Gaming+School for 700$: HP Omen 15t vs. Lenovo Ideapad L340

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 08:41 PM PDT

    HP Omen 15t

    -9th Gen i5-9300H

    -GTX 1650

-8 GB memory; 256GB Nvme SSD

-Display has 144-Hz refresh rate and 111% of the sRGB color gamut but uses PDM (screen flickering)

    -High heat issues

    -Poor support

    Vs.

    Lenovo Ideapad L340

    -9th Gen i5-9300H

    -GTX 1650

    -8GB; 512GB Nvme SSD

-Display has 60-Hz refresh rate and 50% of rGBD no PWM (screen flicker)

    -Good cooling

    -Good support

The main choice seems like a much nicer display with HP vs double the storage with Lenovo.

The HP Omen heating issues worry me as to effect on durability, but a little throttling should solve this right?

HP is having their anniversary sale, so both are $700 now.

Which would you recommend and why?

    Or... should I save $100 and go with either the $600 Dell G3 -8th Gen i5-8300H -8GB RAM;1TB HHD -GTX 1050Ti 4GB

    Or

    $600 Acer Nitro 5 -AMD Ryzen 5 -8GB RAM;256GB SSD -AMD Radeon RX 560X 4GB

Both of which have poorer displays with only 41% rGBD...

This is going to be my only computer for hopefully the next 5 years+ so it's a big decision for me.

Thank you for all your assistance.

    laptop for the work

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:39 AM PDT

    Hi!

I need a laptop for the programming so my main requirements are

    • Windows 10 Pro (I need virtualization support)
    • 16 GB RAM
    • SSD and more or less performant CPU
    • I play RGM Maker or RenPy games but not regular games
    • 15'
    • no more than 700 Euro
    • Full HD

    At work I had Hp EliteBook 840 G5 (14, 1920x1080, i5 8350U, 16GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro) but I consider it too expensive.

I was looking at https://www.coolblue.nl/en/product/832351/hp-pavilion-15-cw1948nd.html but it would require to upgrade Windows Home to Pro. Also I have access to amazon de

Eventually I am planning to build a PC but for now I want a laptop.

Is t480s worth it for software development

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:49 AM PDT

Hello, i been saving some cash lately to buy a new laptop this coming black friday, I was planning to buy a laptop for software development. I am currently doing laravel with vagrant, c# .net and android studio. Is t480s a good deal for my need? Anyone who use this for heavy duty? This laptop will never see gaming, only software development. You can also suggest any laptop you find better. I was looking for a laptop that would last with me for a while.

Laptop for work, looking for good laptop for desk work and field work ~$1500

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 09:43 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Around $1500 with some flexibility, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Not sure, looking for some potential input here. Good battery life will be important...might be a helicopter ride away from a good charger.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Would be beneficial to have something light weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Nope

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Ideally, something that would work well inside and outside. A bright screen with good battery life and a light weight device should help with this. I'd also prefer having something that could charge via USB-C and potentially be thunderbolt compatible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My previous laptop was a dell rugged (government job), which was much bulkier and durable than anything I need. Many of my colleagues use a Surface and have been happy with the device...but I've seen some major issues online anecdotally. I'd likely be using this at a mix of locations from a work desk, various meetings, and remote field locations.

    Thanks!

    Gaming Laptop For $750-$850?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 11:45 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking to purchase a gaming laptop around Black Friday / Cyber Monday. I'm looking to spend between $750-$850 on it. It doesn't need to output Ultra graphics in 4k or anything. I just need something to get me by for the next 2-3 years until I build my own custom desktop PC. I don't play a lot of graphic intensive games on PC...mainly games like League of Legends, AOEII DE (when it comes out), Warcraft 3 Reforged (when it comes out), Frostpunk, and maybe Destiny 2.

Where would you suggest is the best place to buy a gaming laptop? What brands are the best? And what should I look for in terms of system specs for that price point?

    Thanks!

Looking for daily business use 2 in 1. $1500 max budget. USA.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 10:41 PM PDT

There are just too many options to choose from. I've used a tank of an Asus ROG g37 for about 8? years now, maybe more. It traveled with me through a few countries and a few botched upgrades, and is still ticking, but it is time to move on.

I work from my computer so log about 30 hours per week minimum. Mostly lap use, some desk, rarely on battery. I do not game, but would like to be able to run WoW if that urge ever arises again.

I mainly use the computer to create spread sheets, upload photos and list items on ebay (my job) and listen to music.

