    Aero 15x refresh

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 05:51 AM PDT

Looks like a refresh is coming 03/04/18.

    • Slimmer chassis 18mm • FHD TN 144hz or IPS 4k display options • Keeping both the 1060 and 1070 GPU options

    https://m.hexus.net/tech/news/laptop/116336-gigabyte-teases-aero-15x-bezel-less-144hz-panel/

Was hoping for an 8th gen CPU but the 7th gens performance is still really good for this laptop. Might be my next purchase!

Intel Kaby Lake G: i7-8705g with AMD's Vega M GL less performant than a 1050?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 11:52 AM PDT

Based on this relative performance graphic of gaming at 1080p, seems like it might be the case :/

    https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/3061/radeon-rx-vega-m-gl

With the GL at 100%, it lists the 1050 at 116% and 1050 Ti at 145% ... 🤔🤔🤔

...Maybe it might not be worth waiting for the new Spectre/XPS 2 in 1 after all...

HP Envy 13 8th Gen W/ mX150 in the UK?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 10:22 AM PDT

Hi guys, I've been looking around for a laptop for uni next year for quite some time now, and want to keep it around £1000. I think I've settled on the Envy 13, and I'd like to have the one with the MX150 as I'm keen on CSGO and Overwatch on my PC and would like to keep playing when I leave home but value ultrabook portability over any sort of gaming laptop.

The issue I'm having is that the only MX150 variants I can find here in the UK are with 7th gen i5-7200u or i7-7500u as opposed the the 8th gen ones available elsewhere. I've seen an 8th gen on John Lewis but it's with the integrated graphics which I'm not keen on.

Does anyone know where this is available in the UK, or would I notice no real difference meaning I'd be better just going for the 7th gen models?

    TIA

Is it possible to change laptop HDMI GPU signal?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 02:00 PM PDT

My laptop has dead LCD screen so I have to connect it to my TV via HDMI. Now when my laptop reboots, it's going into some Advanced Reboot screen and at that phase, the laptop isn't allowing the HDMI unit to work or send a signal to my TV/Monitor, hence I cant see the continue button and arrows won't navigate and pressing enter doesn't do anything.

I believe I might be stuck in the boot loop. I know the GPU is constantly trying to send a signal to the LCD screen but is there way I can change it? I disconnected the LCD screen but haven't opened up the whole laptop. Is it possible disconnecting something around the GPU will change the signal?

Microsoft Compete extended service plan might not cover SB2 in EMEA

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 01:51 PM PDT

purchased a SB2 with the complete extended plan from switzerland yesterday, but at checkout it said in bold red that it does not cover the SB2, only the Surface Laptop. Spoke to support this morning and they confirmed that it does not, and that it is expected later. Not sure if that applies to all of the EMEA or just CH. I still can't cancel the order, I posted the details in the surface sub.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/85merr/sb2_purchase_on_microsoft_store_gone_bad/

has anybody successfully purchased a SB2 extended care in Europe?

Laptop recommendation; specifically comparing ideapad 720s, Spectre x360, and Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 11:10 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$1,000 before taxes.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Looking for quality battery life and good specs for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight less than 5 lbs would be optimal. Thinner doesn't equal better for me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Coming from Mac but just can't excuse the price anymore

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inch would be awesome. 13in over 15in though. Need it to be more portable than a 15in would be.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will be running statistics software occasionally and maybe some light gaming if able, but not a strong need due to time constraints. Mostly for heavy browser use as I typically have 8-10 tabs going for research work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Never played games on PC. If I were to play I would be interested in fortnight and CSS? Not sure how demanding that would be.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Preferences towards reliable build quality and good touchpad/keyboards as I use them so frequently. I don't need other knickknack shit like finger-print readers

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm coming from a Mac, and the one thing I can really appreciate from my Macbook is the build quality and nice trackpad. I honestly am just sick of being on apple trains and want off. Most of my usage will be day to day browsing and writing papers.

Some of the computers I have looked at specifically:

    1. Lenovo IdeaPad 720s - $849, 14in, 8th gen i7 processor, 8.0gb mem, 256 SSD and NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics card. Seems like amazing stuff for the price so it's scary I don't see more recommendations for it? Hesitant based on reviews of loud fans, and customer service? from lenovo.

    2. HP Spectre x360 - 999.99, this would max out my budget, 13in, 8th gen i5 processor, 8.0gb mem, 360 SSD, standard graphics card.

    3. Dell XPS 13 - If this is your recommendation, would you give you opinion on either the 8th gen i5 with 4gb mem for $999.99 vs 7th gen i5 with 8gb mem for $949.99.

