Pixel 4 supports display out through USB C but Google intentionally disabled it

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:54 PM PDT

There has been a lot of talk about the hidden desktop mode for Android. I was wondering if Google Pixel 4 supported display out but many people have stated that it doesn't. Hardware wise, it does but for some reason unlike everyone else who supports it through hardware, Google intentionally disabled it. Wasn't sure if anyone was aware of this so I just wanted to bring attention to this with the hope of getting the attention of someone at Google to enable it. The funny thing is almost all flagship phones INCLUDING iPhone support it while pixel does not. Here is the source of information that shows the disabled function:

Here is an article XDA just did about this: https://www.xda-developers.com/make-android-10-desktop-mode-useful/

Google said they use machine learning to adjust it to your preferences but I still find myself having to adjust it a few times a day.

Xiaomi Mi A3 - Definition of disappointing phone

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:59 PM PDT

This is going to be a hard review because I really wanted to like it, but that's just impossible when looking at alternatives.

    The good:

    - Looks beautiful.

    - Snapdragon 665 is plenty fast for everything.

    - Amoled screen (you can skip this mark because everything else about the display is terrible).

    - Fast updates.

    - Speaker is loud and doesn't distort much on high volume.

    Sadly that's where it ends,

    The bad:

    - In-display fingerprint is just horrific to use, it gets my fingerprint around 5 put of 10 times, and when it does it takes like a second or second and a half to unlock.

    - Face unlock is slower then MIUI's even tho they have same face unlock software which means the animation or something from google is slowing the face unlock down.

    - Images taken by Mi A3 are worse then you'd expect from its sensors megapixels.

    - The display is horrible:

-It feels like the cheapest amoled display I ever used, usually the 720p display's aren't that pixelated but on Mi A3 the pixelization is very noticeable because of PenTile matrix that they used(especially if you have minus diopter).

-It has a lot of imperfections where the display meets the bezel. (https://imgur.com/psIOoxE)

-The worst part is that when you put a screen protector on it, the pixelization becomes much more noticeable, because the screen protector reflects each pixels light (you even get a rainbow effect on your screen) and in-display fingerprint scanner becomes barley usable.

    Software issues:

    - YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE NAVIGATION METHOD!!! - you are stuck with gesture pill navigation introduced in Android 9.

    - Notification light isn't enabled for notifications by default (lmao).

Conclusion: Skip this phone, if you want android one phone get the old Mi A2 or Mi A2 lite, becuase Mi A3 wont satisfy you.

What's your smartphone history and which is the worst/best phone you've owned?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:50 AM PDT

I saw someone mention this in another thread and thought it would be fun. Here's mine:

    Sony Ericsson P900 > OG iPhone > iPhone 3G > iPhone 4 > iPhone 5 > iPhone 6 > OnePlus 5 > OnePlus 5T > Pixel 3a

Worst phone: iPhone 5 - battery life was hoooorible

Best phone: Toss up between the iPhone 4 and the OnePlus 5.

EDIT: forgot I owned the P900 since it was so long ago, and DAMN, you guys go through a lot of phones!!!

I force-enabled RCS through the r/UniversalProfile post a couple of days ago, but I seem to have lost functionality as of a couple of minutes ago. Tried to reset the Activity Launcher settings, but they were still applied.

OnePlus 7T thoughts from Samsung Convert

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:33 AM PDT

I have been a pretty loyal Samsung user for my last few phones. I had a Galaxy S7 Edge, then a Note 8, then an S10. Recently my daughter dropped my S10 and it cracked when it hit the ground face-first due to the lack of protection a case offers with the curved screens.

While curved/edge screen phones look cool, after using them for years my personal opinion is as far as usability they are a complete gimmick and also have a bad reflection on the curved edges which is annoying. So I wanted to switch to a flat screen flagship and was debating between the Pixel 4 and OP 7T. I went with the 7T mostly due to price. Here are my thoughts.

    Positive:

    • The fingerprint reader blows samsungs away. Its so nice to not have to tap the thing several times to unlock the phone
    • Its great having a tempered glass screen protector again with a flat screen phone
    • Oxygen OS is fast and has some actual useful features and the phone has none of the bloat wear on samsung phones, especially Bixby and the annoying as hell Bixby button
    • There is a physical switch on the side of phone to put the ring tone into vibrate or silent which is very nice. On the samsung phone i had to unlock it and manually silence the ringer.
    • Comes with a very nice TPU case with protective raised edges, i did not feel any need to buy an after market case
    • The battery life is very good, but it is INSANE if you set the refresh rate to 60hz. I'll go to bed with 30%+ after hours of screen on time and watching youtube.
    • the Charging time is insane as well. Seriously I can't get over how fast this charges compared to even samsungs quick charge
    • Build quality is IMO comparable to samsung
    • The price of the phone is unbelievable for the value you are getting

    Negative:

    • No always on display - this is baffling but i assume could be fixed in the future with a software update
    • No headphone jack but I guess thats where all phones are headed

I can't compare this to the Pixel 4 because I have not used that phone and obviously I can't speak to the longevity of this phone as I have only had it for a couple of weeks.

But even after a couple of weeks i still just pick up this phone and admire it which is not a feeling I have had with a phone for a very long time. I think it would even be fair to say I had buyers remorse with the S10 as I paid a lot of money for its "flagship" features which for me were useless.

If you are debating whether the 7T would be up to par for you, I would say from my own experience, you will have zero regrets and I would not hesitate to buy a One Plus phone. I believe that I will be loyal to this brand for a while now.

Android Cluster Super Computer with Distributed File Storage

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:45 PM PDT

Hey internet friends! I'm going to be starting a new OS based on LineageOS and ProxMox. It's just in the planning stages right now and very much vaporware, but I'd love to attract some hackers who are passionate about Open Source to help me kick the tires, even during the planning phase.

I've registered SuperMox.me, but for some reason the DNS isn't pushing. I've also put up a quick website on weebly.

What new or upcoming phones would really change things / make you feel that joy of a new gadget?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:33 AM PDT

The lack of "new gadget excitement" came as something of a surprise to me. My SO got an S10 for under 400 (promotion of a local provider). Not hating on Samsungs at all, though I do think plastic and glass should be avoided in construction, - screen looks beautiful and all, but it felt like more or less the same thing as what I'm used to, after playing with it. I guess the camera delivered somewhat better shots (though I didn't have time to look at how detailed the night shots are etc). Just didn't feel much excitement.

I know people speak of a commoditisation of phones, especially with the mid-range pulling up close to 'flagships' in terms of specs, and the flagships being iterative improvements - and rightly so. It is, after all, a tool, has already become ubiquitous, and will likely become even more so (whether it will change shape or not, doesn't matter). It seems like it would logically kill 'excitement' per se. After all, I'm guessing only few people would be really excited about a new screwdriver set...

If someone were to ask me, I would be hard-pressed to say what would make me really excited, but it would probably be some breakthrough in the way I interact with the phone, and a substantial jump in the ease of requesting and getting information from it.

I'd really like to try a Galaxy Note for the pen input - because that does significantly change the way you interact with your phone; but apart from that, I don't really "feel it". Who really speaks to their Assisant on the phone? Unless it's on the level of the AI from "Her", I don't see that as being breakthrough or indeed useful at all. Maybe, just maybe, something like the Surface Duo would provide an entirely new experience, - finally a pocketable digital notebook with the power of an entire computer, pretty much? If it actually does that?

So, what would really make you excited about a new phone, or perhaps what phones do you think would
