Need help looking for a laptop, don’t know where to start

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 09:08 AM PDT

I need a laptop for my sophomore year of college, all I need it for is school stuff, my art program autodesk sketchbook and to play overwatch. It doesn't have to be touchscreen but it'd be awesome if so. If possible I want to keep it under $1k. Any help is appreciated!

    Huawei Matebook 13 i7 vs Asus Zenbook 14 UX433FN

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 05:12 AM PDT

Which one would you pick? They have the same CPU, GPU and SSD, but the Asus has 16gb RAM vs 8gb, a better battery life, more ports, is colder and more quiet. The only problem I have with the Asus is that it scores lower on CPU performance which is the most important thing for me. Why does the Asus score so low on CPU performance even though it's the same processor? Will the difference be significant? Does it outway all of the other perks?

Is the Dell XPS 15 good enough?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 07:34 AM PDT

I need a new laptop for school and I'm a graphic design student, I have been searching for the past few months but can't decide on anything. The Dell XPS 9570 peaked my interest but I'm not sure. Will this laptop hold up? I want something that I can rely on for a few years, but I'm wary of laptops that aren't macs which tend to last for quite a few years.

Bought the Dell Inspiron 7590 in Canada. Returned to US for school. Realized there is a dead pixel Should I fly back to Canada to exchange?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 09:36 AM PDT

I had an $1800 credit at Best Buy in Canada only so I took advantage of it while visiting family and purchased the Dell Inspiron 7590 (cost around $2300 total). I brought it back to the US and realized there is a dead pixel near the bottom right corner of the screen. I start medical school on Monday and I am wondering if I should fly back to Canada to exchange the laptop before school starts. Shipping would be difficult because I need the laptop to work

Is my GF's new 500+€ laptop better than my 1000+€ laptop?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 01:10 PM PDT

So we both independantly bought new laptops. She spent a lot of time comparing and finally got the asus s330ua while I just quickly checked the top recommendations my search machine showed for "best laptop 2019" and got the dell xps 13 9380. I am quite satisfied, but when we started comparing, I was kind of shocked. It seems like the specs are very similar, for some things her laptop is even better. Which makes me really doubt my choice.

Did I actually just pay 500€ extra for a brand name like you do it for brand clothes? Or are there any "hidden qualities" that I am overlooking? Those are the specs that I actually understand:

    specs xps13 9380, 1200+€ asus s330ua 700+€ comparision
Screen Full HD Full HD same
CPU i5-8265U 8. Generation i7-8550U dell slightly faster (6% according to benchmarks i found)
    GPU UHD-Grafik 620 UHD-Grafik 620 same
    RAM 8 GB LPDDR3 2133 MHz 8 GB LPDDR3, 2.133 MHz same
SSD PCIe-NVMe-SSD-Festplatte, 256 GB 512GB SATA SSD Asus better because it's bigger?
    height 7,8 mm - 11,6 mm (?) 1.79cm dell thinner
    weight 1,2kg 1,2kg same
Battery 52 Wh 4 Zellen 42Wh 3-cell Dell better, but no idea how much

can't compare the sound so far, since my dell has some issues with it (the speakers are horrible, like my budget smartphone), so I will exclude it until it's fixed.

I just can't really understand why the dell got this good ratings then.

Edit: Sorry for the wrong title. We just checked the prices again and it was about 1200€ and 700€. Still a big difference.

[General Question] What Size Screw do M.2 SSD use?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 01:00 PM PDT

I recently bought an Acer Predator Helios 300, which model allows for Two M.2 SSDs. One already installed, the other empty. There weren't any screws for the other slot so I need to buy them, are they all an universal size or is Acer one of those companies that have their "proprietary" screws/fittings so that end users don't f*** around inside with their hardware

Dell Precision 7510 - Switch to dedicated graphics (AMD FirePro W5170)

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 04:14 AM PDT

So recently I had the option of buying a used laptop from the company I work since they were going to replace all hardware.

I got a nearly new Dell Precision 7510. Very happy with it, it's blazing fast. Only thing I cannot get to work is the dedicated GPU (AMD FirePro W5170). When I'm working in Adobe Illustrator and go into GPU performance it shows the Intel onboard graphics. I've installed Planet Coaster just to see if that works and it also only shows the onboard graphics.

Is there something I have to turn on in the bios? I'm a Mac user and haven't really been in to Windows for the past couple of years.

Can you turn off the lights at the base of the ASUS Scar 3?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 09:09 AM PDT

I'm considering this laptop, but these lights are a deal breaker for me if they can't be turned off independently of the keyboard backlights.

At the base config, will the XPS 7590 have thermal issues?

I know the XPS 15 line has had thermal issues in the past. But if I get the base model: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-xps-15-laptop/spd/xps-15-7590-laptop/XNber5cr652Ps will I still have those problems?

Anyone here with experience on HP Pavilion x360 who can answer some questions?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 08:21 AM PDT

I've been trying to find a 2-in-1 on a very tight budget. I saw a deal on an HP Pavilion x360 with an i5 for $500.

Before I sell the stuff I'd need to in order to get it (it's for the kids), I have some questions that in having trouble answering.

    • First, does this come with an active pen/stylus? If not, is it at least compatible with one, including Windows ink? Googling it suggests it should come with one, but Best Buy's website makes no mention, even in the "what's included" section.