I strongly prefer windows 7, but that doesn't seem possible (unless it is). I prefer a 15+" i really like 17".

I like a reliable build quality. Seeming how i have been lugging a tank around for 8 years. I want something that is going to last another 8.

I have a surface pro 2, that i have used since it came out as well. I like it, it fits most my needs but does not sit on a lap well, screen is too small, but that is about the extent of my negatives about it. It even ran WoW when i tested it for fun.

    Thanks.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? i want it to be under 4lbs

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? touch screen, nice touchpad, HDMI port, headphone jack, USB-A port,

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. In the past, I had a rlly old fujitsu 2 in 1, which i didn't like. I was looking at the Lenovo Yoga C series and the Surface Book... Also, I'm a student so I should be eligible for any student discounts.

Cheap laptop for Netflix/podcasts in bed, typing on the road

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 09:04 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Budget preferably under $500. Netherlands

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life, generally I'd hope to use it for five years.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important as long as it's not absurd.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows is fine. I'm unfamiliar with Chrome OS but if it can run basic programs and some way to listen to podcasts it's okay.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nice keyboard would be good.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I still use my ~2012 Macbook as my bed laptop but it's just getting too slow and since Chrome has decided that it's too old to update anymore more and more sites have stopped working.

    Similar laptop to ASUS X570ZD-DM121T?

I intended to buy this one but it turned out that all internet stores in my country have it sold out. I'm looking for a similar model in terms of performance, perhaps just a newer version of it (but I can't find which Asus model exactly that should be).

Thin, 2-in-1 ultrabook that's good for gaming (although 2-in-1 isn't a massive priority)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:57 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$2000, US. It can go up to $2100.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The former two (but again, it's fine if it's not a 2-in-1. Just as long as it's flexible.)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very. I'll be carrying it to, around, and from school every day

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13' to 15'

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, and things like DCUO, The Sims, Civilization V, Skyrim, and Crusader Kings 2.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games listed above. Truth be told, I'm not 100% sure what FPS is, so I'll just say high, although very high is even better.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen, fingerprint-reader would be nice but as long as it has Windows Hello, I'm good, the type of USB port that can connect to flash drives and phone chargers, and an HDMI port (not a massive requirement).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've only used Dell throughout my whole life, so having a different brand would be nice. Isn't absolutely necessary if there is a Dell so perfect that there's really no other option but yeah y'know. As per Windows Hello, it'd be very nice to have, but it's cool not to have if it has a fingerprint reader.

    Productivity Laptop

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:50 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 0-1400 USD, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life At least 6 hours.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight isn't really important to me, but it can't be REALLY THICC
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is fine
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15in is preferred. I don't think there's anything bigger in the price range.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes to all above. Premiere Pro, Photoshop, CS: GO, Black Squad
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If it can run CS:GO at more than 60fps (low settings) and still use Premiere? We're good.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? For the love of god, no number pads. Speakers are pretty much nonfactor, since I have headphones. A good bright screen is necessary. IPS or nothing.
      • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would get the Dell G5 but the screen is oof.

    Question regarding a laptop...

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:47 PM PDT

Hi, I'm looking for a good laptop (not so expensive). I'm an undergraduate student, I'll only use it for college work (power point, word, etc), social media, and to download videos. I currently own a Mac Mini mid 2011 (2.4 gHz, dual core, 4GB ram DDR3 and i5), I want it with i5 and at least 8GB ram, but I'm confused regarding how many processors do I need and also how many gHz should I look into. Thank you very much!

    Gaming laptop under 800

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 10:18 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am looking for a gaming laptop below 800 dollars, preferably lower, as 800 is my absolute max. I mostly play older games, but I am hoping to run Breath of the Wild and the Master Chief collection. I'm not picky about performance, 1080p and 30+ fps are fine for me, although more is always appreciated. What would be some laptops that could do that in my price range? Thanks

Need a laptop for business / Data Science

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000. United States
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best design for business with the highest specs.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important as this will be used for office meetings and school.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 15 inches sounds good
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be running programs such as SQL Server, PowerBI, Machine Learning Tools, and excel using extremely large data sets to do data analytics with machine learning tools
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not planning to do any gaming but laptops need to be powerful to handle the large data sets without freezing.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Must have a built in SSD. Preferably 1tb at least.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I just scored a job working for a data/business analytics firm. I'm eager to get started going to work but quickly realized that my 17 inch gaming laptop is way too bulky and very heavy to take to work each day. Looking for a laptop with great processing power to handle all the large data sets and machine learning computations.

