    The Old laptops 90s

    Posted: 14 May 2019 07:45 AM PDT

    Done with my MBP, looking to buy a new production/gaming laptop. Need advice please.

    Posted: 14 May 2019 01:20 PM PDT

    Hi all,

    Looking to buy a new laptop to use on the go for production as well as casual gaming, mostly Apex and RE2 type. I am a visual effects artist and believe it or not, I've been making due with a MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 model, its been serving me well, I've uped the ram, slapped an SSD on it and its been running good. The logic board burned like 4 times during the years but Apple fixed for free. Anyway, its time to move on to better things.

    I tried the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme but wasnt fully satisified. I loved the build, weight, keyboard, screen was ok (4K is too much for a 15", my scaling was at 200%). I would buy a 17" X1 in a heartbeat.

    Here is what I'm looking for and figured out so far:

    • I need a 17" inch screen. The X1 Extreme 15" just wasnt enough.
    • A 1440 or above display would be best. This will be hard I'm finding most laptops are at FHD at this moment. Honestly my Macbook Pro is pretty good at 1920x1200 on a 17".
    • I dont need Quadro/true workstation graphics. Most software I use Adobe, Foundry and C4D runs fine on consumer level GTX and RTX graphics. Plus I would like to game on this machine.
    • My current macbook is 6.6lbs I believe according to specs. I'm wiling to go up to the weight but not above. Ideally lower would be best, 5lbs like the X1 would be a dream.
    • A slick, productive look would be great, with slim bezel and good keyboard. Loved the Thinkpad X1 extreme look.
    • Upgradeablity would be great, access to ram or a second nvme. Is it possible to upgrade screen panels?
    • Battery is my lowest priority as I'm ok with being plugged in for heavy tasks.

    So far my eye is on these laptops. If I can get the community's feedback/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • Alienware 17m - RTX2060 version with 1440 120mhz panel and the bigger battery. Not a big fan of the shape and large bezels and logo head. But so far the best fit.
    • Razer Blade Pro 17 - waiting for this to be released. Looks fantastic, fits everything except the screen is only FHD.
    • MSI GS75 or Prestige - waiting for this to be released as well. Again only FHD screen and stupid ram in on the other side of the mobo. Looks like a hassle.
    • ROG zephyrus s gx701- not sure about this keyboard situation.

    What do you guys think. I'm open to shifting my priorities if it will serve having a workstation/gaming machine.

    Thanks in advance.

    Student Linux Based Budget Laptop

    Posted: 14 May 2019 01:10 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £400

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money. (Pref around 6-8GB RAM)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer a low profile laptop, maybe around 14" max.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux would be preferable to avoid the windows license cost, but okay if it came with windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" max

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly used for my comp sci. Will be running IDEs... lots of browser tabs

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard with keys that aren't spaced really far apart.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a main PC, so this will be used mainly for doing Linux models and light programming during university. I am mainly looking at something that is small and have a decent keyboard as I will be typing a lot.

    Laptop build help?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 12:55 PM PDT

    I've already decided on a laptop to buy, but there's the problem. I'm under a super strict budget (€200 or $224 as of 14 may) and I'm new to laptop s. I've never owned one (shocker) and the only stuff I'm familiar with is a ps4 and android. My laptop to buy is not the best but I'm hoping to manually upgrade it. I'm scared to even compare an intel celeron and an i3 or switch them around in the future for a asus 710 GeForce GT 710 (no clue what that is but a friend says that's ok for my budget). Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking your time to read this.

    Helping a friend buy a laptop.

    Posted: 14 May 2019 12:41 PM PDT

    (Ok so couldn't copy the form exactly for some reason. Reddit wouldn't let me.)

    —Budget and country—::

    USA. They said no budget but I'd rather not let it fly above 1500 USD.

    — Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?—::

    Doesn't really matter. My friend has a ton to spend so I don't need "bang for the buck" kinda deal. Of course, I want the "bang" part but it doesn't need to be cheap. Not sure what form factor means but you guys will be able to suggest the right one I'm sure.

    —Weight and thinness—::

    Doesn't matter. In fact, wouldn't the thin ones overheat when gaming? Never had a laptop so wouldn't really know.

    —OS—::

    Windows 10.

    —Screen size—::

    Isn't the standard for 1080p between 15' and 17'? Something around there. I don't want my friend to have to squint lol.

    —Programs / games—::

    It'll be for gaming and general internet use.

    —Gaming—::

    We usually play all kinds of games together. New games, old games. I'm sure she'll want it looking pretty, so graphics-wise, we're going for high to ultra. Medium will be fine too, but with her budget, I don't see why at least high wouldn't be possible for all games.

    —Specific requirements—::

    As far as specs go, there isn't much in mind. Perhaps an 8th gen CPU, RTX 2060? I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking lol. But most importantly... It would be so preferable if it were cool. Not like slick aviator sunglasses cool, but the not-gonna-overheat cool. I'm used to desktop gaming so when I looked at reviews of laptops, I was, to be honest and fair, shocked by how hot they got. I looked up some pretty candidates but even those went up to the low-mid 90's. My friend probably would shrug but I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to cooling, so I'd definitely like to get her something that won't burn up. Thanks!