    Thanks everyone

what's the best laptop out there for a comp sci student?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 11:09 AM PDT

id like something fast ( i dont intend to play games on it ), big screen, nice design and high resolution screen ( similar to those on a macbook )

i ve thought about the macbook but its quite expensive

basically, i would use it to code stuff while at the library or outside. so it needs to fit well on my laps... which mean i dont want laptop/tablet hybrid

my budget would be 1000 euros, maybe more but then it would need to really be worth it

    thanks!

    XPS 13" Overkill?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 07:21 AM PDT

I'm a student looking to buy a Laptop for my final 2 years of Uni. With also functionality in light photo and video editing, streaming and it regularly being attached to multiple monitors. Think I think I need light ultrabook travel with enough power to never feel limited on create tasks or bulk multitasking. Currently I'm leaning towards to new XPS 13 9370 i7 16g 520gb (basically spec'd out) but not sure if that'll be overkill or not? For a regular computer user, I know very little about necessary specs for different tasks and requirements.. Any advice?

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $1500 - $2500 AUD (Australia)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specifications

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    7/10

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Possible Adobe Suite (Photoshop etc)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Student looking for recommendations

    Posted: 18 Mar 2018 11:37 PM PDT

I start a Computer Systems Technician course in May. The program recommends a laptop with these specs: -Current i5 Processor or greater that must support 64bit virtualization ** -16GB of RAM minimum ** -1TB Harddrive ** Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 ** Wireless 802.11AC with 5GZ support recommended ** Wired Ethernet port 10/100/1000 ** Wired network jack required USB 3.0 ** For a better experience we recommend (optional): 2 year warranty 2 hours of battery life -i7 processor

I was hoping somebody could recommend some laptops, even some brands to look for. Maybe anyone in that particular work field could help me out too.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: No budget- Ideally from Best Buy since I have 400$ in Best Buy gift cards. Canada, Ottawa

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor doesn't matter that much to me. Battery life would be ideal for sure, I do need minimum specifications of I7 processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB Hardrive

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I do want a more professional look to the laptop. I want to stay away from the gamer looking laptops.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A - easy to use every day and carry in a backpack on the bus.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. School is the primary use of this laptop. They recommend a laptop with the specification I listed above. This is a Computer Systems Technician program.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A - Laptop is for school

Bought 2 Gaming Laptops and Don't Know Which to Keep! Please help

    Posted: 18 Mar 2018 07:04 PM PDT

Hey everyone; so two new laptops came up for great prices so I bought both and am planning to return one. Was very time sensitive.

Here are the two I bought: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/predator-model/NH.Q1AEK.001 £1000

I then saw https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/predator-model/NH.Q29EK.002 for £915 and also in your advice, would you change your mind if this was £750?

    (Full specs above)

Here is a breakdown which I have put together; please can you give me some advice?

    Predator 17 G9-793 vs Predator Helios 300

RGB Keyboard, Macro Keys, better design, 'coolblast' insert VS none of this

    Gen 6 VS Gen 7 i7 CPU

    Both GTX 1060 6GB vram

    128 vs 256GB SSD

    Both 1TB HDD

    16GB RAM 4 slots vs 16GB RAM 2 slots

    4.2KG vs 3KG

    Same screen size

Gsync display 1080p ips vs no gsync 1080p ips

4 speakers plus 2 subwoofer vs 2 speakers

    5 USB vs 4 USB

    8 cell 6000MAH vs 4 cell 3220 MAH

No 'aero' fans vs having 'aero' fans

More on the spec pages; thank you so so much in advance for your advice!

Comparing Different Dell XPS 15 to buy, $1150 model versus $1600 model

    Posted: 18 Mar 2018 10:40 PM PDT

Hey, I'm considering between two different Dell XPS models:

The $999 model, upgraded with the 4GB GTX 1050, and i5 interl processors, bumping the price up to $1150

    link

Currently with coupons that would make it $999 dollars with the upgrades.

    And the $1600 model:

    link

Which I have coupons that would make it around $1400.

I was wondering which is the better one to go with. So far the only think I really noticed is the more expensive model has 16gb ram, i7 processor instead of i5, 97WHr battery instead of 56WHr, and a 512GB PCIe Solid State Drive instead of the 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive + 32GB Solid State Drive of the cheaper model. I'm not sure this is worth the extra $400. Will the ram and improved processors make a notable difference and is it worth $400? Additionally are there just better laptops for a similar price out there?

Though I'm still in university, and will start working soon and will probably have a bunch of excess spending money then, so I don't think I'll mind once I start working the extra cost if it will give me notably better performance.

