Conflicted between the two, would love a second opinion. Not gonna be gaming or anything particularly intensive, but i will be using this laptop for a couple years. Is there any noticeable differences in performance?

    A laptop for Data Science

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 04:21 AM PDT

I'm planning to dive into data science, but I have an outdated laptop that struggles to run chrome for me(15' base mb air), so planning to upgrade. I commute to uni everyday on my motorcycle (whenever its open, which is not often rn) so portability is quite high on the list.

I'm currently looking at the thinkpad E14 gen 3 with Ryzen 7 5700u, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd(+ an empty m.2 slot for upgrade), and a 100% srgb panel, versus a zephyrus G14 ryzen 7 5800hs, gtx 1650, 8gb ram(which I will upgrade to 16), 512 gb ssd(no extra slot), and a pantone validated panel. The thinkpad is about 80k inr, has a 12 week wait, and doesn't come with windows preinstalled, which is a bit of a hassle but no biggie for me. The zephyrus is 95k, but with the extra sodimm it'll end up at 99k.

I usually am on chrome with a lot of tabs in a lot of windows, use some illustrator, and whatever softwares I'll be learning for data science and analysis of which I don't have a whole lot of idea right now which is where I need help.

My question is: 1. Do I need a gpu for data science/analysis? Or can I use some cloud service at a reasonable rate? Sorry I'm just a beginner and still don't know much about this world 2. Does lenovo or asus have better service in India? 3. If any of you have experience with these mentioned laptops, as they are pretty popular models, which has better build and cooling systems?/ How long would they last?

Looking for a thin and light white laptop with dGPU

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 09:53 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Looking forward to hearing some laptop recommendations.

Here are some of my requirements:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
-Under $1500 USD in the USA
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
-Prefer new but refurbs acceptable if from a reliable source
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-Form factor > build quality > performance > battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-Must be under 4 lbs. Thinness ~0.7" or less.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
-13" to 15" is required. Not considering 17" laptops. 14" is probably the sweet spot for me, but I will consider 13" and 15" options.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-Will mainly need this for graduate education, travel, and some light gaming. Might need it to do some light machine learning or research work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
-Prefer it to be able to run League of Legends at 144+ fps on highest settings (should be easy to do) and Genshin Impact at 60 fps high settings. Genshin Impact at 60 fps on mid-settings is also acceptable if weight of laptop would be significantly lower.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-White laptop is a must. Semi-professional aesthetic is a must. Dedicated GPU is a must (MX series chips are not preferred). Backlit keyboard is a must, RGB is preferred but not required -- if not RGB lights, white backlit keys would be a must. At least 2 USB Type-A ports preferred. USB C port preferred. IPS panel is a must, 120 Hz+ is a must, and 1080p is a must. Webcam is highly preferred (can be as low quality as 720p@30fps).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-Aesthetics and form factor (low weight and relatively small package) are the two most important factors for me aside from having a discrete GPU. For reference, the laptop I am currently interested in is the MSI Stealth M15 (white w/ GTX 1660Ti) due to the clean aesthetic, white option, and discrete GPU. I would pull the trigger on that particular laptop, if only I didn't feel like I were getting scammed by buying an Intel machine, especially if it only has 4 cores. I plan to use this laptop as my main machine for doing everything since I will be constantly moving around from state-to-state for the next 5 years or so (so I wouldn't want to rely on a desktop machine), and I want this machine to last that entire period. I don't plan to play any crazy demanding games, but I would like it to be future-proofed enough where I could at least dip my toes into a new game release during that period.

    Thanks in advance!

Laptop of 10 years died on me finally. Looking for a cheap but decent replacement (UK, £300-700)

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 02:52 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: I could stretch to £700 but im on a tight budget so any money saved keeps me happier

Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes but I keep my laptops for a LONG time, so it needs to be built to last.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality > Performance > Form Factor > battery life

P.s. I dont really understand what form factor means but im never away from a charging cable for over 3-4 hours so don't really care about battery life, as long as I occasionally have the option to move about.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I watch a lot of TV and movies so a decent size.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I game a lot but I expect to do most of it on my pc. So if it can run a few games on medium thats cool with me. I also develop mobile apps so if it could perform well enough to run android emulators that'd be great. My old laptop always froze up when I tried.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Honestly not that important, I'd appreciate the ability to run semi-modern stuff on medium at 30+.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Gonna be coding a lot and watching movies a lot. So a decent keyboard and good screen are nice. But to reiterate, my priority is having this thing last a long time.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not sure what else to add. If you need more detail please ask. I'm not too clued up on laptops so im not sure what info to provide

