I found dell latitudes that are referbished with an 7th gen i7, 265gb ssd and 16gb of ram. I think Im favoring them because so many people have them for sale upgraded to better specs. there's also some older model with even better hardware.

I'm worried an i5 wont be powerful enough because I will using ableton with lots a plugins so im pretty set on an i7 6th to 8th gen. I have around 500-600 dollars to spend because I need to buy an interface and I have a novation mk2 on the way.

The most important thing I want is a cpu that will never crash when running multiple plugins, Mid size high def screen 1440p would be a plus. and a good size ssd. I can always upgrade the ram cheap and ssd if i have to and i know there's some laptops that can hold an extra hdd. That would be nice but I can always use a portable hdd to store files.

If there's a payment plan site then I could get something around 900. I have to get a laptop before I can do anything and only really know amazon and ebay to shop from for upgraded laptops considered refurbished. Thank if you read and want to help.

    • 5 hour battery at least (need to bring it to school) & best specifications for the money.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • N/A.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 14" at least.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Programming for school / Play newer high end games like GTA 5, Witcher 3, CS:GO, BF5.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

[1000€ PL] General purpose lightweight 13.3" or 14" laptop.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:37 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000€ (including tax) - Poland

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 doesn't matter really. I'd love to have as much battery life as possible so I wouldn't have to carry around charger while attending classes or during a train ride for 3-4 hours.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. Although, weight is more important than thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 14 inch if that's possible.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming at all, I got a PC for that. I'll be doing some CAD (AutoCAD and Revit, SOFiSTiK) for next 2 years as well as a bit of programming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Additional: I'd like as simple design as possible. Numpad is a huge addition, especially in small display sizes. Keyboard is also very important.

I was thinking of getting the new Microsoft Surface Laptop 3. It looks very plain and simple, though I think it might be a bit over budget and there might be something better for lower price. I don't neccesarly need an overkill, since I'll be using it only 2 times a week on average as I work on my PC regularly.

I'm highly grateful for any advice.

Looking for the perfect 13 inch buy.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:47 PM PST

Hey everyone! So I recently made a post on this sub - and the quality of answers have been really great! A big thank you to everyone who replied. However - I haven't been able to make a buying decision based on that.

I've searched different platforms but there doesn't exist a perfect combination - which is no surprise, but a disappointment still.

I wish to find a laptop that balances out on everything - but given I'm willing to pour thousands of dollars on something - it better be worth it. Here are some things I'm looking for in a laptop:

i7 or i9 processor, NVMe M.2 SSD, DDR4 or DDR5 RAM (highest end of frequency), dedicated graphics (not too big on that), must be 13 inches, lightweight, metallic, and a decent battery capacity (figured with i7 or i9 should be more than the standard ones).

Is there any laptop out there which comes with this combination? Money is not a problem.

I understand people in this community give their time to answer questions to help other people - so a big thank you there.

Need an all-around good light laptop with an dedicated GPU

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:20 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800€ , in Germany (Could go +50 depends)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications to your requirements for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money and light. 1080 display is mandatory, 15.6 inches in size. No i3, at least i5 with 4 cores or ryzen 3500u which seems to be pretty on pair with the i5 8250u. GPU is a must, the AMD vega GPUs seem to not be that great so an MX gpu at least. SSD should also be included.
    • How important is weight to you? Pretty important, my current laptop weighs 2.2kg and I want a lighter one.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Linux, Mac. Win10
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 inch screen
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If you have no requirements, put N/A. Solidworks, NX Siemens, CATIA, Premier PRO, Photoshop
    • If you're gaming (leave blank if you put N/A above...), do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? HOI4, GTA 5, BF4, csgo // but fps is not so important it should run decent on low or medium settings because I dont play very often.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable business grade build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlight would be nice but not necessary.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So my current laptop is an Acer Aspire 51G with i5 8250u and MX150. I feel it is too bulky and the screen quality is bad.Ive done some research on my price range and the 2 laptops that I found to be good are the SWIFT 3 also with i5 and mx gpu and Asus Vivobook with same specs. Out of those 2 I would preffer the Vivobook because of the better screen color accuracy and design. If there is anything better on that price range that is light and has a dedicated GPU let me know.

    Switch from Mac to PC

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:47 PM PST

Please don't get mad if I did any of this wrong. I filled out the survey thing, it's toward the bottom.

I have a 2013 MacBook that I'm pretty sure is on its way out. I need to be as frugal as possible, and I'm pretty sure that means replacing it with a different brand... yes? Probably? I've been using Mac since around 2008, and am extremely overwhelmed trying to narrow down PC brands, models, etc.

