This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

With the disappointing 4-9% increase with the SUPER, should I just get a 2080?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 08:54 AM PDT

The card I want aesthetically is the Gigabyte 2080 WHITE but I thought i'd wait for the 2080 SUPER reviews before purchasing.

I've seen that reviews from today are 4-9% more speed, however the price difference for the UK is 14%...

Given that, should I just go for the RTX 2080 and save the extra £100/put it towards more RAM/storage?

Is there any other advantages to the SUPER other than the 4-9%?

Looking for some advice on a new build for my Dad, interested in gaming and some video editing

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 02:33 PM PDT

I've been putting together a build for my Dad after he asked for my assistance, but it's been a while since I looked into custom builds and could use some help.

    Intended use:

The uses beyond everyday word processing are: gaming at 1080p (I was surprised to hear that he's racked up >1000 hours of Elite Dangerous), and the occasional bit of mild video editing.

    Budget:

    He gave me a ballpark budget of £600 - £700 ($750 - $870) with a hard cutoff of around £750 ($930)

    Country:

All parts will be bought in the UK with no real desired vendor.

    Draft build:

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor £209.99 @ AWD-IT
CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler £25.97 @ Amazon UK
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-H110-D3A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard £32.55 @ Amazon UK
    Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory £33.20 @ Amazon UK

Power Supply Corsair CXM (2015) 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply £52.94 @ Box Limited

    Total £737.06
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-07-23 22:17 BST+0100

    Additional details:

With this current build the only thing 'set in stone' is the GTX 1660Ti (mostly because I've heard good things about it and I'm an Nvidia guy myself), everything else is flexible. He dictated the amount of storage, and I suggested going for 8GB of RAM to start with, to be upgraded to 16GB at a later date, once he's convinced my mother to let him spend even more on this.

Really I just need advice on the motherboard and processor - is the I5 too much/too little, will that motherboard be sufficient (it seems like a steal to me)? Plus if there are cheaper alternatives to the other parts that perform just as well info on those would be appreciated.

    About buying RX 5700 XT

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 01:59 AM PDT

So here's the deal, right now i have RX 580 and R5 2600, the cpu I dont really plan to upgrade for a couple of years

I have a high refresh rate monitor and want to utilise it a bit better (want better graphics, dont wanna play on low settings)

So the question is, how much of a waste of money would be to get RX 5700 XT and keep that for at least 4 years and upgrade 2600 in 2 years?

sorry if im being unclear, my england bad

    75 Hz vs 144 Hz

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 12:58 PM PDT

If I am building a 1200$ computer that will be able to run most games at around 120 FPS, is it worth it to spend 50$ more on a 144hz monitor instead of a 75 Hz. Also, is it actually true that the human eye cannot tell a difference by 75 Hz and everything about that?

Can’t install OS on new system

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 11:26 AM PDT

So I finished building my pc (Ryzen 5 2400G, asrock b450 pro.4 mobo) and I cant install the windows OS on my hard drive. I have made the boot drive and every time I boot into it (from f11 single time select) it'll give me the blue screen. It can happen any any number of points and it'll give me a variety of error reasons. Some times it'll won't even load the boot drive, other times it'll get to actually downloading the windows file and then crash. Some of the error codes are: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED 0x000000EF

I'm not sure what to do. I've tried making the boot drive from another computer and it didn't help. Any ideas?

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Ryzen 9 3900X for build

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 11:04 AM PDT

The build I have planned currently has the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X inside of it. I've ordered everything except the CPU and GPU due to online stocks and wait-times, and in the waiting have begun to consider switching to the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X ( https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-3700X-16-Thread-Processor/dp/B07SXMZLPK/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=3700x&qid=1562789575&s=electronics&sr=1-1#HLCXComparisonWidget_feature_div ).

I am wondering what noticeable differences I would encounter? Is my build overkill and in need of a down-grade?