Laptop for Classic WoW and some smaller games like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 09:44 PM PDT

Mainly concerned about classic. 1050 systems are not in my budget and I have a desktop.

The main two models I am looking at (used) are the HP envy x360 with the 3500u and a Xiaomi airbook 13 with an I5 8250u/2gb mx150max q. I would prefer the convenience of the Envys 2-1 system if the the 3500u should be alright with Wow(benchmarks are non existent). Any suggestions would help tho. My budget is $600ish Canadian and I'm open to other used options. Portability is a major factor. Preferably thin and light and nothing over 15' please.

And please dont suggest an I5/620hd lappy. I've returned one already lol.

Laptop for college that can do subtle gaming

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 08:31 PM PDT

Priority is to get a laptop that is durable and has good battery life. I also game when I can but it's mostly light gaming like league and occasional indie games but It would be a bonus if I could play some higher demanding games on it, not necessary though. The price range is flexible but would prefer it below 2000 aud which is about 1400 usd. Also wanna add that I can wait a few months before purchasing a laptop as my semester just ended for the year. Any future laptops that I should look out for that isn't release yet are also welcome in the comments.

    <$3000 -Programming/Gaming

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:46 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Preferably around $3000, can go higher if perfect.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best Specs for money, 2 in 1 would be cool but not mandatory. Obviously good battery life is a plus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Needs to look professional and nothing crazy heavy - do not want any spaceship type stuff.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15' preferably but am flexible.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programming - Visual studio/Android Studio/Unreal Engine Games - Several AAA games + Stadia (I want a nice display to take advantage of what Stadia is going to be offering).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

See above for games, would like to run at high settings/high fps + good display

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard would be nice as I will be typing a lot. Better build quality is better. Touch-screen would be nice (especially for 2 in 1). Doesn't need a fingerprint reader but would be cool. Maybe something with an IR camera for hello windows would be sweet.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I want something with a good display/performance that will handle multiple heavy programs (and maybe even some games) to be ran at once. Maybe I'm looking for too much, price is a little flexible if need it hits all the right points.

I would prefer a 13" or 14"-size: newest notebooks have smaller bezels, so a 15" can now fit into a smaller chassis. This means I would prefer a computer that is 13" x 9", but will go up to roughly 14" x 10" for the perfect machine.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?**
No, but I would like a discrete chip.

    * **Any specific requirements?**
    In order:

    1. Reliable build quality

    2. Good touchpad

    3. Good keyboard

I would prefer *not* to have:

    - optical drive

    - fingerprint scanner

    - touchscreen

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**
Hey there! I am a 1099 contractor who works at home, at the office and in coffee shops. Price doesn't matter as much to me since I can deduct it as a business expense, and I need something that can handle demanding services like Docker.

I have been watching RossmanGroupTV™ long enough to avoid getting another MBP. I recently purchased a TOTL ASUS and just putting 18.04 on it has been a nightmare. I am willing to cut my losses and just purchase something that will work with Debian/Ubuntu as easily as possible.

I have already considered an X1 Extreme or Carbon, with the hope that an easy 18.04 install goes over well. Is there anything else I should consider? I am also looking for:

    - at least 16 GB
    - most powerful CPU, whatever we are up to now in 2011 + 8
    - discrete Nvidia card if possible
    - prefer to not have any cheap ASUS plastic going on
    - would be nice to have a hard case: I have had many close calls in coffee shops or at the office before because of others

Can't stress the Debian compatibility enough. But that's it. Cheers!

Aspiring to be Cyber Security Expert, will use Kali linux via virtual box in Windows 10 OS. I want to buy a laptop-Tablet like Surface Pro x. Do you recommend it for Cyber Security newbies?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200$. UAE

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Anything

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm thinking of Surface Pro X. Something like Tablet-Laptop

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13 inches +

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Email, Windows offices, Kali Linux via Virtual Box

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Probably will install emulator for phone games.

    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices

    Not important

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Do you recommend Surface Pro X for Travling Cyber Security?

PAST-EDIT I believe one day, I'll see myself going to cyber hacking events all over the world. participating in CTF etc.. (my dream)

When that time comes. I think portability is vital. (+ my laptop recently got broken)

Since probably most of the expert here has experience moving to events to another. I was thinking if Surface Pro X is a good... choice?

The specs of the product is different to any laptops like the chips sets and GPU.although the OS is still windows 10 which could be used to install virtual box for kali linux,

** Do you think its appropriate to have this when it comes to necessary comfort, performance and specially for Cyber Security? **

    Thank you for reading!
