The router has the ability to redirect the syslog to a different location, so since I am using the pihole server for DNS, I would also like to be able to see deeper traffic requests on the same server. Does anyone have a link to add in a syslog setup and visualizer (with DNS resolution / maybe by category {kids in the house}) so I can see not just ads blocked, but traffic from the individual devices?

Posted: 24 Oct 2018 07:10 PM PDT So my service provider Service Electric is providing me 150 MB Download and 25 MB Up. As the night progresses it barely sustains that data transfer. So I called up yesterday and asked for it to be looked at. Somehow my internet seemed perfectly fine to them even though I can barely even load netflix on night, watch twitch or even load videos on youtube at 480p. So I did a test with multiple sites, speedtest.net Fast.com , google speed test and secv's speedtest. Speedtest.net test tell me 150mb down, however its only pinging to the closest area to connect which is MY PROVIDER. if I change the server to ANYTHING outside of my area, it goes to 1.5~10MB's download. I tried changing my DNS to google's primary and secondary DNS but that doesn't seem to do much except make it worse. I'm running a Surfbord Docs 3.0 into a Netgear N900 . And I'm wired in directly. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Router that can handle 100+ concurrent clients Posted: 24 Oct 2018 07:34 AM PDT As titled, I'm looking for a reliable solution for 100+ concurrent clients, connected at all times and doing constant (albeit) small requests. I'm currently using an old Airport Extreme that can handle up to 50 clients (per specs) - pair with an Unifi AC Pro as AP. I'm very impressed with Ubiquiti so far, is EdgeRouter X a good choice? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Could someone help me understand real-world speeds on my Router? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 07:48 PM PDT Here is a screenshot of speed test from my Pixel Book, results are the same on my MacBook Pro 2017 over Wi-Fi. https://i.imgur.com/8NsKnoe.png I have a 1Gig Fiber connection, over Ethernet at the Router I can speed test anywhere between 600mpbs down and over 900mbps down depending on the time/day and i have tried multiple speed test sites with little to no variance. I recently upgraded from a Lnksys WRT1200AC to an Asus RT-AC86U 2900. While I understand there are major differences between advertised speed and real world speed I regularly see my upload hitting 400-500mbps on Wi-Fi. So with a Gig connection and this router why can't I see those speeds on download? I haven't even seen it break 300. Is there something settings wise I need to mess with maybe? [link] [comments] |
Most Reliable Access Point Router & What Makes Access Point Routers More Reliable? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 07:40 PM PDT I'm in the market for a new access point router. I have had the TP-Link N750 for quite a while, but it frequently drops packets and resetting it works until it starts doing it again so I've isolated it to the access point. What should I be looking at for absolute reliability? I'm sick and tired of dropping packets in the middle of competitive games and having to reset the access point. Is it MU-MIMO 4x4? Dual core processors? Dual 5Ghz bands? What do you guys recommend? I don't want to spend on what I don't need, but what I do need is the best reliable wi-fi access point currently in the market. Is my router failing? What to replace it with? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 03:39 PM PDT I've been using a Netgear WNDR4000 N750 for several years now and it's been pretty reliable. Recently I saw a drop in my network speeds so I did some basic troubleshooting. I should be getting 100+ mbps through my internet provider. Hooked from my cable modem (Motorola SB1620), through Cat5 to my PC I'm seeing 130 mpbs. Connected through my router I only manage 35 mpbs. I did the usual turning it all off, unplugging, and turning it on again starting from the cable modem and working my way to the PC and I get the same result. The whole house is wired so I tried another PC just to make sure and I had the same result there. My guess is the router is failing. Am I correct? In the event it's failing I need to get a new one ASAP. There are so many choices and I don't know who makes quality stuff anymore. I've always used Netgear routers with no real problems, but I'm not hung up on having a netgear router. We have 2 desktop pc's, 1 ps4, and 1 ps3, connected via cat 5. Wirelessly we have a chromecast, samsung tv, 4 cell phones, and 2 tablets. I run my business from home, we stream a lot of movies, and my son plays games like PUBG and Fortnite, but I don't think that's really that demanding to need a "gaming" router. I've tinkered with DD-WRT back when it was fairly new (yeah I know that was a long time ago), and wouldn't mind a router that supports DDWRT, but I realize the FCC crackdown on RF settings and power output means most routers now are probably not compatible but it'd be nice to have this option. Again, not hung up on having that option either. I think we can get away with just a dual band router like the TP-Link C7 Archer C7 AC1750 which is just $80. I'd like to keep the cost under $100. Any suggestions for other routers or input on this router choice? [link] [comments] |
