Configuring Second WiFi Router Behind AT&T Router on the Same Subnet Posted: 18 Sep 2018 03:21 PM PDT I recently switched to AT&T from Comcast, where I had been using my own Netgear R7000 as my router. I connected the Netgear to my AT&T router (BGW210) from LAN port to LAN port, as I want the devices connected to the Netgear to be on the same subnet as the devices connected directly to the AT&T router. Once I rebooted both routers and connected all of the wireless devices to the Netgear router, all wired and wireless devices can get internet, and I can print to my wireless Brother printer, but I don't see my Netgear router on the device list on the AT&T, so I don't know what ip to navigate to get the Netgear UI. I also can't find my wireless ip camera that should be connecting to my Netgear on the AT&T device list, even though the connection parameters for wifi connection to the Netgear haven't changed. The AT&T router's device list does show other wired and wireless devices connected directly to the Netgear router, though, so the AT&T router does seem to be assigning ip's to at least some of the Netgear connected devices. I suspect there is some basic configuration step that I'm missing but I don't know what that is. The AT&T router's UI has a check box to select if you have a second router behind the AT&T router, but I haven't checked that because I assume that is only for if you want your second router to create it's own subnet. Maybe I'm wrong about that? Related question: my actual preference would be to have my Netgear router manage my entire subnet rather than my AT&T router, but because of physical topology restrictions, I need to have some wired devices connected to the AT&T router's LAN ports. Is it possible to set the AT&T router to IP passthrough yet still have devices attached to it's LAN ports? If so, would they be able to be on the subnet that is being managed by the second router? Posted: 18 Sep 2018 02:30 PM PDT Need help with this. My computer is located on the opposite side of the house of my router so I still get high download speeds on 5Ghz but super high ping and lag spikes in games. On 2.4Ghz I get lower ping and no lag spikes, but a low download speed. I was wandering if I have two Wi-Fi adapters dedicated to each band if I can force games to use the 2.4 adapter and everything else to use the 5 adapter. I tried ForceBindIP but some games do not allow you to launch them outside of the launcher, unless I am doing something wrong. [link] [comments] |
Remotely connecting 2 computers to share files Posted: 18 Sep 2018 07:30 PM PDT I have spent the last several weeks trying to figure out how my friend from a few hours away can send a file directly from his computer to mine. I have a Linux computer that is always running, with lots of hard drive space. How can I set it up so he can remotely access and save files without using a service that either A. charges money or B. reads all the files in between. I have tried to configure a vsftpd server and it works locally, but how do I connect to it from outside my network? I have port forwarding setup on my router, and I have the external IP address, but what do I physically have to type into a remote web browser to see and access files? [link] [comments] |

New FTTH overloading ASUS. Need advice on gigabit replacement (USG vs ER4 vs RB4011) Posted: 18 Sep 2018 09:28 AM PDT I recently upgraded from Comcast 300/15 to FTTH symmetric gigabit for $10 less/month on CenturyLink and didn't want to lease their modem or fork over $100+ to buy their Zytel C2100Z. I set up my Asus AC88U to do the PPPOE VLAN duties and it works pretty well at around 750/700 but pegs out 1 of the cores at 100%. I've also noticed it overheating with the CPU temp over 75*C and getting some odd web behavior from some of the downstream clients. I couldn't even connect to the admin page yesterday (routing functioned but was unresponsive). Also, this is not the ideal location as the house switch panel is in the basement and wireless performance has dropped since moving the main router down there. All that said I'm looking to replace the ASUS AC88u with a dedicated router (no wireless req'd) in the basement that can handle the gigabit PPPOE VLAN tagged connection without maxing out its capabilities. I also have another AC66u that I'm using as an AP in the master bedroom end of the house and would put the AC88u back on the main level as a second AP. I don't have too complicated of a network and don't want to introduce much for the sake of it but do want to future proof a bit with this investment. I have ~20 wireless and 8 wired clients (including always uploading Nest cam, PLEX server and several streaming devices). No VLAN's now but like the idea if it's feasible. My research so far has me narrowed down to a Mikrotik or UBNT solution with the front runners in the title. Unifi USG, EdgeRouter 4 or MikroTik RB4011iGS+RM. My target budget is <$200 and it seems like the ER4 and RB4011 would be best able to handle my needs but the simplicity and lower price of the USG has me intrigued with the reviews I've read. I am concerned about it's ability to handle gigabit and future growth not to mention I don't have any other Unifi gear to utilize the controller. Seems like a lot of folks here are fans of Mikrotik for the price/performance/features but I honestly think 80% of those features will be beyond me not to mention the RB4011 just came out and isn't really available just yet. The RB3011 is a possibility but for only $20 more it seems the RB4011 is a much more capable device and I'm willing to wait a few weeks to get a better product I'm probably going to use for ~5 years. Any advice or recommendations you knowledgeable bunch can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Sorry for posting so many threads, just desperate. Posted: 18 Sep 2018 03:06 PM PDT Update 3: WiFi or Ethernet on laptop kills the network at random, about once every 5 minutes, for 60 seconds. The laptop does NOT flood or overload the network, it just randomly kills it. Things I have tried: so far, I am just clueless. I don't even need to know HOW to fix the issue, I just want to know what the hell the issue is so I can FIX IT myself. This laptop's MAC address is signed as the management MAC, and this laptop is the only thing on the VLAN that can access the AP controller. I am SO lost and I am starting to really get pissed at this damn thing. [link] [comments] |
