Posted: 04 Dec 2021 05:21 PM PST I've been just doing sudo nautilus from a terminal window, then closing it when I'm done, but I feel like maybe opening such a powerful file manager as root is maybe not wise. Should I install a different, more focused file manager for running as root when I need to, keep nautilus for regular user stuff? Am I overthinking it? Fedora 34 on my laptop. On the stability of Arch Linux Posted: 04 Dec 2021 04:57 PM PST New linux user here, Since windows 11 has come and windows 10 losing its support in the next 3 years or so, this was the final push for me to decide switching to linux. My prior experience using linux was using mint a couple of years back. I don't plan to install Arch on a hardware system anytime soon but my plan is to eventually completely ditch windows and install arch from scratch. I have been using Oracle VM VirtualBox and have managed to do a base install of Arch several times on my on and have gone the path of using tiling window manager (dwm to be specific with st and dmenu), till now I haven't done much but tried to set up a wallpaper using xwallpaper and setup .xinitrc to run the wallpaper set command every time it runs which led me to realize it wont run without #!/bin/bash and so far I'm actually enjoying the experience but I have heard a lot of conflicting information on the stability of Arch Linux, some claim that it rarely breaks while I've also seen both memes and post about Arch being a hot mess that keeps on breaking, but with such conflicting information I honestly have become scared to dip my foot deeper and wonder if I should forgo my future plans of migrating completely to Arch on bare metal. btw I don't game at all and do a lot of coding, watch anime (I even use mpv on windows and I am absolutely loving it). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. and when I mean in a while it will probably be 1 - 2 years before I install Arch on my actual laptop (since I have only one and don't want to risk it), so till that time I will have plenty of time to mess around in a VM and try to get decent at using Arch and learning bash and all the other stuff. Scrip to change CPU governor based on battery percentage? Posted: 04 Dec 2021 05:03 PM PST Is it possible to create a script that reads battery percentage and changes the CPU governor ? Also it will be run on android with SU acess + Franco Kernel Manager, but since the options are very similar to Desktop Linux I'm guessing the kernel parameters are the same [link] [comments]
Dual-booting Windows and Fedora Posted: 04 Dec 2021 04:15 PM PST So I have a self-built machine with Fedora 35 with this:
I just bought a SAMSUNG 1TB SSD 980 to put Windows 10 on. I know they say you have to put Windows on FIRST before Linux... does it matter even if I take out my current NVME (with Fedora on it) and install Windows or do BOTH NVMES need to be installed (from scratch) one after the other? How To Change Resolution of Linux Guest (Pop OS) In KVM/QEMU Posted: 04 Dec 2021 03:21 PM PST Hey there. I've installed Virtual Machine Manager onto my installation of Ubuntu 21.10, and created a new VM of Pop OS 21.04, but I don't have the option within Pop OS to change the resolution to 2560x1440 (my native resolution). I understand that I need to use something called "spice" but I'm kinda at a loss as it seems like it is already installed? Previously I used VirtualBox and that just involved installing guest additions, I suspect I need to do the same thing, but I'm a bit stuck on how to actually do that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments]
xscreensaver keeps turning on after 20 minutes even though I chagned the time to 720 minutes. Posted: 04 Dec 2021 02:24 PM PST Basically the title, I don't want the xscreensaver to ever turn on except for when i close the lid so I tried changing the timer to 720 minutes (12 hours), yet, after only 20 minutes it turns on the screensaver. How do I fix this? It's extremely infuriating. [link] [comments]
