Aside from gaming, what are some other things that Windows still does better than Linux?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:55 AM PDT

I am planning to gradually switch over to Linux, mostly for the customizability and privacy, but what are some things I will be losing? I don't play video games so gaming limitations on Linux isn't an issue for me, but are there other things where Windows is still preferred over Linux?

How big of a security risk is disabling secure boot when dual booting a Linux distro as well as Windows 10?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 05:59 AM PDT

Title pretty much sums up the question. How big of a risk, or how much risk are you incurring by disabling secure boot on a dual boot system?

    Real-life bash scripting excercises

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:36 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

I'm practicing bash scripting. I did most of the things here:

    http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html//writingscripts.html

and now I'm left with mostly mathematical equations, which in the real world are not so much common in my opinion.

Can you write here examples of things you really needed to do your work and which could actually happen and would be good to know-how to do.

    *Note

Don't write some very sophisticated examples. I don't need to know how to fire a rocket to space with bash, but more Day to day automation tasks.

    Thank you in an advance,

    VM Suggestions

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:33 PM PDT

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a VM? I'm currently using virtual box to run windows in a VM so I can use office 366 for classes but it's so slow and in the future I plan on running games within a VM so I want to get comfortable with a powerful VM that can use my hardware to the best of it's abilities.

Also, this is totally unrelated, but would having a mouse, keyboard, and monitor plugged into a laptop cause enough power draw that the fans actually need to kick on?

SFTP & SSH For Transferring and extracting files.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 10:34 AM PDT

Why is it that I you use ssh to pack a folder to zip, but then have to use sftp to transfer it, then on the other end use ssh to unpack the files, can't the sftp not unzip and zip folders? as your having to login and logout of each session yeh I know you can have 2 windows open at one for ssh and the other for sftp.

Started Operating Systems subject on College. Having trouble intalling sudo

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:32 AM PDT

Hey everyone, first (of may well be many) post here.

Here's my dilemma. I've started on this subject today as you read on the title, and was just following the steps and reading some explanations on the operating system we'll be working on, Unix. I installed the virtual machine with 0 problems, and when I was trying to install sudo (for ease of access to certain commands from what I understood?) and I'm getting sol and the guide isn't really helping me.

So, here's what I'm dealing with. As you probably have figured, this is the first time I'm dealing with the OS and its terminal, so I have little to no idea what I am looking at. Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thank you for your time.

Installing Nvidia driver on Debian 9

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 10:06 AM PDT

    Good afternoon everyone,

I just started with Debian 9 this week. I have a lot of issues trying to install the Nvidia driver. I have a laptop with a Nvidia Geforce 840m. I had the following issues:

-The first time trying it gave me an error with Nouveau so I had to stop Nouveau in order to install it. After that, it kept giving me the same issue even though I stopped it.

-I run the nvida-driver command and it looked like it worked but when I rebooted, it gave me an error saying it couldn't start GNOME.

If you have any advice or procedure to make it work I will really appreciate it.

    Thank you.

Ubuntu doesn't detect my Wifi Driver. More Advanced alt?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 01:29 PM PDT

I installed Ubuntu onto a new machine, which I would like to use just for work. However, I found that even though Windows 10, preinstalled, had it working Ubuntu just doesn't ask or even notice it. No option which makes it hard to install new drivers if there are any.

Are there any alternatives to Ubuntu with more drivers? I don't know much about the laptop other than it's a HP and new enough for a USB C. My older HP seems to run fine.

Thanks for reading and looking forward to replies :-)

Gesture map keypad and bind key - help with Fusuma and xdotool

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 09:30 AM PDT

I've just installed my very first Linux on my L470 (Ubuntu 18.04) I have no idea what I'm doing, but I love it.

    I'm trying to:

Bind right click to PrtSc button.

It's between right Alt and Ctrl, and I prefer having it as a "menu key". I thought of using xdotool (GitHub | Doc) or xbindkeys (linux.com article), maybe binding "Shift + F10" to it, but I can't find a keycode for it.

    Gesture map the keypad

I like using three finger gesture to control media - tap to pause/play, up/down for vol up/down, left/right to switch track (less important).

I tried using Fusuma by following the GitHub ReadMe, but even the default settings don't work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Why do I keep freezing? Debian Stretch w/ Cinnamon, Lenovo Ideapad y470

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 01:07 PM PDT

Hi all -- I have an old Lenovo Ideapad Y470 that had some random freezing issues on Windows 7 & 10, so I decided to try Linux on it. Everything works great except I'm still having the same freezes. (The screen stays on, but I can't move the mouse or do anything.) I'm running Debian Stretch w/ Cinnamon. Previously, I tried memtest and ruled out a RAM error, and I've disabled the Nvidia card/switching in BIOS, so I don't think it's either of those components causing the issue. The error also happens on two different HDDs, so it's not that either...

It's particularly aggravating because the OS (whichever one I use) doesn't acknowledge an error occurred (see the logs below).

I appreciate the help! I realize this isn't strictly an OS issue, but I'm hoping I can use Linux to pinpoint the source of the error!

Screenshot of syslog from second crash:

EDIT: I should add that I wasn't doing anything special during the crashes. The first one was while I was browsing with Firefox, and the other happened several minutes later while I was viewing the logs from the first crash!

    boot failure_please advise

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 09:06 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have been getting major help from you guys so far :

This time, I am struggling with booting into linux mint on my external HDD on Mac Mini 2012.