New Router, ssh port fwd not working Posted: 18 Sep 2018 03:00 PM PDT So I got a new TrendNET AC1900 i set the port 22 to forward and can connect fine. in my putty i had remote desktop mstsc tunnel set to mymachine:3389 and localhost:3400. this setup worked for years on my old router. remoting to localhost:3400 at work would bring up my machine at home. Now, with my new router i can ssh in fine and mstsc doesnt work. any ideas? thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Sep 2018 05:51 PM PDT I'm posting this in /r/Homenetworking because it's not an issue when local and only when I'm on a VPN. I have a build environment set up locally in Ubuntu 16.04 that contains source code and all the tools to compile it. I have Samba set up so that the files can be shared with Windows machines to edit source code. This works great and all is fine. From a remote location, if I use OpenVPN to connect to the local network, I have access to everything network related as I would expect. I can also see the Samba share and access files from Windows. However after a period of time if I try to save a file I've been editing, I very often get an error saying that the file may already be in use. If I close the editor and try to reload it, I get an error that the file doesn't exit. I have to go through several iterations of refresh and sometimes starting again from the root directory to gain access again. The symptom is as if the VPN connection has reset but I know it's not a connection issue. My putty SSH sessions are rock solid as well as any VMWare console sessions. It seems only to be an issue with Windows directly accessing and editing files. Anyone have ideas on what I can do to fix this? I found a post online about accessing Samba files over VPN and the post suggested to add a line to smb.conf with hosts allowed = <VPN IP RANGE>. When I tried this it broke share and the remote Windows session wanted a password (which I know to be correct) that it wouldn't take. Thanks for any responses. [link] [comments] |
Issue with my 5G band on my home wifi Posted: 18 Sep 2018 05:48 PM PDT So I have an Arris TG1682 router and I was thinking of upgrading because my 5G band just does not seem to reach master bedroom. My phone will show I am connected to wifi but if I try loading anything the connecting just hangs and times out. If I cycle the wifi on/off on my phone it works fine but thats the only way I can get it to work. My MB isn't even that far away (ie maybe 25ft) My girlfriend has the same issue as well with her phone. I do have a lot connected to the 5G. So would that be interfering with it? The non 5G band works fine and I don't have any issues but I would rather not have my phones on the slower connection. So my question is, is it worth upgrading the router to say Google's mesh system or something equivalent or should I just take a few devices off the 5G and reset the network? If I should upgrade what do you recommend? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Why is my Airport Extreme still better than everything else? Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:41 AM PDT I've been having this problem in my household recently. My airport extreme is on its last legs but for the lest 3 years I've had it, its worked like a charm. And throughout the day, when it is working, its working great. Let me explain what I have connected Modem is a Motorola Surfboard 6141 Router is the last Airport Extreme Usually 125-200gb Down and 10-12gb Upload from ookla speedtest The one airport extreme is covering about 2500 sq feet, upstairs and downstairs. In the furthest corner of the house there are two smart TVs that are connected and it is in those locations that I get the lowest signal. I've tried using a netgear powerline adapter and a second airport extreme but I found additional network issues. I've since unplugged the powerline adapter and went back to using the solo router. The internet randomly gets slow or under heavy load. Computer that are hardwired by internet will have an issue where if i'm using the internet or playing a game, and a youtube video tries to buffer, all my internet on my computer will stall until that youtube video finally loads the first few seconds, or until I cancel the youtube video window. Not sure what the cause of this is. This is my first and main network issue In attempted to solve said network issue I've bought several routers, the latest being the XR500. None of them are significantly better than the Airport Extreme, if at all. The range does not compare as a Nighthawk doesn't seem to cover as much as the Airport since it's not built for that. I do not believe mesh wifi is an option because I don't have ethernet ports in the various rooms of the home. Price does not matter, I'm looking for a solution one and for all. I would appreciate all input. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Confused on adding another powerline adapter. Also ethernet question. Posted: 18 Sep 2018 05:20 PM PDT Hey everyone, I recently connected a powerline adapter to my ps4 and I am getting about 40mbps download and 6mbps upload on a 200mps spectrum internet on a router that supports 100/10 per port. If I add another powerline adapter to another room, how will that affect the bandwith that is coming through that port i have the first adapter connected to? Will it split the download and upload or only do that when both are connected or not at all? Lastly, I realized one of my ethernet cords is shorter than needed and I was wondering if it would affect the connection of anything if I used a female to female plug to extend with another ethernet cord? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need help figuring where my speeds are or what we wrong Posted: 18 Sep 2018 01:32 PM PDT So on my current desktop I have an Netgear AC6210 or AC 1200 https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-adapters/a6210.aspx Anyways, the other day our internet went out and the "network" reset itself somehow not sure about that but anyways, I had to reconfigure it back to normal how I had originally set it up. So before the outage my PC would get anywhere from 8-14 mpbs on Steam downloads on 5 GHz. Now it's capped steady at 4.0 - 3.8 mpbs I thought I was crazy because this was on my laptop at first so I plugged in the adapter from my desktop into the laptop and same results. I go to my girlfriend's house and my laptop was hitting 7-10 mpbs no problems. My question is what could have happened when the network reset to make my speeds slower than what they were ? What can I do to bring it back to normal ? Or fix it. I'm not able to ethernet in this house (Parent's rule's stupid I know) I just want my super fast speeds back. So I walked around the house trying to stream video on 5 ghz and it kept buffering it's almost as if it's not even on 5 ghz anymore like it on 2.4 with the way it's performing. [link] [comments] |
Is ASUS AIMesh worth bothering with? Posted: 18 Sep 2018 01:22 PM PDT I've been running multiple routers in my home for years, in fact when I built my home I designed it so that I had multiple rj45 ports built into the larger rooms and each room had at least one. As well as a 48 port non smart switch to connect all the ports in the house.
When I moved in I put an ASUS AC68U router (with merlin) in the basement with the modem, and then using two other AC68U's as access points on each floor, using the same SSID I have in theory built a "mesh" network across my house and in the years I've had this setup going I've never had an issue with any portable device loosing connectivity when going between floors. (router and APs)
On sort of a yearly basis I take down my network, make sure the routers are all brought up to date with the latest version of merlin and then re-setup the network as a single router and dual access points.
This year however is different. I was researching what our current system is calling "mesh" networking (as if it hasn't been around for 50 years) and I found that Asus has integrated into their firmware a "AIMesh" application. This would allow a system like what I have to communicate in the same function I'm already doing, hoping between multiple access points and not losing connectivity.
So I guess after all that, I'm wondering if it's worth loading the Asus firmware back onto my routers and see if the "AIMESH" works any better than just my setup of access points and using the same SSID across the network. I know theoretically the difference between "Mesh" and "access point" is supposed to be a physical cable between the two access points. But I was wondering if AIMESH had a communication control that would make things better than the setup I am currently using. [link] [comments] |
Stuttering home network issue [wired] Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:55 PM PDT I have an issue with my home wired network where download speeds will stutter, meaning a download on my PC or Xbox will go from 50 Mb/s to 0 and then back to 50 several times during the download. If I switch the device to a wireless connection, the issue does not occur, and sometimes, it will actually attain faster peak speeds. I have a AT&T Fiber modem connected to a Netgear Nighthawk router. Then I have cat6 traveling to one "dumb" switch, more cat6 to another "dumb" switch, then cat6 to each wired device. All of these devices are gigabit-enabled. I know it's hard to troubleshoot this with such a broad description, but any advice on how to determine the root cause, monitor the issue, etc. would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:58 PM PDT Hello, I am trying to connect to a public WiFi hotspot about 45 meters from my flat. The WiFi is gigabit, and standing next to it I get ~160 mbs on my phone. What sort of antenna should I be looking at for the best connection and speed? The WiFi hotspot does have a login page. [link] [comments] |
I need 6 weeks of internet in a house without Ethernet or Wifi Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:04 PM PDT So I'm house sitting for an older relative of mine and she actually doesn't use a router or anything, she uses a phone hotspot for all her internet stuff. So the problem arises, as a teen who grew up in the 21st century I need internet not only to function properly but also because a decent amount of school work is done online too. What can I do to solve this problem? I need access for about 6 weeks [link] [comments] |
