Do all NVIDIA laptops come with OPTIMUS? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:47 PM PDT I'm looking for sort of a hybrid laptop Good battery life for browsing / etc and only gaming while plugged in. I know that the NVIDIA optimus technology will allow me to turn off the discrete gpu to save battery life but my question is can they all use it? or is it an added feature? edit: https://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/optimus/supported-gpus [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:16 AM PDT Hey guys, i'm going to purchase a laptop today, the main purpose of this laptop will be some programming and taking it to classes, i can't extend my budget anymore. i'm getting Acer aspire 3 a315-42 with Athlon 300U for 24,000 INR (338.78 USD) and Lenovo s145 with Ryzen 3 3200U for 26,000 INR (367.21 USD). Is ryzen 3 3200U worth it for 2,000 INR (28.23 USD) more? I can't find any videos of Athlon 300U on youtube. And how is the battery of both laptops? On the side note, s145 have 1080p display whereas aspire 3 have 1366*768. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:10 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1500 maximun. I live is the USA. The store is Best Buy from San Luis Obispo. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Balanced. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not important. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 17.3 inch size. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Autocad, Civil 3D, Etabs. No more than that. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Basically Dota 2 at highest, Starcraft 2 (ultra at least), GTA V at high settings. Being able to play any game at 60 fps at least would be nice for me. * **Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Just good and durable keyboard. Finger-print would be nice though. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I will use this laptop for at least 4-5 year. I'm looking for something that will be consistent and won't decline its performance dramatically just after some time of use (very slow drop through the years). Also a laptop doesn't get very hot. These two caught my atention which one would be better for me. Are there better options? [link] [comments] |
Planning to buy a MacBook Pro for both gaming and academic staff... Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:44 AM PDT Hi, people say that i7 2.6 gHz with turbo 4.4 gHz, 16 gb ram and AMD Radeon Pro 555x cannot handle Dota 2 in full graphics or Lol. Is it true? I do not want to buy a desktop or I do not prefer MSI because I need a MacBook, which is easy to carry, to use mostly in academic works and play games such as Dota 2, Europa Universalis, and Hitman 2. A Linux Laptop for programming and casual 3D Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:40 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around $1800-$2000USD * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** The battery is definitely important. I would like to be able to program on international flights so something in the 8-10 range of light work would be nice. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not looking for a gaming laptop. Light and thin will make TSA security checks easier. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Dual-boot between Linux and Windows. 90% of my time will be in Linux. Only using Windows for gaming or windows only apps. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I'm leaning between 14-15in. I've looked at the Dell XPS 13 and I feel like that is too small for my needs, and anything in the 17+ range is too big for me. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Some blender and Maya work but nothing crazy. I would like to play some games on it but I'll probably get an eGPU enclosure for that. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Again, I'll probably get an eGPU, but games I could see myself playing over the next 2-3 years (Don't judge me): Sub-Nautica SubZero CyberPunk 2077 Microsoft Flight Sim X-Plane Kerbal Space Program 2 Nothing too crazy on here, and as for framerates, I'm not a serious gamer, obviously, so anything in the 50-60FPS range is more than good enough for me. * **Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I'm a software developer so a crappy keyboard really ruins it (I'm looking at you MacBook Pro). Also since I plan on spending most of my time in Linux, something with good Linux support that doesn't require days of hacking to get stable would be nice. Lastly, since I'm planning on going eGPU for my gaming and any other GPU based shenanigans, thunderbolt 3 is a hard requirement: preferably with 4 PCI Express lanes. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Ok, so here's the short version of my story. I'm going to be moving overseas for a few years and I'm selling the work-horse desktop that I currently use for most of my coding and gaming needs, and I'm also going to get rid of my 3-year-old XPS 15 since it's not keeping up with me anymore. I'm looking for something I can work on day-to-day and when traveling around, but also allows me to play games on the weekends connected to an eGPU and larger monitor. I'm currently between the MSI Prestige 15 and the XPS 15 7590. On paper, the MSI looks perfect but I'm a little worried about Linux support and overall quality of the laptop (I've never owned anything by MSI). Before I pull the trigger on one of these machines, I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions or pros/cons for either of my current choices. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Laptop suggestions for engineering softwares and WoW BfA Posted: 30 Oct 2019 10:22 PM PDT Hey guys! I have a pretty amazing desktop that runs what I need to run. This issue is that I'm never home which is stopping from contributing to my senior project since my mac can't really run any engineering program I need to use. I don't have a lot of money so I was hoping to find something from the $500-600 range but I can move up the range up to $800. I mainly will be using it for those programs so 8GB is a min for ram but I would also like to able to play a few games (like WoW BfA since that's currently the only game I play) when I go home on break or when I'm not at my place. I'm not really knowledgeable on AMD stuff since that seems to be a common theme on the more affordable laptop. Can you guys give me some suggestions? I really need something to jump on quick. Here is something I've been eyeing because of the price tag: https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-pavilion-laptop-15z-5mu54av-1?jumpid=ma_weekly-deals_product-tile_laptops_1_5mu54av-1_hp-pavilion-laptop-- [link] [comments] |