    Thoughts on the surface book 2?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 12:11 PM PDT

    Hiya folks,

    So I have the opportunity to grab a surface book 2 or a surface pro 6 from a friend for the same price and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. I'm a second year in University so having something light is definitely appealing, but the 1050 in the surface book is also pretty appealing, as well as the extra battery the keyboard adds for the sb2. So yeah. If anyone has any stories about loving or hating those laptops I'd love to hear them!

    Best Laptop Under $300

    Posted: 14 May 2019 06:47 AM PDT

    Buying a new gaming laptop. Toughts? Suggestions?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 06:27 AM PDT

    Hey guys, I'm writting here since I still do not know which would be the best option for me. I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop that costs about 1600$ and I came across some options. I have read and watched some reviews but still can't decide which one I should get, so I'm writting here to get your toughts on the matter.

    First off, I'm from Serbia, and have not found many laptops I liked, however, I am considering to order online or going abroad to buy.

    The specs I would like my laptop to have: 1. Nvidia GTX 1060 or higher 2. 16GB RAM or higher 3. 144Hz monitor (not a must, but would preffer a lot) 4. 1080p or higher

    If possible without ruining performance, I would preffer the laptop not to look too "beafy" or "gamer" like. One more thing I do need my laptop to do is to last long. My current laptop is a TOSHIBA c55 satelite and is almost falling apart after a bit over 4 years.

    The current games I would like to play are Apex Legends, Battlefiled 1 and 5. However I'd like my laptop to run new games on normal settings and above 60 FPS after even after a few years.

    Here are some laptops I found : 1. DELL G3 15 Full HD, Intel i7-8750H, 16GB(up to 32GB), 512GB SSD, GTX 1050Ti 4GB

    2.DELL G3 17 Full HD, Intel i7-8750H, 16GB RAM(up to 32GB), 1TB + 128GB SSD, GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB

    3.ACER Predator Helios 300 , Intel® Core™ i7 8750H up to 4.1GHz, 17.3", 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM(up to 32GB), GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

    Im leaning towards ACER's Helios the most, however, I have seen a few videos saying that the screen is not the best. (Linus Tech Tips review on youtube).

    All those are in my price range or just a bit above (which I'll manage somehow).

    If you have more sugestions for me, or toughts on my options please comment. Thank you for reading :)

    When is the best time to buy new laptop?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 06:38 AM PDT

    Hi,
    I am a student soon going to uni. As I will have to travel a lot I need a laptop which will be suitable for my occasional gaming. My question is whether is it a safe choice to buy a laptop (Asus Zenbook pro) now or rather wait a few months? (Whether a new release is coming this year or not)

    I am not following the usual schedule of new hw releases, so I am glad to be advised what will be the best option.

    Can you use Duel channel with a 4gb DDR4 ram and a 16Gb DDR4?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 02:17 AM PDT

    My laptop was said to have 2x8gb and for a year and a half my laptop ran games not the best, soon found out there's only 1 stick of ram using single channel, so, do I have to get 2x8gb and sell my 16Gb as I do not need another 16 gb or can I add 4gb for duel channel? Both ram would be 2400mHz

    is there a utility that doesn't put laptop to sleep when lid is closed but then does after x time has passed?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 01:26 AM PDT

    There was something similar in old lenovo utility: it stayed on when lid closed if connected to same wifi for n time.

    I want something different. I can set lid closed to do nothing with battery. But, after a set amount of time, say 15 minutes, i want it always go to sleep or actually, hibernate. Even if it's playing 3 videos and rendering one, because the lid is closed and 15 minutes later it might be in a bag already.

    Does a utility like this exist, or do I have to write on in autohotkey?

    The 144hz vs 4K Conundrum on a SAGER NP9176, RTX 2080, I9 9900K with overclock.

    Posted: 13 May 2019 11:48 PM PDT

    I'm purchasing the best laptop I've found for gaming graphics. But I'm having a huge issue. The display choices on this laptop are as follows.

    "17.3" Full HD 144Hz, Wide View Angle 72% NTSC Matte Display with G-SYNC Technology (1920 x 1080)("

    "17.3" 4K QFHD Matte Display with G-SYNC Technology (3840 x 2160)"

    Truly, I have no idea what half of that stuff means. But I'm aware of the choice between these two. And I want to ask a question in order to help with the decision. I play just about every type of game. This includes occasional online shooters. But with power like that, I could probably run anything at 4K handily. Is it worth the 144hz monitor when the laptop is capable of such amazing feats? I wanted something that would be powerful and beautiful way into the future, but the either or of graphics vs smoothness has halted me.

    When did the Spectre X360 w/t 1050 ti come out?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 10:30 PM PDT

    I'm considering picking up one of these for an upcoming business trip, but I can't figure out when they came out in order to see if a new one is coming right around the corner. I see Lenovo's already launching their 9th gen Intel stuff with slightly updated Nvidia graphics, and my trip isn't for a couple of months now.

    From what I can find, I see articles declaring its existence in November of 2018, but reviews don't start appearing until late February, with almost all of them being in March of 2019. I still can't find one to test at any Best Buy either (just out of curiosity of fan noise).

    Any ideas?