It was working fine until soime time ago, when after the logo coming on, it dropped to shell or the GRUB bootloader failed. I have initially installed rEFInd but it stopped booting as boot manager after an update (I think).

    Please see attached photo.

Please advise as it is becoming a looong process to keep rebooting only to be successfully able to boot into Mint on like the 8th attempt.

Thank you so much in advance!

    YouCompleteMe can't import libtinfo.so.5

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:36 PM PDT

I tried to install the vim plugin YouCompleteMe. When I now start vim I get the error

The ycmd server SHUT DOWN (restart with ':YcmRestartServer'). Unexpected error while loading the YCM core library. Type ':YcmToggleLogs ycmd_55497_stderr_9xkqrg__.log' to check the logs.

In the error log it says

Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/CH_SWB/.vim/bundle/YouCompleteMe/third_party/ycmd/ycmd/server_utils.py", line 96, in CompatibleWithCurrentCore ycm_core = ImportCore() File "/home/CH_SWB/.vim/bundle/YouCompleteMe/third_party/ycmd/ycmd/server_utils.py", line 88, in ImportCore import ycm_core as ycm_core ImportError: libtinfo.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I then looked for libtinfo in my /usr/lib directory and apparently I only have libtinfo.so.6.1 and libtinfo.so.6 (6 seems to just be a symbolic link to 6.1).

When I search for libtinfo in dnf I get no result at all (not even version 6 or 6.1) so I think it might be part of a different package and that is why I don't get a result. Is there a way to find out which package I need to install to get version 5 or is there a better way to fix this?

    (Fedora 28, vim 8.1)

Is Linux always going to remain free and open source?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:32 PM PDT

Is there any possibility of Linux ever becoming closed source? I'm a Linux noob and have been using linux for almost two months, will all the talk about Linus taking a break and members of Microsoft sitting at board meetings its very worrying to think about. I only want to support free and open source software and fear for Linux becoming overtaken by greed and SJW's

When native software isn’t available, why do we tend to try “emulate” the windows version? Wouldn’t it be easier to work off the Mac version since linux and mac are more similar?

Everytime I update Linux Mint I Loose the option to use my wireless usb wifi adapter to connect to the internet and have to redownload drivers.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:31 AM PDT

Everytime I update Linux Mint I Loose the option to use my wireless usb wifi adapter to connect to the internet then have to carry my pc and all it's components downstairs to connect it via a wired connection to my home hub.

To then download the correct drivers via the driver manager as I don't have a wired connection upstairs then after all that hassle I am able to use things that require a network connection to work.

Is there a way I can avoid this as it is very annoying, maybe save the driver setup in a file so I don't have to connect via a wired connection to use it when updating/installing new versions of Linux?

    Cheers

Help with error messages when installing linux

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:44 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I hope this is the right subreddit for my question.

I am a Windows user that wants to switch to linux. However, for some reason I cannot install any distro. I've tried to install ubuntu, debian and manjaro.

The only thing I get are some error messages when I want to boot from my boot-stick (https://i.imgur.com/hGsAhgm.png & https://i.imgur.com/ZMst9Wm.png)

    Used hardware:

    • MB: ASUS MAXIMUS VII RANGER
    • CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K
    • GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 STRIX O8G
    • SSD: Samsung 850 EVO Basic
    • RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport (2x, 8GB, DDR3-1600, DIMM 240)
    • Powersupply: Corsair CS750M (750W)
    • Case: Fractal Define R6

    Advice is needed, thanks.

    Things I've done so far:

    • Updating my UEFI to the newest available version.
    • Using different software to create a boot-stick: (Etcher, rufus, UNetbootin, MultiBootUSB)
    • Using different USB-sticks

Edit: Added more hardware & typos.

    More Storage

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 10:25 AM PDT

I bought a used computer from a surplus event with a small 128GB SSD. I partitioned it out at 90GB for Windows and like 40GB for Ubuntu for a dual boot set up. 40GB is not that much and I'm getting closer to filling it. I want to go buy 2TB HDD, but I'm not sure how to manage the 2 drives on Linux. Should I partition the 2TB drive, then merge the corresponding partitions of the other drive into 1 volume for each OS? In Ubuntu, is there a way to keep my 'favorite' programs on the SSD and things like build tools, compilers, and documents on the HDD? Is there an even better way to manage my storage?

Help can't find anywhere answer anywhere Libvirtd

    Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:58 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have few KVM hosts using libvirtd but i sometimes get this weird bug that libvirt stops working and what i found out that that stoping libvirtd and deleting xml storage files in /var/run/libvirt/storage/ directory and starting it again libvirt starts working normally again and i can't find why this happens or how to debug. The process itself show as running without any errors but restarting it virsh list command wont show anything it gets stuck at that. How i found this bug is when i migrate clients between hosts it takes really fast depending on the size but sometimes it just wont migrate and restarting libvirtd shows as running after deleting xml files it gets back as normal.

Really sorry it's really hard to explain to me how it happens because sometimes it happens three to five times a weak or sometimes it wont happen for weeks. So i just tried my best to explain my situation so i as wandering that maybe someone had the same issue or how to debug this situation?
