    Simple Questions - October 24, 2018

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Best 1440p 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 09:31 AM PDT

    Here's what I need:

    • VESA mount
    • Preferably 27"
    • G-sync is a plus

This is what I'm currently considering since it's cheaper than many other options I've seen and still meets all of the requirements. Is this monitor good? Are there better ones for around the same price? Should I pay more for a different one that will be better in the long run?

edit: Thank you all for your input. I'm going to purchase the Predator IPS tonight as it seems like the most value for its price.

    Totally silent build

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 04:26 AM PDT

I've built a few pcs in the past with parts that are meant to be "silent" but in reality this has never been the case.

I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of how to build a completely silent PC.

    Why all the ASRock hate?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 07:51 AM PDT

    Afternoon people,

I have read a few things online and heard a few things from people I know, all of whom are saying "STAY AWAY FROM ASROCK!". I'm looking to put together a rig in the near future and I'm rather new to it all.

I just wanted to know if these arguments of ASRock being unreliable or generally bad quality have any foundations? I'm looking in particular at the ASRock - Z390 Taichi and Taichi Ultimate, I aim to use the new i7 9700K in this build if that makes any difference?

Anyone who has used the Taichi boards or even ASRock in general, help on this would be appreciated massively!

I got ripped off, don't make the same mistake

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 02:16 AM PDT

First things first, I have been lurking r/buildapc for some months now, thanks to you I put together my first build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fMV3jy.

Same as many others, although I finished my build and I am quite happy with it, I keep checking subs like this and r/bapcsaleseurope daily and watching youtube building channels (it is a way of life now, isn't it?).

Ok so, to the matter in question. I like to play demanding games like Quake Champions at the highest FPS possible so I was wondering if I should upgrade my GTX 1080 to get stable 250+ FPS. After days of looking for offers I found a guy selling a GTX 2080 for 300 euros. I thought this looks like a scam but cared to ask him: "Hey thats cheap, what is the trick?". He told me that even with that low price nobody asked for it and that he was willing to sell it cheap because he had money and bought a 2080ti for a very good price. He seemed like a genuine guy and he even sent me a photo of his credentials (covering his signature for security reasons) over the sealed box of the card. He also showed me the invoice of the purchase.

I proposed him to send me the card and I would pay after checking if it worked correctly. He then proceed to ask me for half of the money in advance and I said no, I suggested to use a three part payment system and he said we could use paysafe, send him 50€ and after I receive the card and check it I could pay him the other 250. I hesitated but I thought, ok, it is worth a try, if I loose 50€ it is not the end of the world so I payed him.

He said he would send the card first thing in the morning and I went to sleep. Next morning he writes and tells me that his wife is mad at him because he is exposing himself too much with this deal. That we could either do the first deal: 150€ up front or he could return the 50€ without any issue. I trusted him, fell again for it and payed the extra 100€. Yea, I know... He said he would send the tracking number and I am still waiting for it.

So, after realising I had been fooled, I experienced the expected feelings: anger and frustration. I don't consider myself an extremely bright person but I think I manage ok and I understand how things work online (been using it for 25 years) and never had any similar issue. I still don't understand how I fell for it but... it happened. I thought I had found THE deal but I was just another fool.

I am thinking about going to the police and filling a complaint but it might be a waste of time for such money amount. I was greedy and I learnt the lesson. I thought the best thing I could do is just share the story so others might not fall for similar situations.

Looking back in retrospect there were so many red flags:

    • Price ridiculously low
    • Money upfront
    • He offered to pay for the shipping
    • His purchase was in the 14 day legal return period, I saw that in his purchase invoice.
    • He refused to use higher security payment systems

This was SCAM 101. Don't let it happen to you.

    Thanks for reading.

TLDR; If it is too good to be true, it probably is. Lost 150€ trying to buy a 2080 for 300€.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Gaming lags. I mainly play league and MapleStory 2, even GTA V sometimes. I don't expect the games to hit 144FPS all the time but the quality just feels like I'm playing on a cheap laptop. I have a Surface Pro 4 that I compare the same games too, and my high-end PC feels like it the same as my SP4. League FPS can't maintain higher than 100 in all my games.

List anything you've done in an attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Reinstalled Windows 10. Updated Drivers. Updated Bios. Turn off programs not related to the games. Tried to get my ram speed to go from default 2100Mhz to 2900 Mhz for Ryzen CPU. Ram was rated for 3200 but only works up to 2900, anything higher will crash PC.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

I don't think photos are necessary. I have 7+ HDDs in my computer (dead) it's very messy.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have no idea what to do anymore. Is it the games that do not like Ryzen? Is it the ram being bad?

EDIT: I used UNIGINE Superposition benchmark and here is the result... (https://htc.gg/i/jyrcva.png)

    Intel's upcoming RAM Capacity update.

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 08:17 AM PDT

This is a simple one (i hope lol). Intel is releasing an update to their boards and cpu's that allows for 128GB of RAM. Namely the Z390 chipset and all 9th gen cpu's, there could be others but thats what i'm going to buy. The update is in somewhere in December. But I have a couple of questions:

    1. If i buy i Z390 motherboard now, is it going to be compatible in the future? Or do i have to wait for the update before i buy.
    2. I don't get how DC sticks work, can someone explain? Or is it just as simple as a double in height to fit more memory. Is there any compromise for CPU Coolers?
    3. Is there any 1x32GB DC sticks available for purchase. If not when is it expected to be released.

    Question about wired internet

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 11:58 AM PDT

Built a pc a couple months back and I'm currently using a WiFi card, but the WiFi kind of sucks in my room.