Lightweight laptop for work and gaming,<£2000 UK, 14"-15.6"

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:35 AM PDT

Hello everyone, my Dell Inspiron 7537 has finally started giving out after 7 years of service. Now I am looking for a new long-serving replacement.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £2000

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes, if reliable.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance>Build quality>Form factor>Battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness is not important, however I would prefer a light laptop 2-2.5 kg at most (4.5 pounds).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14"-15.6", I am using an external monitor most of the time.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No video editing, but I am planning to do some gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Divinity Original Sin 2, Witcher 3, Elder scrolls VI (when it eventually comes out). I've become used to the lowest settings with my current laptop, so high/medium settings with constant 60 FPS sounds wonderful to me.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

HDMI support, good mic/camera for video conferences.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

For work I prefer to use a Linux OS, so I would either need enough hard drive space for a dual boot installation or it should be powerful enough to run a virtual ubuntu machine with good performance. Here's a link to something I think could work. I configured it on https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/ if anyone's interested.

    Cheers!

    Work laptop w/ light gaming

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:15 AM PDT

    Hey Guys!

I'm kind of in a pickle. I need to find me a laptop mainly for work - which is not too taxing for the hardware honestly (regular company work with extensive excels and some coding but that's it). But I'm looking for something with potentially dedicated graphics for mild off-time gaming (no need for 30xx series Nvidia). Trick is I'm a sucker for touch-screens and they really help my work during presentations and discussions.

Budget is not the main question but would be good something below 1400$, with an i7/R7 CPU and at least 16GB RAM, potentiall 14".

I've looked at Zephyrus 14" and also the ROG FLOW 13 which looks kinda bullseye.

Do you have any other suggestions maybe? :)

Laptop for college and gaming on the side, 1200$ budget in the US

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:27 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1200$ USD, US
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Only if I can trust where I'm getting the refurb, but would prefer new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life will be important because I am going into college but I will be near a power source a lot of the time, build quality is important and performance in games that I would like to play is also important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very, I don't mind a slightly bulky laptop, but the design of some Asus and MSI laptops throw me off, I like a more minimalist design. Weight really doesn't matter too much.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I would like to get into video editing and I will certainly be gaming. Premiere Pro or Davinci Resolve, and will be playing games like DOOM, Borderlands 2, Team Fortress 2, CSGO, Titanfall 2, and Minecraft. I would also like to play some higher end games that I haven't had the pc power in the past for.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mainly Minecraft, Team Fortress 2, DOOM, Borderlands 2, but I would like to be able to play some higher end games like driving sims like Apex or Fortnite or DOOM (idk if doom takes a lot of power) I enjoy playing on a 144 hz screen and would like to be above 60 fps in near any game I play. I am comfortable playing on lower settings to make the game run as smooth as possible as I have always needed to do that on other pc's I've played on, but would like games like Minecraft to play on high quality with shaders and mods. I would be lowering my settings regardless in fps games to make the game as responsive as I could for performance, having them run on high settings smoothly would be nice to experience though, I've never had the ability to.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I don't need or want touchscreen, keyboard just has to be reliable, I've used laptops where the keys break after a year and I would like it to last, build quality is important, don't want to need to switch to an external keyboard like my brother.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I like 144 hz screens a lot I don't know if my budget can fit that though. I've been looking at the Legion 5 15.6" 144 hz laptop with a 1660ti, there's one on Amazon for 1149, would that be a good option for me? Or are there others that would be better? I've heard Lenovo is pretty solid when it comes to build quality and the products lasting, but would like some more opinions before I settle for the first thing that looks good.

Laptop for Civil Engineering Company Civil3D

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 12:02 AM PDT

Hello, we are looking to get laptops for our engineers as we shift to a hybrid work schedule, they will be docking this at the office 3 days a week and at home 2 days a week. It will be used for AutoCAD 2D and AutoCAD Civil3D mostly, as well as Office (Excel, Word), PDF, and video consumption.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $2000-2500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and build quality. They will be docked or connected to monitor and external keyboard and mouse, so battery and form factor are not as important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not a lot.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
AutoCAD Civil3D, Adobe Professional, Microsoft Excel, Google Earth, photo editing and maybe some video editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good amount of ports, good thermals and not too loud fan.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
We want machines that are going to be good for long-term. I would rather spend and have them last 4-5 years, vs run into thermal issues, crashing, not handling software, etc.

