Windows 10 question about systems upgraded from Windows 7+ Posted: 18 Sep 2018 04:12 PM PDT Hey guys, I have an old system that recently suffered a hardware failure. I have backups and can probably restore it, but chose instead to build a completely new system and start over. I purchased a new professional copy of Windows 10 for ease and simplicity. However, now I have this old system and I'm wondering if it's possible to recover my Windows 10 key from it if I get it back online. It was originally a Windows 7 Professional that was upgraded when Windows 10 was brand new. I still have the windows 7 key and don't remember getting a windows 10 key during the upgrade process. I thought it just upgraded in place and did it all behind the scenes and never saw it (from my recollection). When I changed my windows 7 key in for the windows 10 did it turn the install into an OEM type install or can I recover the key for future use? Like if I build another box for a family member or something. It's not a big deal if not, but a spare copy of windows could be useful in the future. Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 Sep 2018 05:26 PM PDT I was watching YouTube for a bit then my mouse started right clicking and left clicking excessively and I had trouble moving my mouse around, I had a hard time shutting down my PC so I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL and was able to sign off my PC then shutdown the PC. Trying to install gpedit.msc on windows 10, only gpedit.dll shows up, instead ot .msc Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:54 AM PDT So I am following this guide to enable group policy editor in windows 10. Everything is good until this step:
I can find these folders, but the only problem is that instead of gpedit.msc file, I only find a gpedit.dll file. Can someone help me with this [link] [comments]
Clicking a desktop shortcut or folder just shows the properties Posted: 18 Sep 2018 06:38 PM PDT I'm on Windows 10 on my main computer that's x64, and my cat got on my keyboard so I unplugged the keyboard to not have it screw anything up on something I was working on. She was on a few keys that were on the bottom rows. After she left I went to plug the keyboard back in and now when I try to type in google chrome something in the url it ends up not typing, and clicking on something on the browser's window just shows the save as window. This is super annoying and had to use that other laptop to upload this. [link] [comments]

Posted: 18 Sep 2018 11:20 AM PDT Any time I try to install Windows Updates or Microsoft Store apps to my PC it wont start downloading and it will give me this code: 0x80070424 . I am trying to install Forza Horizon 4 Demo, TranslucentDB and Macro Rocks theme. I have tried using Google or Troubleshooting but both haven't fixed my problem yet, so I decided to come here. An installation support file could not be installed Posted: 18 Sep 2018 09:12 AM PDT I tried reinstalling a game (Star Wars Knights of the old Republic (KotOR)) but got an error message that said: " An installation support file could not be installed". I got that error message before and fixed it with revo uninstaller. This time I fogrot to delete 2 files and only deleted 1. After that Revo uninstaller couldn't find KotOR i tried it finding it trough the regedit (Registration-editor) but i couldn't find it because the file I deleted was the only one named something with Knights of the old Republic. How can I fix this and be able to install the game again? [Edit] The game is on 4 CD's, I didn't get it on steam or anything like that [link] [comments]
Weird issue when checking someone's pc Posted: 18 Sep 2018 08:51 AM PDT I was checking someone's pc because they told me they can't start their computer. I turned on the system and the first thing I saw was the "checking file system" which is not so uncommon for a windows machine as you know. I cancelled it, tried to get into the windows, logged into the user account. I noticed the system was extremely slow for some reason. Then a few seconds later I saw a tons of programs randomly appearing without me even touching anything. like multiple instances of calculator, and numerous instances of user installed apps. Then after 30seconds or so they all started closing and then windows rebooted itself. I never seen anything like this. It felt like it was a virus or a someone put a script to run multiple programs at once and then close them and then reboot the system. I started running various virus/malware scanners from boot/outside windows but they didn't find anything. Then I used "Hiren BootCD" to check the system registry to see if there is any key related to run some sort of program or script during startup. found nothing. I even looked up for .bat and .cmd files on the machine but couldn't find anything suspicious. Here is their pc config: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5400, 4Gb of ram, 512Gb HDD drive Windows 7, with no internet access I did a full repair and check disk using windows 7 disc. The system can boot fine into windows at the moment. and that weird issue when I first had was gone. I did bump into a bunch of blue screens when working on their pc. And I'm currently running tests on their Ram and HDD to see if they have any hardware issue. But I'm so confused right now. Was that multiple programs running at startup a virus? or a malicious user script? or some other thing was causing it Have anyone ever had any issue like that? Should I still be looking for a malware inside their computer or not [link] [comments]

Best way to install Office these days? (legally) Posted: 18 Sep 2018 07:48 AM PDT Get Office app from store? The click-to-run thing? Download each program individually from Microsoft website? Download iso? There are so many options I'm a bit confused. Sorry for the noob question. [link] [comments]

Are you serious Windows Defender? Posted: 18 Sep 2018 10:01 AM PDT I've been trying to clean up my computer using Windows Defender... I tried the quick exam with no problem. The personalized exam (chose a few folders), without problem. When I try the complete exam though... wow. Just.... wow. I'm beyond annoyed. PROOF:https://i.imgur.com/Y0AUSL4.png FIFTEEN HOURS LATER this thing is only like 5% of the way. FIFTEEN HOURS. You read that? FIFTEEN. Is it really that hard to run an antivirus check? At this speed, it would take a week for it to complete... or more. Oh, and to make it worse, this computer can't recognize I'm doing an antivirus check and goes to sleep, actually making the antivirus check much longer because I have to start over. How hard is it to make a computer that can detect the fact that a computer MUST NOT SLEEP during an antivirus check? You shouldn't have to be this savvy... I know I have to disable automatic sleeping but I figured an operating system in 2018 would have a feature that did NOT put the computer to sleep during antivirus checks!!!! Windows is probably one of the worst OS I've used. It has so many minor, random, dumb mistakes and glitches. Can't scroll sideways on most software. Comes bundled with one of the most annoying antivirus software ever made, McAfee... would take too long to list all the stupid glitches Windows has. Takes forever to recognize a stupidly simple MIDI keyboard. I can't use After Effects correctly because of some stupid driver problem that is impossible to fix. OH, and I bought this computer brand new and I keep getting the warning that my OS is not original and I must enter the serial code. But my serial code is invalid! And it's brand new!!!!!! Only reason people keep using Windows is because they're not computer savvy... the guys at Windows clearly suck at user interfaces, user experience, and the process of testing a computer before selling it to the public... EDIT: Yes I used the bug flair... because an antivirus check taking so long is clearly a BUG [link] [comments]
How to remove OneDrive account from Word? Posted: 17 Sep 2018 09:53 PM PDT I unlinked the account but it won't stop showing in word when I click "Save As". It shows two different accounts (one from when a friend signed in on my pc because they needed it) and it won't go away. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
