16GB of ram to match my current computer, but I wanted an upgrade in terms of video card, computer processor, etc. I heard from a friend who's really into this stuff that it's cheaper to just build your own. However, the idea of starting from scratch scares me. Is there anyway to just take this PC and just order all the parts myself and build it myself? Or is that not an option and I should just buy it? Any feedback or tips would be appreciated. Thanks! Side note: I'm mainly looking at this from a perspective of gaming, and would like to be able to run popular games like overwatch or CS:GO pretty fast.

High performance/ultimate performance for ryzen cpu and GPU?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:34 PM PDT

I have a r5 3600, been told by some people that I shouldn't use high performance and just use balanced. Why is that? What about using the ultimate performance power plan?

    New Ryzen build constantly bluescreens

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 11:28 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

    What is your parts list?

    • MSI B450M MORTAR MAX
    • AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    • G.Skill DDR4 Ripjaws-V 2x8GB 3200Mhz - [F4-3200C16D-16GVKB]
    • Intel 660p 1TB M.2 SSD
    • Seasonic M12II Evo 620W
    • Fractal Design Core 1100
    • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super GAMING OC 3X 8G

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Since the first Windows installation, the computer has suffered from constant BSODs. Most of the time, the error code is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. The bluescreens all seem to be caused by driver ntoskrnl.exe. This seems to occur at random moments, even when simply browsing the internet.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • 2 fresh Windows installs (one reset via Windows, and one wipe and completely new installation)
    • Motherboard driver installs / updates
    • Windows updates
    • BIOS update
    • Userbenchmark, CPUX, FurMark and Memtest all seem to run without issue

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    BSOD information: https://pastebin.com/ubA4vpF2

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