To splurge or not to splurge?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:43 PM PDT

So I know this question probably comes up a lot, but I'd just be curious to see what everyone has to say regarding laptops for starting a math major at university. I'm starting university in the fall and I'll need to choose some kind of computer for when I get there (my current laptop is far from suitable for a student's daily driver), and I'm wondering if there's anything that would be better than anything else for this application/program of study (i.e. specific programs that need to be run or things like that).

I'm also debating whether I go whole-hog and splurge on a really premium laptop, or whether I get something more budget and replace this piece of junk I find myself typing on with a desktop later down the road.

    Any help is seriously appreciated!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$2000 USD - my wife would prefer $1500.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?performance > build quality > form factor > battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?I know I'm overweight and not thin, but it's not that important. For me, or for the computer.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Music production (Ableton), some video editing
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Gaming would be a bonus, not a deciding factor
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Heavily leaning towards 32GB RAM for future-proofing; curious about the benefits of Thunderbolt ports as it applies to audio production (interfacing, etc.). Must have some ability to connect to ethernet, either via a native port or an adapter.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.Would like a keyboard that is relatively normal, meaning no odd-sized or oddly placed Shift buttons. Too old for that stuff. Have been referred by some I trust to look into Asus/HP; warned against Acer (also had multiple issues with Acer from a prior work experience where hundreds of them failed. Spectacularly).

JPY 100,000 (USD 1k) Laptop advice pls

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:38 PM PDT

Really appreciate the help and advice on offer in this community - it's the best of Reddit that you guys offer this service.

I'm so overwhelmed no idea which laptop to buy so really appreciated.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around JPY 100,000 maybe stretch to ¥125,000

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Nope, must be new

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Keen on something that is good quality and looks good. Battery life not so important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not that important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15 inches plus

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Citrix Remote Desktop access is by far my most frequently used item so the more seamless this works the better.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      No gaming required

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is necessary; separate mouse a plus

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      None.

What specs are best for editing 4k/60fps or hour long videos at 1080p/60fps resolution?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 10:27 PM PDT

I usually edit 4k/60fps (200mbps) videos, sometimes 40 mins long 1080p/60fps (100mbps). Currently have an intel i7 10th gen 4 core 8 thread, GeForce RTX 250, 32GB RAM, 2TB M.2 SSD laptop and its fricking terrible at editing and constantly crashes. I wanna buy a new laptop but want the best value for my money that will get the job done. If the cheapest one will work without giving me problems, I would prefer it as I dont plan on making 8k videos. Which is the best value?

    MSI Creator 15 ($1,999) on sale for ($1,799) FHD 60Hz 512GB M.2 SSD + Open M.2 Slot 16GB 2666 MHz RAM 10th Gen i7-10875H 8 Core (2.3GHz / 5.1GHz) GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q (8GB GDDR6 VRAM)

Legion 5 Pro, Acer Nitro 5, Asus ROG Strix G15, or Gigabyte Aorus 15G?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 10:21 PM PDT

Here is what I'll be using the laptop for:

-School Google Stuff (i.e., docs, slides, classroom, sheets, etc...)

-Adobe photoshop (and possibly some other adobe video editing softwares)

-Python programming (I'm a beginner so I won't need any crazy editors, engines, or data analytics engines that demand extremely high resources)

-Streaming softwares (I use twitch studio and/or OBS (still deciding)) (no face cam though)

-Gaming (roblox, valorant, online .io games (i.e., shellshockers.io and krunker.io, modern warfare, GTA, etc...))

I'm kind of getting set on the Legion 5 pro as it comes at such a great price with absolutely phenomenal specs. It's the only laptop with a 3070 at a reasonable price on this list. It also has a great 165 Hz, 16 inch, quad HD IPS Display panel, which is great. Here are the specs I'm thinking of getting for the legion 5 pro (AMD 2021) (recommendations welcome):