Help converting Cat5e phone line to ethernet Posted: 24 Oct 2018 08:22 AM PDT Just moved into a new house and we need a few LAN lines ran to the downstairs where my office will be; however, I need the router on the main level for obvious WiFi reasons. I'm not looking to run a LAN line to each room, really I just need one ran from the router (main floor) back down to the basement to a switch. I just discovered the previous owners used cat5e for all of their phone jacks. I found a suitable location for the modem/router, and planned to crimp the end of the wire for LAN. Here's what it looks like. There are a few wires tied (two running up the wall and one running down - I was able to locate the one running down into the basement, so I planned to connect the switch there). Can I untangle these wires, tape off the two running upstairs, and crimp an ethernet plug on the end of it? [link] [comments] |
Setting up a Network for Trailer Park Area Posted: 24 Oct 2018 05:54 AM PDT Hello everyone, my friend reached out to me yesterday with a question because I'm an "IT" guy . Unfortunately, I only have expertise in Desktop Support and I don't know too much about Networking so I'm enlisting you people :) My friend leads a Non-Profit organization and he wants to setup cheap, affordable internet for families living in a Trailer Park area, which would span to about 100 yards. His goal is to use the central community Trailer as a internet hub but extend internet access throughout the whole trailer park for those that want to purchase internet access through him. In general, what sort of equipment and resources would he need to purchase? Any ideas what would be the cheapest route to go about setting this up? Let me know if you need anymore details. Thanks! edit: additional info: There's about 20 trailers and the total dimension is 114 yards by 126 yards [link] [comments] |
[unsolved] Trying to fix a bricked wrt1900ac V1. Posted: 24 Oct 2018 06:36 PM PDT I'm out of ideas. I've been through everything I can find and I am not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if this thing is unrecoverable. Things I have tried: -30-30-30 reset (along with every other reset button option I could try) -Tried flipping the power on and off 4 times to get to previous firmware partion. -Ttl to USB cable using tptd64 and putty to try and restore original firmware (with static IP). The last step is where I am stuck, putty loads the router up and when I go to grab the file from tptd I get a bunch of "T"s across the loading bar eventually with a" tpt undefined error code 0" in putty. When I look at the logs for tptd it is showing "TIMEOUT waiting for ack block #0". I just can not get tptd to transfer the file for some reason. It has full network permissions and I'm not seeing it being blocked anywhere else. Anyone have any ideas or anything to try? More than happy to provide additional details or answer any questions. Long 150 foot ethernet cable causing SNR margins to drop. Whats going on? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 01:27 PM PDT OK so for several months I have been back and forth with our ISP on multiple calls out. I myself am very technical about line margins, exchange distance ect, so I knew the proper ways to test our lines and to give the technicians all the proper info that the average joe would not know, Well anyways the problem is that the SNR margins for the downstream drop and degrade on a daily basis until the router eventually drops the pair (bonded pair) and reboots to retrain and re-sync the line, The margins are usually around 9-10DB normally, I know its not great for 10Meg but its do-able. The weird thing is that the issue is being caused by me having a 150 foot ethernet cable running from the router into another desktop PC in the next building over. The ethernet cable I am using is fully outdoor rated and is properly routed and up on high posts. I cant for the life of me figure out why a long ethernet cable would cause the actual line SNR margins to degrade like