This may be a dumb question, but if I have one of those Ethernet ports in my wall, can I plug a cable from that into my computer and have internet? Or is that not how it works?

Need a small, durable PC that can be shipped 2-4 times a year. Looking at a Corsair One but I'd really like to self-build.

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 07:49 AM PDT

I'm a college student who lives and goes to school on two opposite ends of the US. Up until now, I've dealt with that by having a gaming laptop (MSI GT70 & MSI GS73VR). Recently, I bought a glorious monitor (Samsung C32HG70 32" 144Hz 1440p) and grabbed a new keyboard so that I could use it as my main monitor.

Holy shit is a desktop PC experience incomparably better than a laptop one. Now my laptop just sits in clamshell mode all day (I have a cheap ThinkPad that I use as my classwork ultrabook), and might as well be a desktop PC.

My priorities are excellent cooling, low noise, and "shipability"; this is why I was attracted to the Corsair One: excellent liquid cooling on both GPU and CPU, practically silent, and built to be shipped to customers in the first place.

The problem is that I'm a massive PC-building nerd who is crushed by having to buy a pre-built PC (even though the Corsair One is a beautiful machine, I don't want to forego the experience of building one myself). Also, I'm very interested in AMD's future 7nm offerings and the One is an Intel+Nvidia exclusive.

How can I build a small, cool (preferably liquid), silent PC that's durable enough to be shipped 2-4 times a year, or should I just go for the Corsair for peace of mind?

Vega 56 and Freesync or 1070ti with NO G-sync

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 11:31 AM PDT

Recently purchased a 1070ti ROG strix advanced edition on sale for $400. I did not consider the price tag associated with G-sync when I made moves on the sale. I found a Sapphire pulse Vega 56 for around the same price. Do you guys think it would be better to keep the 1070ti and hope I can find a G-sync monitor for around $200-250 (my monitor budget), or cancel my order and search for the best AMD card I can find. Rig will be used for 3D modeling on Blender and gaming, and I would be overclocking both cards and undervolting the Vega should I go that route. Thanks everyone!

RTX 2070 vs GTX 1080 TI for 1440p 144hz gaming over the next two years

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 02:03 PM PDT

    Howdy, folks!

I'm having a tough time deciding between the RTX 2070 and GTX 1080 TI and was hoping to hear some outside perspectives. What I want is to be able to game at 2560x1440 144hz (possibly 165hz), and know that the card will be able to do so with most games released for the next two years. I don't care about having ultra settings on games though and am more than happy to turn down most settings. And I know that nobody can predict how resource intensive AAA games will be in two years, but I'm faithful that we can make some educated guesses.

So, what are your thoughts? Do you think the RTX 2070 will be able to handle upcoming AAA titles a year from now at 2560x1440 144 FPS [with graphics turned down]? Or is it a better option to shell out the extra money (which isn't preferable) for the GTX 1080 TI?

Building a PC for a Year 7 student new to PC Gaming

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 11:20 AM PDT

Today I was asked by My IT department to help out this year 7 kid, (about 12-13 years old, idk what the US equivalent is, sorry!) selecting and building his gaming computer. This is his first PC and I am enthusiastic about helping as a member of the PC community. I however, have nowhere to start on selecting the components for the rig, I've done my best to piece together a spec-sheet that is near his budget (about £6.17 over at the time of the part price). His budget is £650 including the monitor and other peripherals but preferably (and understandably) that's not a target price, anything cheaper but sparing performance is a plus.

    Link: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/tjD3jy

I've done my best to find the best price without cutting massive corners. Is there any improvement i could make to this to make it cheaper or better while saving money? Cheers!

Upgrading from 6 year old build + question about 9700k and 9900k

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 08:26 AM PDT

I'm upgrading my pc from 2012. Main use will be gaming at 1440p 144Hz and I already have the following parts:

HDD: Western Digital Black 7200 rpm 2TB

GPU: Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme 1080ti OC

The parts I was looking for were the following:

SSD: Samsung 500GB 860 EVO SSD

    MOBO: ASRock Z390 Extreme4

    RAM: Corsair 16 GB (2x8GB) Vengeance LED DDr4 3200 Mhz CL 16 1.35V

CPU Cooler: Thermalright Le Grande Macho RT

    Case: Cooler Master MasterCase H500

    CPU: Intel i7-9700k or i9-9900k

    PSU: Corsair 750W RM750x (2018) modular 80 plus gold

    OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Do all these parts fit fine together or am I missing something crucial? Will the cpu cooler be adequate for the cpu?

Now the big question is the CPU. I am looking to pick either Intel i7-9700k or i9-9900k. My old CPU is an overclocked 3770k. I remember choosing it over the i5 for the hyperthreading for future games and recently it seemed to be the wise choice as the 3770k greatly struggles (for example wild FPS fluctuations and other stutters on 100% usage) in newer games such as both BF1 and Blackout in Blops 4 and the i5s seem to have it even worse. I'm asking if the situation is the same now as it was then that it might be worth to shell out the higher price of the 9900k (around 120 euros more than the 9700k where I live) in order to game somewhat smoothly for a year or two longer than on the 9700k? Mind you I'm not really upgrading that often and I'd really like to the CPU to last me as close to the time that the 3770k lasted for me as possible.

    I greatly appreciate all help!

    H400i radiator orientation

    Posted: 24 Oct 2018 09:50 AM PDT

    Hey all,

So the NZXT h400i has a front panel that lets you mount a radiator which is neat but I noticed that it's already setup for an intake meaning that the system would be pulling hot air off the radiator and dumping it into the case.

Am I missing something or is placing a radiator here just a bad idea?