    • Processor : AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800H Processor (3.20GHz, Max Boost up to 4.40GHz, 8 Cores, 16 Threads, 16MB Cache)
    • Operating System : Windows 10 Home 64
    • Operating System Language : Windows 10 Home 64 Traditional Chinese/Simplified Chinese/English
    • Microsoft Productivity Software : Microsoft Office Trial
    • Memory : 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3200MHz SoDIMM
    • Second Solid State Drive : 512 GB SSD, M.2 2280, PCIe Gen3 NVMe, TLC
    • Display : 16" WQXGA (2560 x 1600), IPS, AntiGlare, 500nits, Non-Touch, 165Hz, Narrow Bezel, 100%sRGB, HDR400
    • Graphic Card : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6 256bits
    • Camera : 720P HD 2.8mm Camera No Microphone
    • Microphone : Array Microphone
    • Colour : Storm Grey
    • Keyboard : Backlit 4 Zone RGB Keyboard Black English
    • Wireless : Wi-Fi 6 2x2 AX, Bluetooth Version 5.0 or above
    • Surface Treatment : Anodising
    • Palmrest : PC/ABS
    • Battery : 4 Cell Li-Polymer Internal Battery, 80Wh
    • Power Cord : 300W AC Adapter Slim (3pin)-UK
    • Language Pack : Publication - Traditional Chinese/Simplified Chinese/English
    • Warranty : 1 Year Carry-in
    • 3-YR On-site upgrade from 1-YR Depot/CCI delivery

    Total: 2383 SGD (student pricing)

    Weight: 2.44 Kg

However this laptop is quite heavy, and just to consider other laptops, I looked at 3 other ones.

The acer nitro 5 is a great priced laptop that is also heavy, but with great specs.

    • AMD Ryzen™7 5800H 8-core processor(up to 4 MB L2 cache, up to 16 MB L3 cache, 3.2 GHz with Precision Boost up to 4.4 GHz)
    • NVIDIA® GeForce RTX 3060 6GB GDDR6
    • 32GB DDR4 RAM 3200MHz
    • 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD (2x M.2 slots + 2.5″ bay)
    • 15.6" 144Hz Slim Bezel FHD IPS Display optional RGB backlit keyboard–4 zones,NumPad,2x stereo speakers,HD webcam
    • Intel®️ Wireless Wi-Fi 6 AX200 802.11a/b/g/n/acR2+ax wireless LAN
    • 2 Years Carry-in local Singapore Warranty By Acer

    Total: 2298 SGD (Lazada)

It has great specs, but an intel wifi card and "only" a 3060 (still great but the former has a 3070), with a slightly lower refresh rate and smaller screen. It does have 32 gb RAM to be future proofed, and 1 TB SSD (also future proof). Judging by the stuff I'm going to be doing on the laptop, I don't think I'll need that much RAM, right? Or should I opt for a laptop with 32 gb ram (configurable on legion 5 pro)? Also I only need 512 gb SSD (I only used 96 GB on my 256 GB SSD MBA 2017 after 3 years of school and games (but no actual games–only roblox). So I don't really need 1 TB storage.

The Asus ROG Strix G15 is also a great laptop and I also like Asus products quite a bit for their good build quality and design. Here are the specs I'm thinking of getting for this laptop:

    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
    • OS: Windows 10 Home (64-bit)
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU with 6GB DDR6
    • Screen: FHD 144hz
    • RAM: 16GB DDR4 RAM
    • Storage: 1TB SSD
    • Warranty: 2 YEARS INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY

    Total: 2498 (Lazada)

    Weight: 2.3kg

This laptop doesn't have a webcam and that could potentially be a deal breaker as it's also a school laptop (tbh though, not sure if I'll need it though since I have a webcam on my mac, should I need it for potential future online classes). It also has 3060, with 144 Hz refresh rate, but it's slightly lighter than the 2 other laptops I just mentioned. There is also a free upgrade to 32 GB RAM for some reason, so I'll definitely do that for future proofing. I'm not sure if this one is worth considering, unless it's got a really cool feature(s) you know that other laptops don't have.

The final laptop I am currently considering is the Gigabyte Aorus 15G. Here are the specs I'm thinking of getting:

    Processor: i7-10870H

    OS: Windows 10 Home

    Graphics: NVIDIA RTX 3060 GDDR6 6GB

    Screen: 15.6" FHD 240Hz IPS-Level

    RAM: 16GB DDR4

    Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD

Warranty: 2 YEARS WARRANTY BY GIGABYTE

    Total: 2499 SGD

    Weight: 2.2Kg

This laptop is the lightest, but also the most expensive (well by 1 SGD lol (to the strix)). It has great peripherals and even though it's FHD, I've been looking at that 240 Hz refresh rate–I do some competitive gaming and streaming so will 165 Hz on the legion 5 pro be enough? Or will it be a bottleneck and I should opt for 240 Hz refresh rate? It has a 'nose cam' but at least it has a webcam. Also a bit worried about the intel CPU, as I like AMD way more, but a lot of people told me that this CPU will be great too, what do you think?

I don't really know about this one as it's the most expensive on this list (my budget is 2600 SGD though), and unless it's really good in some aspects (if you have one please tell me about it), I'm not sure...