this over time. I did a test over 15 times to ensure this was the issue. I unplugged it while closely monitoring line 1 and 2's SNR margins and sure enough every time I unplug the long 150 foot ethernet the SNR margins return right back up to their peak of around 9-10DB and stay there. And once the cable is plugged back in the SNR margins drop right back down to 5-6DB within the first 30 seconds and stay there. I will leave some technical info below. But the issue is not from the phone lines or anything physically wrong with the DSLAM, pins or the NID. Only from the 150 foot ethernet cable being plugged in. Posted: 24 Oct 2018 04:35 PM PDT I just installed 2 Cisco AIR 3500 series APs for my house that I received, hoping to give my home better wifi coverage while also breaking the ice with Cisco enterprise gear to prepare for a CCNA exam. I have googled extensively, followed Cisco documentation on configuration, etc. For some reason I cannot hit download speeds even close to what I should be getting (I've seen max 80Mb/s download which should be closer to 300Mb/s on a 5Ghz connection - I am close to my AP). The AP is fed over a POE injector from a gigabit switch and gigabit connection. I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me understand what is going wrong here. I can post any configurations that might be helpful. Thanks in advance, sorry if this isn't something that should be here, just let me know where I should post if I need to. [link] [comments] |
Networking solution for house with outbuildings? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 09:55 AM PDT Hello all, I am in way over my head here and could really use a point in the right direction. I recently bought a house that is about 3200 sq feet and also has two outbuildings where I need to get wifi. The layout is such that the first outbuilding, about 100 sq feet, is about 20ish yards from the house and then the second outbuilding, which is 950 sq feet, is another ~10 yards in back of the first. I am looking for a solution where I can get a good wifi signal in all three. [link] [comments] |
Help me setup my old router as an extender Posted: 24 Oct 2018 03:51 AM PDT My primary router is TP Link TL-WR841N (Master) My old router is Aztech DSL605EW (Slave) How can I use my old router as an extender for the house? It has a WDS system but idk what settings to change. Also idk if I'm supposed to use it as a Bridge, Repeater, Wireless Access Point. Not sure which one is appropriate for me. If it helps, I have a super long LAN cable which can connect the two routers to each other, but again idk what settings I need to make. Screenshots of old router setup pages: Lan>Lan Config>Lan Group1>Configure Please let me know if there are any other screengrabs to help understand this better. Thank in advance. [link] [comments] |
DOCSIS 3.0 channels old vs new and impact to speed Posted: 24 Oct 2018 03:22 PM PDT Hi all, Popped for the DOCSIS 3.0 Cisco DPC3008 that runs on 8x4 for channels way back when it was newish and a solid upgrade. I pay for 50M down, and that's all I need as I just stream, browse, and use my work laptop 99% of the time. Only thing where speed would help would be Xbox game updates, but I always just set those to run at night. Ok, that said, as of late I've been getting really variant download speeds, to the point where it's really slow, which impacts my work, and sometimes gets a few stutters on streaming. New couple moved in next door that work from home, and he's in tech so I guess it's feasible he could be impacting speeds, but may just be higher overall traffic in my area. So here's my question if anyone can help: Would it be worth upgrading to a newer DOCSIS 3.0 to get the 32 x 8 channels? (Netgear CM700-1AZNAS is the plan) I feel like it would help with speeds during congested times, and might just push me up even higher than typical as well. I'd considered a 3.1, but I won't be paying for that kind of bandwidth anytime soon, so figure why pay near double for something that likely won't do much for me. I figure things will continue to improve over time, or maybe we'll get lucky and get fiber. Only way that will ever matter to me is if I get into some sort of cloud gaming situation, which is likely way off. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Need help with equipment for a tall but skinny house rented out to some grad students? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 11:14 AM PDT I rent out my house to about 9 grad students that live across 3 floors. I also have a basement that is finished that has terrible wifi. Currently I have my standard home modem that comes from cablvision and a router from best buy. I've heard from everyone that it's sub optimal and I would like to upgrade to ubiquiti hardware. Everyone is mostly wireless, but the top floor has the router and so a few people have hardwired into it. I wanted to get this router https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter/ and then 4 of these APs (1 for each floor) UniFi HD UAP-AC-HD ($349) Now everyone here is a gamer and streamer and so I want a good network, but I don't want to overspend on 350 dollar access points if I don't need them. On the other side of this, I used the ubiquiti estimator thing to see what equipment I would need and it's not what I expected. It told me 4 of these: UniFi HD UAP-AC-HD UniFi® Cloud Key Can anyone help? I know enough networking stuff from a few classes in college, but I don't want to waste my money here. I've also never hooked up anything besides a store bought router. I have helped a few friends years ago drop some cabling and access points, but we're not in touch anymore. Thank you! Posted: 24 Oct 2018 01:46 PM PDT I'm finding it hard to decide what to purchase here, so I figured I might as well ask here on this sub. I'm trying to choose between some routers: Any stories of personal experience with any of these devices, opinions based on specs, recommendations for other routers, etc. are all welcome and appreciated. Context: long-story short, my current router/modem (Spectrum-provided Technicolor TC8715D) seems to be the root of some seriously annoying issues, so I figured it's time to try a new router. I want something that offers 5GHz and is great quality while also not being over $100, and will ensure me stable connection while playing online games. [link] [comments] |
Purchase Comcast router/modem for my parents? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 12:51 PM PDT My parents live a couple hours away from me and I'm thinking about purchasing them a Comcast-supported router and modem (or combo device) and doing away with the rental fee, but I am wondering if there is the potential for any problems, as they are not technical at all and as I said, I am not close by. Is it common to have to troubleshoot these devices once they are setup, or is it pretty much setup and leave it and never worry again? My fear is there will be some issue and Comcast will determine it's not on their end and my parents will be out of luck until I get time to visit them and troubleshoot the device. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Oct 2018 04:05 AM PDT Currently have Sky Q fibre but find that the routers WiFi performance is very poor and speeds are all over the place regardless of which channel is used, also don't like that it only has two LAN ports. Can't get Virgin where I am and already have Plusnet/BT as a potential but am also considering Vodafone, Origin and EE. Weary of Talk Talk given all their issues but their router seems to get good reviews so haven't totally discounted them. Any experiences with any of those in terms of speed throttling/downtime/router performance please? [link] [comments] |
Best NAS options for home network? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 12:05 PM PDT Hi Guys, I've just ordered in 300m of cat 6a and assorted jacks, panels and other stuff to go in my house before we start plastering. I'm thinking about my network solution in total. I'm wondering ahead of time what are the best options for network storage? Currently I'm not paying the electricity bills so naturally use my gaming PC for NAS. I've suddenly become conscious of my energy usage now I'll be paying my own bills. Anyway what do people use for this? Ideally I'll be able to open it up and stick spare drives in there as I have a 3TB USB HDD that could be liberated and put in there (I'm currently using it as a dumping ground for excess files that have overflowed my gaming PC). The absolute main concern though is energy usage (I'm assuming that bandwidth is a non-issue given I'm running cat 6a everywhere). The bare minimum of unnecessary energy output is ideal. I took a quick look at search and Seagate Personal Cloud was mentioned but Amazon don't seem to be selling that in the UK and I couldn't find any retailers for it. [link] [comments] |
Need help - How can I intercept the sql connection string stored on local desktop app? Posted: 24 Oct 2018 05:52 AM PDT I have a local desktop application that runs on Entity Framework. The sql connection string is stored within the application and I want to test security by checking if this can be intercepted by a network sniffer like Wireshark. I've never used Wireshark so have no idea how to go about this. Searching around online isn't providing much help. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