I know the motherboard I got can handle speeds up to 3600MHz, but the Ryzen 7 3700 only goes up to 3200. Would it be worth it to return the board for a new one, or keep it to make it more future-proof? And the Ryzen 7 3700 includes a cooler, but I still may use the be quiet! cooler that already delivered.I would primarily be using it for gaming and running some engineering programs--including Destiny 2, FPSs, RPGs, modding games, CAD programs, FEAs, etc. I am thinking about streaming, but if the build possibly can't handle playing and streaming at the specs of the monitor in the build, I could always use my laptop as the streaming pc and buy an Elgato.

    Thank you for your advice!

Edit: Another thought: I initially chose AMD due to the ability to multitask better than Intel (from what I saw while reading reviews and tests), but would it make more sense to swap to Intel if I would only be streaming with a 2 pc rig? (just another thought/question)

Computer powers up but no display, red cpu led

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 03:58 PM PDT

Finished putting together the computer and have turned on the power and the fans all spin but there is no signal to the display. The cpu led is red.

So far have tried removing ram and using only one stick and moving between ram slots. Pressed the MemOK button which made the DRAM led flash red. At one point the computer powered up for a second then shut off again. This was seemingly fixed by removing and then replacing the cooler.

The specs are: AMD fx-6300 black edition, 8GB DDR3, Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 motherboard, Asus gtx 980 strix 4gb, Cooler master hyper tx3 EVO cooler

Currently running with an old hard drive which was not formatted however have a fresh one available which could be connected instead.

[Build Help] Advice for cutting costs on my 144hz 1080p Gaming/Graphic Design/Video Editing PC?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 03:52 PM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I plan to use various Adobe Programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro) throughout the day, and play competitive games in the evening.

This is my first ever PC build, after getting to graduating University before I can afford more than a laptop - hence I don't need the best frame rates at the highest settings on the newest games. I'd be pleased just running games at this point, since the graphics card in my laptop died.

It's also worth mentioning that my plan/hope is to upgrade the graphics card if necessary and hopefully not much else in a couple years time, getting 4+ years out of this equipment.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

For now, Apex Legends on 144hz 1080p (already own the monitor) at Medium Settings would be a lovely end-result. I'm far more into "competitive" games than I am story games. However it would also be nice to be able to play the latest AAA games on ~60 fps even if at the lowest settings, as this has never even been an option for me before. I also play Rocket League a ton but it would be impressive to build a PC that couldn't run that game at 144 fps.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'd much rather not go above £1200 (~$1500) if possible, but any cut that won't majorly effect performance is what I'm looking for, as that cut will just go towards the rest of the setup (desk, chair, keyboard etc). I am willing to go to £1400 maximum if you can convince me it's a great idea.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    England, UK.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    My thoughts are:

    • Whilst it may be overkill for what I want, I feel the Ryzen 7 3700x is a no-brainer at my overall price point, both for future proofing and the multi-tasking abilities.

    • Motherboard and RAM I think are overkill, however I do care about future-proofing the system so it may be worth the extra price. From what I can tell they seem pretty good, but all the good ram I find is sold out so I'm not sure here. I see a lot of people recommend a x470 or b450 motherboard for Ryzen 3000 series, but I also see a lot of people having issues there that I would rather avoid. Unsure.

    • I really don't understand power supplies, everyone I know tells me to go way overkill (like 850W+), yet everything online implies you can go much lower than that without much of a risk?

    • My first ideas were around having a Ryzen 3700x with a RTX 2060 card, but that seems a little overkill for me, and so the 1660ti seems just right.

    • I would love rgb, but it may be cheaper to just add rgb strips inside the computer manually afterwards.

    • I do not understand the m.2 vs sata situation for SSD's, but the SSD i found seemed a good price so.

    • I don't need a ton of storage because I also own a laptop with plenty of storage on it.

Also, a fun side note, I'd love them led (rgb) strips for putting on the back-end of my desk to create a nice glow effect, however I'm not sure on the options/ price range here - any advice is appreciated.