    • Second, is it true that none of the USB ports will charge anything? The site says "data transfer only" on each of the ports, which seems really strange.

    • Third, can I upgrade the RAM? Is any or all of it soldered?

    • Fourth, is the battery user replaceable? I've seen conflicting info online.

    • Finally, are there any empty spots for extra hard drives? This isn't as important, but it's something I've been told to ask...

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm kind of dumb, but, well I am. This is all rather new to me. Thank you for your help!

    Lenovo Y700 laptop...connect 4K display via USB3.0

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 11:56 AM PDT

My laptop has only a HDMI1.4 port....so I get an output of 3840x2160 resolution @30Hz....I have a 4K tv and cables (both verified by connecting thru PS4 pro) ...i thought this is a limitation of the HDMI port so i bought a docking station(also supports 4k) to get the output from USB 3.0 and connect via HDMI from docking station to my TV the output was still 30Hz....

Is there any way to increase the output to 60hz?

    my graphics drivers are

    Intel HD graphics 530

    Nvidia Geforce 960M

Based on my research both the drivers support 4k at 60 Hz.....what could i be missing here?

Can't type certain letters. I have to type another letter before I can type it.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:28 AM PDT

Example, I want to type the letter 'o'. If I'm starting a sentence with the letter 'o', the letter doesn't come out, no matter how hard I mash the button. If I type any letter/symbol, as long as it's not O, in a a timeframe of 0.5 seconds, the letter comes out. If I don't type it in that timeframe, the letter won't come out. So if I type 'N' then 'O', 'NO' comes out. If I type 'N' then 'O', but the 2nd letter is typed after 0.5 or more seconds, the letter doesn't come out. This problem also persists with the letter T and the Tab button. Maybe another button also has this problem, but I haven't typed every button to check. Does anyone have the same problem? And fixes? Do I have to give some of my Laptop's specs?

Determining if these two options are a good deal?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:27 AM PDT

Well the day finally came where I broke the screen on my college laptop. I'm in the market for a new one and my budget is $500-$750. I travel occasionally, but battery life isn't crucial. I mainly used the laptop for downloading movies, surfing the web (reddit), and watching videos, storing/posting pictures.

It just so happens that Sam's Club is having a big one day event on August 3rd and there appears to be some decent laptop deals..

I really don't know a whole lot about computers/laptops and was hoping someone could help me determine if any of these laptops are a good deal and good fit for me?

I'm mainly looking at this Dell which is $579 and this HP which is $499.

Thanks so much for any help or insight you can provide!

Extend the MSI Afterburner voltage curve

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:23 AM PDT

Extend the MSI Afterburner voltage curve

Just found out that you can extend the afterburner voltage curve. It will allow you to adjust the curve beyond the default minimum voltage and frequency. I used it for further undervolt my 2070 max q since the ambient temperature is reaching 33C.

You can config your voltage curve by the following steps:

    1. Locate the MSI afterburner main directory
    2. Find the file "MSIAfterburner.cfg"
    3. Open the file with Notepade++
    4. Search for lines "VFCurveEditor" (there should be 4 lines, which change the max and min for both frequency and voltage)
    5. Set the value as you wish and save
    6. Now you will see the extended graph when you open the voltage curve

    Hope this help.

Can you use ssds on mPCI express slots?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 02:02 AM PDT

I'm trying to get an ssd,but I have no other sata slot, according to HWiNFO:
PCI Express ports 5 and 6 are supported
    PCI Interface is not supported
PCI Express ports 7 and 8 are supported
    PCI Support is present
and a PCI Express slot with 1x/x1 data bus width
also in the power plan editor I have a PCI Express "section"
Not sure if all that means that I do have a PCI Express slot, but after looking it up most results said that laptops have mPCI slots.
After all that,my questions are,do I have a PCI Express slot, and if it is an mPCI express slot, can I use an ssd on it?

Laptop lil slow after removing virus?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 03:59 AM PDT

To keep it short, I downloaded a program but it was a apparently virus (ik my fault), where it changed my chrome into Russian homepage. then I downloaded malwarebytes to remove it and now everything went back to normal except the laptop started to become lil slow at opening anything and the boot time where it shows profile is also slower.

My laptop has nvme ssd and the normal boot time was about 20 sec, and now it seems to be 30-40 sec.

Is my only option is to reset the laptop? Is it possible to backup my installed programs?

EDIT: Surprisingly, I uninstalled malwarebytes and the laptop seems to be more quicker at opening stuff. However, the boot time seems to be the same so it's prob has to do with something else.

HP Spectre x360 15” vs Dell XPS 15

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 03:18 AM PDT

I was looking for a new laptop for university and I don't know which to chose

Both have the same specs 16 GB ram, 512 GB NVMeSSD, core i7-8750H and GTX 1050Ti (yes, I am aware dell has made the new xps with a core i7-9750H, but I don't think it's worth it for the price)

The spectre costs more, but it has a 4k touchscreen with included pen and is a 2in1, the XPS 15 has one more USB A port, but it has no numpad and a non touch 1080p screen (yes I am aware dell offers the 4K touchscreen, but it's not worth it for the price)

I've seen reviews on both and they say that the screen on the spectre has a slow pixel response time, the build quality a bit cheap and the trackpad isn't good

Which one would you choose and why?
