Stop calling yourselves idiots or dumb when asking a question

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 03:22 PM PDT

You are not an idiot, you are not stupid, you are not dumb. You are asking for advice which is how you learn! No need to put yourself down with that kind of self-deprication. Everyone has their own reason for not knowing something, either you are new or you haven't been taught. Both those reasons are in no way related to your mental capacity. Enjoy the hobby, learn, and be happy!

First Build $1000. I am so stupid that posting advice in this thread probably counts as a tax credit for you.

Hi, building my first computer, was wondering if the fine folks here could evaluate some builds and give me some advice. I primarily use it for gaming, so the builds are designed towards that, and I already own a 2nd monitor and a mouse.

Additional things to note are that:

    • I like the idea of having a SSD for some stuff because I heard it lets you boot faster(?), but I am dumb so if you think it's not necessary and I should just go for more storage I will do whatever you say.

    • I'm not sure on the cooling of these builds. Do you think the fans built in will provide enough cooling, or should I look into a liquid cooler? I live in the Midwestern United States, so summers can get reasonably hot (up to 100F/38C).

    • Should I splurge a bit more for anything in particular that would make a big difference? Is there anywhere I can make cuts? I was thinking of maybe going for a better video card but I'm not sure.

    • Thanks for showing me that the Verge build video was bad, I actually bookmarked it until I came here, so good looking out.

    • If you've read this far you must know that you're special just for being you. There's nobody else in the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are.

I think PC building put my depression on hold

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:50 AM PDT

I built my first PC this summer, and although the finished product isn't perfect, it works, and it was surprisingly fun to research and build something like that.

Now, I've felt depressed to varying degree the last couple of years. Summer usually helps a little with the weather getting warmer and days getting brighter, but this one was substantially better. My build was on my mind for a lot of my waking hours - it really occupied my head so that other shitty thoughts found it harder to enter and screw me up. It was really nice. Whenever I go back to this sub now or watch PC build videos, that excited feeling returns for a brief moment.

I think the main idea here is that I needed something to be busy with, and a PC project was exactly that. Much thanks to this sub I avoided a lot of agitation with incompatible parts and flawed building as well, so... thank you!

Autumn closing in now, and I feel less energized. If I can afford it, I might have to switch out some components to get my heart racing a little again, haha. We'll see. Just wanted to thank you guys for helping to make my life a little easier for a couple of months :)

Ryzen 5 2600X "Includes AMD Thermal Solution" ?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:53 AM PDT

I just recently got all of my parts for my first build, and I got the Ryzen 5 2600X CPU. On the box it states that "This box includes an AMD Ryzen Processor, AMD Thermal Solution, Installation Instructions, and Limited Warranty Information." Upon inspection of the contents, I don't see any Thermal Solution. Is this because it is pre-applied? Or should there be an included tube of solution?

Edit: It does include a heat sink fan. Is this the thermal "solution" that they're referring to? Or is there pre-applied paste? Would it be obvious if there was pre-applied paste?

Edit 2: Thanks for the responses everyone. I realize now that there is indeed paste on it. It's a whitish circle of paste (I was hearing that it would be square) and I wasn't sure if it was a sticker or something due to how flat and smooth it was, and I didn't want to touch in case I would damage or negatively affect it.

Ryzen 5 2600 with other cooler, or 2600X with stock cooler?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:22 AM PDT

If I get a 2600 I will overclock, so will I get more value from getting a 2600 and buying 60-80 dollar cooler or a 2600X and using the stock cooler?

    Mounting a hidden 2.5 ssd

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 10:39 AM PDT

So I recently built my first PC with no real issues and am quite happy with it. The potential problem I have is that my case has two regular drive bays that are currently being used by an SSD and a HDD. I may want to add another HDD in the future and move my ssd to the hidden mounting spot behind the psu. The problem I have however is that when the SSD is screwed in place, there isn't any room for the sata power cables to plug in as the backplate doesn't allow anything with a curve to plug in. Am I missing something? Is there a spacer bracket or a straight sata power cable I should be using?

The case is a fractal design focus g for reference.

    Thank you!

    Certified idiot needs advice

    CPU: 3770 i7(Cooler included) https://ark.intel.com/products/65719/Intel-Core-i7-3770-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

    PSU: Corsair RM550X (Not brought)

    Motherboard: HP 657096-011 https://www.amazon.com/HP-657096-001-System-motherboard-assembly/dp/B00BJOPCJA

    Cabinet: Big

GPU: Asus GeForce® GTX1060 3GB DUAL OC (Not brought)

Harddisc: 4 * 300-500gb different brands (Planning on buying an SSD when i have the money for it)

Ram: 8gb was in the motherboard decent quality i was told

I couldn't find a lot of the parts on the part picking site so thought i would just try my luck with a homemade list.

So i have gathered some parts from old pc's and stuff, and i want to create a complete build out of it. Everything except the PSU and GPU are some old stuff i plan to reuse to same some cash. So my question is will it work together? My main concern is PSU and motherboard since my motherboard uses a 6 pin PCI for power, and the CPU uses 4 pin PCI, can i plug a exta 4 pin into the PSU to power the CPU? Thanks in advance. (First build so go easy on me please)

    Edit: Spacing

First Build, First Draft (so be gentle), Looking for Mid-High range gaming PC. Budget $9,00 - $1,350

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:54 PM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

This build is to replace my current machine. It is at least 4 to 5 years old and is running a Geforce GTX 760 and appropriate Intel CPU from that era. It has been having power issues as of late.

I intend to do some gaming (all things AAA, tons of 2D indie stuff), as well as watch 4k videos on a 4k TV.