I mainly use my computer over my phone, so I prefer that it be relatively lightweight and durable. I game a bunch, but mainly games like Dota 2, and not AAA games with 3d enviroments very often anymore, though I wouldn't mind being able to run one with ok graphics if I felt the need. I use photoshop a ton and work on some pretty big projects there. Additionally I'm a computer science graduate student (more on the theory side so you'll have to forgive me for asking for hardware advice) and so run alot of simulations, deep learning programs, and other things that I'm happy to be able to utilize a graphics card to do.

I will note in the past I've bought high spec, but bargain gaming laptops, but they have always crapped out after a year or 2 and I've found it really frustrating, so I'm trying to go with something a little more standard and well reviewed to make sure it survives longer and doesn't have some of the annoying features of my last few computers.

Help me choose between the Acer Aspire e15, the Dell Inspiron 15 5000, and the Dell Inspiron 17 5000, all priced at $599

    Posted: 18 Mar 2018 06:38 PM PDT

    Acer Aspire e15 for $599

    RAM: 8gb DDR SDRAM (?)

Chip: Intel i5-8250u chip at 3.4 ghz

    Graphics: NVidia MX150 w/ 2gb RAM

    Hard Drive: 256 gb SSD

    15.6" display

    Dell Inspiron 15 5000 for $599

    RAM: 8gb DDR4 RAM

Chip: Intel i5-7300HQ chip at 2.5 ghz

    Graphics: GTX1050 w/ 4gb RAM

    Hard Drive: 256 gb SSD

    15.6" display

    Dell Inspiron 17 5000 at $599

    RAM: 8gb DDR4 RAM

Chip: Intel i5-8250u chip at 1.6 ghz

    Graphics: Integrated 620

Hard Drive: 1 TB 5400rpm SATA hd (?)

    17.3" display

This is a work computer for presentations, writing, streaming videos, light gaming, etc. I want something that will age well and has a large screen. I'm not worried about weight or battery life beyond a few hours. What would you recommend (and why!)?

    7700HQ reaching 100C

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 02:01 AM PDT

    Hi,

The 7700HQ often peaks at 100C. This happens mostly during gaming or exporting videos, the usual heavy stuff. As Intel mentions 100C as the thermal limit of the 7700HQ I got worried and sent the laptop in for repairs. My notebook has been back to the manufacturer twice now, they replaced the thermal paste and even the whole main board. The 100C peaks are still occurring, with the fans going haywire. Now the manufacturer acts like this is not a problem and they won't look into it again.

Am I simply too worried about these temps, or is something actually the matter here?

    Upgrading CQ61 [help/advice{

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 01:54 AM PDT

I got stung on eBay. I bought a laptop for my kids, just for their online math homework, it was advertised working but with no hard drive. I didn't pay a lot and I had a 250gb hdd at home and a copy of Vista 64 so I figured it was a low cost fix.

It arrives, I put in the HDD and it won't boot. It's flashing the LED's above caps lock and I think delete, 4 times. Go to a forum and it said 4 flashes was a memory issue so I pull the ram, swap it round, put in one stick at a time and double check that i fitted the hdd correctly and then I found on the HP site 4 flashes was a graphics card.

So I figure I'll fix it the best I can on a low budget and I'll use it for myself and find the kids another one. I've found a replacement motherboard on aliexpress for about $40 which I think is fair, I don't mind spending that, but I figure I may as well upgrade the CPU as well.

I found a brilliant website with a list of all the CPU's that fit the motherboard but I cannot find it now for the life of me. That site said I could use any of the CPU's listed but it went right up to an i7 I think, which seemed crazy when it said mine would have a i3 320 I think it was.

I planned to a i3 390 as it outperformed some of the i5 chips and it's only about $20 where most i5's I find are about double that.

So, I don't mind using second hand parts, and I have a budget of no more than $100. I like the laptop and have a use for it, so now I have it I may as well make it go.

    577997-001 Motherboard for HP G61 Compaq Presario CQ61 DAOOP6MB6D0

Is the mobo I will use. Can anyone tell me the fastest CPU that I can fit onto the board for the best value for money?

While I have it down, are there any other parts I can swap out for faster performance, or is there anything that is wise to replace? It has 2 2gb of Samsung ram, which I assume is the maximum. I'm also looking for a cheap SSHD to replace the 250gb, I don't need big volume storage.

Last, yes, I know I could get another laptop, but I am looking forward to working with computers again, and I guess my goal is to build a better machine for what I could buy at the moment for the same price. It's not going to be working hard. Reddit, eBay, YouTube is pretty much it.

How serious is it if I am hitting 100 c while gaming on my laptop?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2018 08:47 PM PDT

I have my Omen lifted off the surface but it's still reaching 100c.

I have had no error messages or shutdowns as of yet. Only time I reach max temps is playing AAA titles.

I am being a little cheap and do not want to buy a cooling pad but will I destroy my laptop if I continue doing this?