I want to run Lightroom and Photoshop and have room for lots of large photo and video files. I also use iMovie for our family videos, and I'm unaware what other options exist. (Or can you get it for a PC??) Other than that, I use Mail, Calendar, Notes, occasionally Pages (actually prefer Word),etc. Nothing big aside from the photography stuff.

I do not understand anything technical, and I feel like I'll get screwed into buying something crazy, cause I don't know what I actually need. I just want something simple that can store a bunch of big files and the aforementioned programs without being slow and on the verge of bursting into flame.

Total budget and country of purchase:

USA; Is $1500 reasonable? I need to go as "cheap" as possible, but I will wait and save longer for what will do the job the best.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I don't even know what a 2 in 1 form factor means. Good battery life sounds nice, sure. Specifications allude me. Lots of memory? Something called RAM?

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that I'm hoping for bulky, but I don't want a laptop that will shatter if I breathe on it.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Use Mac currently, but am assuming I cant afford it this time around. I last used Windows when XP was a thing. Never used the other two. So... Windows?

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I think right now mine is a 13". A little small for retouching photos, but doable if it makes a big price difference. Definitely no smaller though, if that even exists.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I don't know what CAD is. I use Lightroom and Photoshop daily. No gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

     N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Anything that benefits photography would be great. I honestly just don't know what's out there to mention anything specific. A good, accurate screen is obviously needed.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I feel I have babbled enough, thank you.

In need of the cheapest laptop possible for digital art (Clip Studio)

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 02:10 AM PST

I honestly don't care about anything else other than the fact that it could run Clip Studio at a decent pace. A little lag won't kill anyone if that's the case.

I just need it to be cheap and usable. The only apps I'd probably have on it are Clip Studio and Chrome, since I'm just going to use this while I'm in another country.

    Thank you!

    Quite, since I'm travelling.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux

    windows

Looking to get a new laptop since graduating from college

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:19 PM PST

Currently have a dell inspiron 3521. Any help would be appreciated. I'm sick of games that shouldn't kill my computer causing it to crash or freeze. I don't know anything about optimizing start up speeds, loading speeds, specs, etc. all I know is that I plan on devolving and gaming from the new device

Total budget and country of purchase:** ~$800-$1000 U.S.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good batter life as well as well as high processing power would be preferred. My current laptop is soooooo slow to run programs as well as rendering games, etc., and it's awful.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -lighter if possible, but not a deal breaker

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm familiar with windows. Just started using Ubuntu at work. Would prefer windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger is nicer, but I'd prefer HD for quality graphics when gaming.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using this for personal projects using python such as game development and app development. I will spend a large amount of time gaming as well. I'd like to be able to play some games in VR, but I primarily play rouge-lites, and RPGs. I'd love to be able to play Skyrim or Destiny 2 without any lag or crashes or freezes. I'd also prefer a webcam as I often use programs like Skype to communicate with my friends to play role playing games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As above, I mostly play rouge-lites and likes as well as RPG games. I'd love to be able to run VR games. I love Minecraft. I'd love to be able to use a super shaders mod if that falls in the specs. Fps to be above 30. 60 FPS would be AMAZING, but I feel like it's out of my budget.

Cyber Security Student Needing Replacement Laptop

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:43 PM PST

Hey, I'm looking for a replacement for my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga S1 that recently died. It served my purposes really well, but after six years, it's given up. I'm a cyber security student that only has one semester left, so I'm looking for something that will work for my schoolwork (often requires VM use) and also any projects I take on outside of school (e.g. CTFs, programming, etc). I also use my computer to watch Netflix, browse, and play low-requirement games (not looking for a gaming laptop). I've seen a lot of recommendations for various machines (Dell Latitude 5490 looks good but I heard it gets really hot).

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, up to 1000, but aiming for less than 800
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and portability are the biggest factors, but I need decent specs that enable me to run a couple VMs and basic cyber security software
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? 5 pounds or less preferred (flexible)
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferred
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 13", but small enough that it's travel-able (less that 16" probably).
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No specific software that is resource intensive, but I use various network and other security software and virtual machines.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A decent keyboard is important, but it doesn't need to be amazing. I'd like a reliable build so that what I get has a chance to stand up to travel. Some form of an HDMI port is preferred for presentations.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't need anything super powerful, just powerful enough to handle the experimentation of a cyber security student.