I would also like the ability to drive a mid-range VR headset. I do not own one but would like to get one in the future. Doesn't need to be at full graphical capacity just want an the opportunity to be able to power one.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want to be able to max out 1080p games at 144 hz (or close)

I want to be able to play 1440p games at 60 hz (or better)

I want to be able to play 4k AAA games (on my TV) at any playable hz and settings (not a hard requirement)

I want to be able to play 2d indie games on my 4k TV with 60hz or better.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

The budget is very fluent. I want a PC that will last at least a few years, will drive a VR headset and will be able to run movies on my 4k TV. I will mostly be gaming on my 144hz monitor and don't care much about the resolution.

I guess my budget is in the range of $900 - $1,350, which I know is a large spread. I would like to be as frugal as possible, the cheaper the better (gotta pay those student loans...). There is no need for the top of the line anything, and to be honest last years model is usual fine with me.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA, Major City

About 45 min from a Microcenter but it would be nice to get it all delivered.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Please note this first draft build of my first pass. I read some guides and noted some of the specs I wanted to reach. I really don't know if this build will reach my guidelines, nor do I know if I am picking sub-quality brands/parts or parts at bad price points.

    Quick questions (if your interested):

    1. I have been on Intel/nVidia for years. Any reason I would want to switch to AMD?

    2. Are the pre-mades on the parts picker sites usually legit? This seems up my alley and is cheaper https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/htYcCJ/great-intel-gaming-build

Thanks for any help, or even any alternative builds. Pm me with any questions.

Motherboard Manual Doesn't Specify Where Front Panel Connectors Go...

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:37 PM PDT

I'm connecting Meshify C front panel connectors into an ASUS Prime B450-Plus motherboard.

These are the case cables provided: Power LED- Power LED+ Power SW Reset SW HD.D LED+-

The motherboard has a 20-5 pin F_PANEL connector, but it doesn't specify which pins go where. Literally the manual only says "This connector supports several chassis-mounted functions" but nothing else. Does that mean I can just plug them all in there or do I have to put them in specific pins? How I figure out where they go?

If you need a picture of the cables or panel I can do that.

Need a LGA1151 mobo that has RGB that will retain a profile on start-up.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:30 PM PDT

Long and short, I have those Corsair LL120RGB fans and they're great, but corsair software doesn't control the mobo.

It's a pain in the butt to open up a second app just to control my mobo lights that won't automatically load a profile on start-up (up your's, msi). I can't even just turn the lights off in the BIOS.

So, looking for a RGB mobo that has no problem loading a light profile on start-up.

Before anyone asks, Mystic Light and the MSI gaming app suck. They peaked at Afterburner.

    £350 - £400 to replace laptop.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:43 PM PDT

    Hey guys

I need a budget build within the price range of £350-400. It's important that i'm British and my currency is GBP so to the people kind enough to draft me a build keep that in mind.

I have room for upgrades in future but my main purpose for this pc is to browse reddit, work in photoshop, watch videos and some light gaming, Minecraft, league, cs go etc. A graphics card isn't required as I will probably upgrade in the future so an APU or regular cpu would be nice. Any help you guy can give is massively appreciated.

Also the gaming side of the pc isn't required just a nice price to performance pc that will get me through the day swiftly. Thank you.

Is my NVME SSD temperature out of the norm?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:27 PM PDT

Purchased a new WD Black NVMe SSD 500GB for my desktop and it seems to be running on the hot side? So far all I did was inalled Win10 (ran updates) & a couple of apps and yet the temps refuse to drop below 51 °C. PC is a Dell SFF Optiplex if that helps.

I have a 500GB Samsung Evo 970 in my ultrabook PC and at a steady state it stays below 40 °C (ranges from 31°C - 37°C). Should I be worried? Return policy gives me another 10 days to decide if I should go with another model.

What temps do y'all get at a steady state (no strenuous apps running) with your NVMe SSDs? 🤔

Fearing the AiO could leak inside my case and

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:23 AM PDT

    Hey,

I'm thinking of buying a Corsair H115i PRO RGB, the 280mm version. I've looked through the ratings on amazon and one dude wrote that his AiO leaked inside the case and destroyed some main components. He claimed that neither Amazon nor Corsair provided any support. How likely is an AiO to leak? I think a nice way to prevent any damage in case it actually leaks is putting some small towels inside in the first few minutes/hours of use. In overall, what do you think of the H115i PRO RGB as a product? Is it recommended to use for a Ryzen 2600X and how noisy is it?

My First Quality Quiet Build- Some critique?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 01:45 PM PDT

This is the partpicker list https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/pH4pV6

I will be using this mainly for gaming. I'm From Canada. I prefer decent cooling as I will be replacing 2600x with zen 2 or later and overclocking But I very much enjoy the most quiet build.

I Will be getting the morpheus II cooler + 2 noctua P12 redux fans. Meshify will have 2 Noctua NF-A14 intake on front and 2 Noctua NF-s12b redux as exhaust (back and top)

How does this build look so far? Any critiques on improving it for cost or suggesting different cooling? I was unsure of the Noctua D15 being worth it , but I was told its the most quiet and cools best.

This has been long time coming as I've only ever gamed on laptops and consoles. I don't have a lot of knowledge about PC parts and whether they would be compatible or not so any help would be appreciated :)

I do already own a keyboard (corsair k95), a mouse (logitech G502) and a monitor (Asus ROG Swift PG248Q). I don't know which case to get and whether I would need any cooling for this build or not. If it helps, I live in dubai and my room is always under 20 degrees (Celsius) . I will use this build mainly to game.

    Smallest VR Capable PC build?