Refurbished business like laptop for $300 CAD Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:40 PM PDT
~ $300 CAD
Best specs for the money
Not important, its for home use
Windows
N/A
I'd like play smaller games on it
Im not sure where this price range can get me in term of gaming but games like company of heroes 2, dark souls games maybe, civ 5-6
Keyboard and touchpad quality aren't important as i will use a mouse and separate keyboard most of the time. Hdmi port. Displayport would be fine too 5GHz recognition would be nice but if not its fine too Black color would be nice if its at equal performances as other color
The refurbished i need is mostly for streaming, and to play smaller games. Portabilty isnt important so it can be really heavy and tick. Design isnt important either. If it can be bought off of amazon.ca it would be ideal but other stores is fine too. Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
standard laptop for light gaming up to £750 UK Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:08 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: ideally up to £750 and UK. however if a really good for the price laptop is only about hundred more I'd be willing to go with that, so max £900 but only for something really special, not sure if there is anything for that price anyway. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs for money, don't particularly care about battery life and 2 in 1 isn't important How important is weight and thinness to you? not important at all, i don't care what it weighs or how thin it is. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. preferably at least 15 inches, my current laptop is that and it's okay, but if i could afford to go bigger I would. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. just gaming, my current laptop is fine for the general games but it has trouble when i introduce mods and with some of the bigger games. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? sims, stardew valley, skyrim, civ 6, some other rpgs and smaller games too. not sure what settings i use, i generally just run as recommended. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? My main concern/criteria is memory and storage, i'm constantly running out of room on my current one and i want the most for my money. I also want it to not be slow just generally running, my previous laptop was a lenovo that took 15 minutes from starting to log in and it drove me mad, along with needing a solid 10 minutes every time i tried to open a program. a backlit keyboard would be nice too. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. i'll be honest i don't know much about what goes into a laptop and what the differences are between anything. i currently have a HP Omen, not sure of the exact type but i believe it's this one, it's got an i5 processor and 8gb RAM 128GB SSD, it's worked well over the years and i like the aesthetics of it, it lights up red which is cute. it's falling apart a lot which is why i'm looking for a new one. Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:34 AM PDT I live in Europe, Budget is 300Euro's. Don't want 2 in 1, good battery life over high spec. Weight and thickness are very important. I carry this around with me all day. OS: Windows 10 Screen size between 13 and 14 inches. This will be used for daily office type work, no games/cad or anything too taxing. I don't need a numpad or touchsrcreen. Weight and battery life are important. Ideal spec would be i5/i7 8-12gb or RAM. I don't care about the HD, I plan on installing a 1tb SSD and putting a fresh Windows 10 install on there. I currently have a UX305F (4GB/i3). I love the size and weight. I'd happily keep going with it if I could upgrade the RAM. It has 4gb soldered. [link] [comments] |

About to graduate, need a laptop for software development and some gaming Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:16 AM PDT Since I only have a year of school left it's time to upgrade from the same laptop I've had since middle school. What I'm looking for: -13-15" -16 GB RAM -256 GB capacity minimum -Processor where I can play once in a while with decent performance, but I'm not a hardcore gamer either -Preferably Windows OS since my mac still runs fine, but I'd also like if I can use it with Linux [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop that is good for the price of 1800$ max. Posted: 30 Oct 2019 10:13 PM PDT First time buying a laptop. I have been looking for a while but my lack of EXP has been a problem. Found multiple laptops that looked like they were good but then they had a GTX 1050 in it or another problem. Right now I'm staying for Predator 300, from what I've read it's good for it's price. And I want something that is relatively movable so not the THICCCEST boy [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 09:13 PM PDT Hello reddit. Can anyone tell me if this has a good processor speed + a processor? I am thinking about this on e that I linked below. I plan to play R6 + code on it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:12 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1000-$1500 CAD (canadian) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money, i have a drawing tablet so 2 in 1 isnt nessesary. good battery life would be nice tho for college. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** im fine with weight as long as it isnt too heavy. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** i like 15.6 but any size that isnt 17' is okay. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** i will be doing animation, art, photo and video editing as well as some light gaming. i just want to be able to play games without crashing. like fortnite or maybe overwatch at decent framerates. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** average settings with minimum 60 FPS so its not a choppy mess. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** i would like a laptop that would be reliable enough to last me through college and i very much need a graphics card that can run games decently. i also must have a great screen. i cant compromise on the screen as i need the colour accuracy. 4k isnt necessary. im fine with 1080p * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** i just want a laptop i can use without feeling like im missing something. im an artist so i need a great screen but i also want to play games. the predator helios 300 looks good because of the screen and 1660 Ti but im just wondering what other options are there that might have similar specs for maybe cheaper or better like better battery life? depends on what there is. thanks for your help! edit: i know i said id be doing all those super demanding tasks that would require super intense hardware like photo and video editing as well as animation. but i can already do those things at a fairly low level with my current laptop which has a core i5-7200u, integrated graphics and a 1 TB hard drive with 12 GB ram. i just want to be able to do those things at a higher level and not struggle when doing it. enough to be considered a professional and make a living selling my work. Looking for a reliable computer for the remainder of graduate school -- Please Help! Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:25 PM PDT A year into grad school and my 2-year-old Dell Inspiron 5577 started crashing more frequently than I'd like. I really don't want to spend hours comparing specs and prices, fortunately, I just discovered this wonderful community and anything would be a big help, thanks! * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1200 tops, but preferably much less ($800-1000 range), USA * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I've never owned a laptop with over 5 hours of battery life, so yes, I long for a day where I don't have to plug in my laptop. Specs, not so much, I won't be gaming at all on this, but maybe running AutoCAD and Matlab from time to time. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I want something compact, but I will be satisfied as long as it is reasonable to carry around day to day. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I'm used to Windows, definitely not Mac, the other two I have never used * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A, but like I said, compact * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** AutoCAD and maybe photo editing with lightroom and photoshop. Won't be running too much of any though * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No games, strictly work computer * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I'd love to have a touch-screen, even one of those you can convert to a tablet (excuse my expert description). I would love to take notes with it as well as to use it for lecturing. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** In summary, I want something with reasonable quality and can last me through a few years without significant problems. Ideally, a compact device with a touch screen and tablet conversion that will handle a reasonable amount of programming stress. Again, thanks in advance for your inputs! [link] [comments] |

A good balance between battery life and specifications is important. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** It is fairly important, my current laptop is huge and heavy. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Smallish, not tiny, but definitely not huge. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Solid works, MATLAB, Mathematica, etc. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 09:37 PM PDT Hey team, I wanted to start streaming some of my PS4 content onto twitch as well as be able to capture this content for editing. I'm looking for a 500-700 dollar rig, and I'm in the US. I know I need at least 8GB of RAM and more than likely 2.5+gHz for my CPU. I am indifferent on size and make, but do prefer windows os. Trying to keep it budget until I can spare more money onto better equipment(probably tax season), but I really wanted to kick off my content ASAP. Let me know if it's even possible to nab a rig with the right specs or if I should just wait. -BG [link] [comments] |

Do all ultrabooks suck or have I looked in the wrong places? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:47 PM PDT I got a XPS13 2 in 1 yesterday and was very happy with it until I found out that it has coilwhine. It's barely perceptible but perceptible enough to be annoying. One of those things you can never unhear after hearing. I am probably going to get it replaced. But I decided to take one more look at alternatives, includign step ups to 15 inch ultrabooks. It seems that no matter which way you go, there is something wrong with the laptop you have picked and you should instead be purchasing a 10 pound gaming laptop with two inch bezels and 1 hour of battery. This post seems like a shitpost but I am being genuine here. The XPS series is known for coilwhine and thermal throttle. The Macbooks cost a premium and have the shittiest keyboards. Lenovo X1 Carbons have consistency issues, as do Razer Blades and Stealths (And according to most people I talk to they are overpriced). Then we have the Xiaomi and Huawei laptops with no support, and MSI laptops which may as well have no support considering how poor it tends to be. Is there really no truly good ultrabook out there?