Summary: I am a cyber security student that needs a laptop that can handle virtual machines and basic security software. I also watch videos and play low-requirement games in my free time. Requirements:

    • Good battery (6+ hours is ideal)
    • Portable (can travel and can sit in a lap)
    • Decently Durable
    • USB ports
    • Presentation port (e.g. HDMI)
    • 13"-16" screen
    • 8GB RAM
    • 256GB storage

Budget: prefer up to 800, stretch to 1000

    Looking for Laptop Under $1,300

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:59 PM PST

    Budget: $1300 (AUD)

I don't mind if it is a 2 in 1, however, it needs to best specifications for the money, preferable screen size is 13-14 inches. The laptop must not be heavy or too large because it will be carried around all day. Windows operating system is a must. A graphics/video card is also recommended because there will be some gaming and editing on this device. I would like to have high build quality ( from a reputable brand) and an SSD.

    - Thank you, guys!

Laptop for gaming and video editing. (appreciate any help)

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:27 PM PST

Hi if anyone can give me some advice on what laptop to purchase I would appreciate it.

Total budget and country of purchase:

    700 dollars USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I put priority on power but if possible something with decent battery life would be great

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    It really doesn't matter

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

15 inches would be preferred but I'm open to larger screen sizes.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I'll be gaming, and some video editing. Would be nice if the laptop had an sd card but I wouldn't consider it a requirement

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I have no specific games in mind right now

So right now I am contemplating between two laptops right now. Lenovo IdeaPad L340 at 700 dollars which has a gtx1650, I5-9300h and 512gb nvme sdd storage. While the Asus TUF FX505DT at 650 dollars which has a gtx 1650, ryzen 3550h and 256gb ssd storage.

Only the ideapad has more storage, a usb-c port and a faster cpu. while the Asus TUF is apparently more durable (MIL-STD-810 rating) and has a more power efficient cpu. I'm not sure on the battery life for either on general use but it it would help with my decision if I knew. Also any other laptop suggestion would be nice

Laptop for School and ML Work

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:10 PM PST

Hello, hope you're all doing well, and thanks a ton in advance for any advice! I'm a physics student aboutto finish a Bachelor's and start either a Master's or a job (we'll see). Here goes(on mobile, so I'm doing my best but mistakes are very possible):

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada, $1400-2100 (or less of course, but in that case: how many more wishes do I get?)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.: Out of the 3, 2-in-1 would be great for note taking and takes first priority. Battery that lasts over 2 hours while just coding would be minimum requirement.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?: About 5/10 importance. My current laptop (2015 hp pavillion) is about 3.6lbs and I was finding that pretty heavy/inconvenient, but maybe that's because it's plastic and flimsy. Performance capabilities and 2-in-1 feature take priority over this, but lighter would be nice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.: Whatever I can dual boot Ubuntu and potentially other Linux distros onto. This would factor in if you have any 2-in-1 laptops that work really well with Linux that come to mind. (Sadly, System 76 has none)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.: Preferably smaller than 17".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.: Going to do general programming and machine learning work. Currently working with convolutional and recursive neural networks, but there's a good chance I learn to use generative adversarial networks and U-nets. In terms of hardware that would mean that a GPU would be helpful, particularly I use Pytorch, which works well with CUDA cores. I currently have access to a supercomputer, so I do most of my big bulk work on that, but I like being able to quickly generate, test, and play with mock datasets or network architectures locally. If you have an option that is slightly out of my price range, but has a GPU, then throw it out there, I may be able to convince my supervisor to help me out more financially.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?: Probably not going to game. If I do then very casually. In any case gaming is not a primary concern.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?: I have an external monitor that I'm currently using with a full size hdmi port. Would really really like a laptop that supports that. Preferably with it's own hdmi, or even micro-hdmi port. I hear there are usb-c ports that support visual output so if you say there's an easy way to go from that to hdmi then I'm all ears.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.: Minimum 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM (8GB if you think that could work well... currently running on 4GB so anything is an improvement).

I know it's kind of a slight oxymoron asking for a 2-in-1/compact/light laptop WITH a GPU, but I figured I'd ask, just in case, to see what a community of better-informed-than-me people might come up with. I'm currently looking at the Lenovo Yoga 730 15.6" with GTX 1050, or the HP Spectre 15" with MX150, or the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 with MX250. I know the Spectre is inferior in terms of specs but... damn does it look good.

Thanks again for getting through all that! Looking forward to seeing what pops up :) hopefully this is a reasonable set of specifications. Don't hesitate to ask for any more info or clarifications.

EDIT4: I travel around my city a good amount too, so if you have ideas for somehow having a small laptop that I can easily carry around that I can hook up to and external GPU when I get home, then I'm open to that too. It just looked like an expensive option when I looked into it briefly. (Also upped the budget a bit and added colons)

EDIT: I knew the stars needed a space forthe bold font...