Point to Point wireless Reccomendations Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:56 AM PDT I have a small business which is located about 130m from my home. Due to recent growth in our business model we now have an ATT direct fiber line coming to our office (we have been on radio internet for the past few years and its killing us - rural location, fiber was the only option for anything better than 10/0.5). I'd like to bring this connection to my home but ATT will only provide the fiber to my office. Doing it myself seems like too much of a headache considering the number of water, electricity and sewage lines between the buildings. I considered running ethernet as well with some boosters, but also a headache. I've heard good things about Ubiquitis equipment but not sure on what products to go with - as some are for quite long distances and I only need about 150+ meters, thats powerful enough that I won't lose signal during a storm as I've had issues with in the past for long distance wireless. Tl;DR I'm looking for Point to Point wireless equipment that can at least sustain a reliable 100/100 connection over 120-150 meters with direct line of sight. Will be used for home purposes - 4k streaming, gaming. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:58 PM PDT My internet keeps rebooting, security log says "Ping of Death from x.x.x.x to my public IP", I've reset my modem and router, changed my public IP and it keeps happening. It's really only when I play on my Xbox one. Any ideas? Router and modem are both Belkin and I have Xfinity, I've also tried a VPN and it still happened. [link] [comments] |
Going to Buy A Mesh Network Set of Routers - WHICH ONE!? Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:43 PM PDT So I've relocated to the UK recently and am "living it up" with my in-laws. I've come to realize quite quickly that their house is seemingly a despot for WiFi signals. Their house is approximately 3800 sq ft for coverage and have decided the best alternative to ensure I can snag a signal no matter where I roam to would be a mesh network. Looking through the current market options, as well as taking into consideration my limited budget, I'd be considering the following systems:
What are you guys suggestions for the price to feature to operation ratio? [link] [comments] |
Help wanted: Identifying a slow Wi-Fi problem and/or optimizing network Posted: 18 Sep 2018 12:21 PM PDT Just moved so I have a brand new home network using Cox cable internet 300 mbps service going into an Arris SB8200 cable modem. From there, a Google wifi unit is hardwired to the modem, and from the wifi point to a switch (which is connected to TV, game consoles, etc.) I have two other Google wifi units... one in my office which has a desktop PC and one in the bedroom which is used mainly for portable devices and a Roku unit connected to the bedroom TV. Here is the issue: I am experiencing extremely slow speeds over wifi on my desktop PC. My most recent speed tests reported roughly ~1 to 3 mbps down and ~1 to 3 mbps up. Speed tests on our mobile devices show vastly faster speeds, upwards of ~350 mbps down and ~30 mbps up. My gaming consoles on hardwire get ~160 down and ~10 up, and on wifi they get ~65 down and ~7 up. It's only my PC that has extremely terrible speeds. (and I'm not able to test a hardwired connection due to lack of super long ethernet cable). To all you networking ninjas out there, what could be the issue causing my PC to experience such slow speeds? How can I optimize either my hardware or software to make the interwebs go vroom vroom? Any advice is greatly appreciated! edit: I'm a networking noob so respond in an 'ELI5' way if possible :) [link] [comments] |
HELP setting up coax for Internet Posted: 18 Sep 2018 10:29 AM PDT I currently only have one coax outlet that works with my modem (every room has coax outlet and Ethernet out) , but the location is horrible and WiFi is really bad on second floor. I just bought: https://www.amazon.com/PACK-Broadband-Ethernet-Generation-Supplies/dp/B01AYMGPIO?crid=3LX5H4XFF5B1K&keywords=moca+to+coax&qid=1537291425&sprefix=moca+to+&sr=8-4&ref=mp_s_a_1_4 (Moca 2.0 to Ethernet adapters). I then realized I only have one coax outlet which means I would have no where to plug the coax into to send internet back out to the other room. Is there anyway to make this configuration work with a splitter or something? Also I'm using power line adapters but they aren't playing nice and keep causing network issues. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Sep 2018 08:00 AM PDT Hello, Looking for a little insight before i purchase some parts. Long story short, I want to connect a device that outputs data over USB to my network so other devices can utilize this data. The device outputting data via USB is a Vesper Marine xb6000 AIS transciever. I am trying to connect it to a Microtik router to see the data on various wireless and wired devices. Preferably via ethernet cable. Would a simple USB to ethernet converter like this one work for this application? Any input very much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Problems trying to Use Archer C60 as an AP Posted: 18 Sep 2018 07:14 AM PDT Main Router: Arcadyan (Arnet Provider- Argentina). Arcadyan Status Page Second Router/ WIRELESS Access Point: TP-Link Archer C60 I've tried differents LAN IP and Internet Ips (Static, Dynamic, PPoe) and I can't manage to make it work. The Lan IP should be in the same network as the main router, so 192.168.1.2 would be correct. But I have no idea what should be in the Internet tab There isn't much information about the turning the C60 into an AP. Any ideas? Thanks [link] [comments] |