    Hi folks,

Yesterday morning when I turned on my computer I got an odd bios message - something like, "Due to a voltage issue the system is not stable" and it was hanging on the American Megatrends boot screen- I rebooted and everything was fine. However, I started noticing a weird graphical glitch in my Chrome tabs at the top.

I thought nothing of it and proceeded with my day. I do video editing work and when I opened Premiere and went to export a project it crashed. No problem, I thought - this happens, so I rebooted and tried again. Another crash. Eventually I realized that the problem was happening ONLY when I tried exporting H.264 clips. I tried ProRes and H.265 and it seemed to run through okay. (Tried exporting with software only, no CUDA, and same crash only for H264).

However, now I noticed that the H.265 file which exported just fine has all sorts of weird graphical glitches in it. I tried opening it up in Premiere as well as VLC to confirm those glitches are burned into the file and not part of VLC/Premiere.

    So my problems are:

    1. Premiere crashes when trying to export H264 only, and after rebooting will crash randomly until a full system restart.
    2. Weird graphical / pixelated rainbow stuff in Chrome tabs.

My first instinct was that, paired with the odd power message I got that morning, there was a PSU issue. I live in an old building with crappy wiring and have had PSUs blow out on me once every three years or so. (I finally figured out the outlet I was using had no working ground connection - re-routed with an extension cord immediately to a working ground outlet so hopefully that helps).

So I went out today and got a new PSU - installed it and found the same issue.

My next suspect was my video card - so I ran FurMark at full load for like 15 minutes and everything was fine (monitoring temps and fan speeds with GPU-Z - all looked normal). Also ran AIDA64 for 20 mins at full CPU load, again, everything fine.

Tried updating Premiere, no change. Tried uninstalling the last video-related plugin I installed (BRAW Studio, which allows you to import BRAW files into Premiere) - no change. Updated my GTX 1070 drivers, no change.

This is driving me nuts! Feels like it's a dumb Adobe issue - and yet, why is it carried through to Chrome (and, it seems, other apps that have some transparency in the windows?). And if it's a hardware issue, why wasn't it revealed during the 100% stress test?

Any thoughts or advice - this is driving me nuts and I need to export projects for work.

    Thanks!

EDIT:Based on someone's suggest in the LTT forums I tried encoding a clip with Handbrake. Tried encoding in its standard H.264 setting twice and it crashed both times. Then tried H.265 and it worked... but the file, which will play, is filled with all sorts of random blocky pixels and noisey garbage. So weird! Tried encoding in Handbrake in MPEG-4 (MP4 and MKV) and the file came through perfectly. So for some reason my H264 and H265 encoding causes either a crash (in Handbrake or Premire) or for the file to come out full of garbage. What computer component does that relate to?

    EDIT #2:

I just tried encoding in Handbrake, H264 but WITH Nvidia NVEnc - and it worked perfectly for both H264 and H265. And in task manager I see the "Video Encode" percentage bar fills up to 50% as it's going, and it goes very quickly.

So now I'm suspecting maybe the CPU is the culprit? If the GPU can encode fine when forced to - but if the CPU can't - and who knows which Adobe is using (even though it should be a known quantity...) - maybe it's the CPU? But if that's the case, why is it that it can run AIDA64 just fine (and me monitoring temps, never go above 70).

How do one get a cheap/free laptop?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 03:37 PM PDT

Unfortunately for financial problem I had to sell my laptop, kept my desktop and I want to keep it.

I read some good stories about dumps diving/yard sales/bulk sales from companies but never actually did anything like this nor searched for it.

Is this still a thing? Any tips to get a cheap laptop just to take some tutorials on programming(web dev mainly)?

Eventually i will get a better one but for now i just need something cheap to be productive on my free time out of home.

Question about financing with Affirm for an EVGA RTX 2080?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 10:29 AM PDT

Pretty simple, is it worth it to finance one of these cards with Affirm? Does anyone here have any experience with them? I don't normally take out loans for things, but there's 0% apr at the moment on a lot of these cards and I feel like it'd be pretty easy to keep up with these payments and end up with no interest. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly apprectiated.