EDIT2: Maybe no spaces and new lines make the formatting happy?

EDIT3: As with much of my coding experience, the answer was to try multiple tiny variations until it works when all along looking at the available info and thinking a little bit would have allowed me to do it right in the first place.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:46 PM PST

Hi guys, I filled out the form and really hope you guys can help!

Total budget and country of purchase: around $2000 Canadian dollars, Canada

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are my main concern but battery life may also be a factor... (Then again everywhere has charing stations nowadays)

How important is weight and thinness to you? N/A

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows would be nice but I don't mind Mac.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maya, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, Photoshop, Illustrator.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't really care, as long as it can handle my 3D software. Maybe a screen that glare won't be super obnoxious on, but that's me being picky lol.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hi guys, I'm a 3D artist living in a Canada on a visa. I work in 3D design (CAD, Maya, VFX etc). I mostly work from home and have a beast of a PC, but it would be nice to get out of the house once in a while to explore and work on the go.

    Thanks!

I can't find any 13 inch laptops with H series (preferably i7 or i9) processor. Does this combination not exist?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:11 AM PST

I have no budget. I'm looking for a 13 inch laptop with H series processor. I've searched it on every platform I know but couldn't find anything that matches my search preferences. Am I missing something, or does there not exist the combination I'm searching for?

    Thanks in advance :)

Laptop for FL Studio, college , US, Budget: $400-600

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:20 PM PST

I am going to be entering as a freshman in college, pursuing a music degree and I am currently using an HP Omen. Little complaints but it doesn't really fit my needs.

Budget: ~$400-600, not looking to pay retail or buy new, eBay's probably my best bet or even Craigslist or something.

I'm looking for a laptop that can:

    - Run FL Studio without issues/pauses/lag

    - Perform general school/business tasks (Microsoft office/alternatives,email)

    - Be transported easily, my Omen is very heavy in my bag and I would like something lighter and thinner.

And a laptop with an illuminated keyboard is a big plus.

I considered a MacBook Air (2017,2019 models) but they're pretty overpriced for offering basics things. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

    Laptop buying help please

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:27 PM PST

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I need your help! (Form further down)

While my previous desktops have lasted forever (I nicknamed one grandad as he just kept going!) I've not had much luck with laptops - all the ones I've had in the past have slowed/died within a year.

I'll be using my laptop mainly for general everyday use - internet, MS office, streaming/video media.

I'm most familiar with Windows but having an iPhone am also interested in how the apple platform performs. I would like the laptop to be good value for money, lasting longer than the epic fails I've had in the past!

All suggestions/advice welcome. Many thanks :)

    TL;DR blurb: form below

Total budget and country of purchase:

    UK, no specific budget.

*Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? *

Decent specs, good value for money, won't die within a year!

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not particularly important will be used around the house.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux

Most familiar with windows but open to other OS.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

I can attach a monitor if I need a larger screen so no preference here.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run

Will be for general everyday home use and possibly working from home.

    Laptop for programming in Linux

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:11 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I recently started studying IT and need a Laptop that runs Linux and can compile simple code.

I purchased the Lenovo Yoga C740 (~1000€), but it had issues, so i had to return it. While waiting for the company to respond i had time to rethink my decision. At first I thought having touch and pen input might be good for note taking in University, but I probably would have never used it. I spent so much money one a Laptop because I thought all the little Features were necessary when the really weren't.

I am probably overcompensating, but i thought about getting a Acer Swift 1 (~350€). The 4gb ram and a Pentium N5000 are nothing to write home about, but its small, light, good build quality, has huge battery life and it should get the job done.

    The Question is should I:

    (a) spent the minimum amount on a dedicated Linux machine that cant really do anything other than really basic tasks and have to possibility to upgrade or buy a windows laptop if I need it.

    (b) buy something more expensive and versatile, that might last me a longer time. (maybe even dual boot Windows).

I like the idea of having separate Systems, but i don't know if that's the better option.

So if you were in my shoes - had a budget of up to 1000€ - what would you do, and what laptop would you get? Also do you think the Acer is too low spec?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: up to 1000€, but for a dedicated Linux not more than 700€
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. It would be nice if i can get trough the day without recharging.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important since i'll have to carry it to Uni everyday.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux but i might dualboot Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. for me 14" is a good mix between being portable and usable. I am flexible though.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I only "need" to compile code, but it would be nice to run programs like Photoshop or Abelton.
