    Simple Questions - February 02, 2019

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 04:12 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

DDR5 will be here next year!! But will it actually be an upgrade?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:54 AM PST

So DDR5 will be here next year! This is excellent as it means 5200 MT/sec/pin data transfer rate, which is 60% faster than the 3200 MT/s rate officially supported by DDR4. Meanwhile the DRAM operates at 1.1 Volts, a 9% decrease in operating voltage.

The speeds of the DDR5 will be able to go up to 6400 MT/sec/pin. (CAS Latency is unknown).

That sounds amazing right? Faster is always better. But, is it? I hear RAM speed really doesn't matter too much on newer Intel builds, and while AMD builds do see improvement, is it really even that much?

So the the question is; is RAM speed (not size) EVER a bottleneck? In what applications will this twice as fast ram see actual tangible improvements over current DDR4 3200 RAM?

Edit: woah, what's with the down votes? I'm not saying it's going to be pointless, I'm genuinly curious if/where we will see improvements... Or if it will be like SSD VS nvme where the improvements are only seen in very specific tasks

Edit: woah x2. This went from very unpopular, to super popular all within one miserable gym work out. I'd trade all of your worthless up votes to not feel like death again.

Completed my first ever build - Random things I learned/takeaways

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:08 AM PST

I recently completed my first build. Researched a lot prior to building and gladly it booted on the first try. Everything runs butter smooth and performs well on benchmarks.

    Inside

    Setup

    Lights On

    Parts

    Imgur album

Here are some random personal takeaways I had during the whole process (buying and building)

    • SSDs are really light
    • Should have waited a bit longer for the 2060 (same performance, cheaper price) or paid a bit more for the 2070
    • Having a video play along side while building was really helpful. I had Bitwit's and several videos on how to mount specific parts playing.
    • Easiest part was the CPU and RAM installation
    • Hardest/Tiresome would be the AIO pump mounting
    • Extension sleeved cables made it pain to cable manage at the back due to the added length
    • There is a lot of screwing and unscrewing involved in the whole building process (mainly things are sometimes hard to reach)
    • Motherboard manual is your best friend
    • It was kinda hard to mount the SSD because my PSU only came with angled SATA cables
    • Always make sure all the power cables are fully inserted (most of my cables were loose before double checking)
    • There are a lot of drivers to install
    • 144hz feels soooooo smooth

Here is the full parts list:

    Type Item
    CPU AMD - Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
CPU Cooler Cooler Master - MasterLiquid ML240L RGB 66.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

    i9-9900k motherboard questions

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:29 PM PST

Doing my 1st build and I've read a lot about motherboards needing a BIOS update before being able to run the i9s.

Does anyone know if the ASUS Prime Z390-A LGA 1151 will be able to run it direct out of the box? Being my first build i don't have an older cpu available to update the BIOS.

If not any other recommendations of motherboards that would work out of box would be great!

How good is the Ryzen 7 1700x?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:18 AM PST

There is a pretty solid deal on Newegg.ca for Ryzen 7 1700x but not sure if it is worth spending the cash. I would be upgrading from a FX 8320 which is pretty freaking dated and badly needs to be replaced. Is this a decent cpu strictly for gaming?

    Hello.

I just bought 16GB DDR4 3000MHz memory. I enabled XMP Profile in the BIOS yet CPUz still reads 1066.4MHz.

I have an AMD build with the B350M Pro motherboard.

    Thank you for any help.

My m.2 drive not recognized (part 3)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:58 PM PST

So this shit has been going on for so long. My NVMe drive (with OS) is not recognized by BIOs after restarting comp, after reinstalling win10 and restarting a couple of times. My regular 2.5 ssd is recognized no problem.

I changed nvme 3 times. Changed mobo 3 times. Even changed brand of mobo from Asus to ASRock. Default settings, didnt touch BIOs. Updated bios in last mobo, same problem.

The strange thing is the case power LED stays on even after i shut down the comp.

At this point, Im suspecting my PSU or my custom cablemod 24 pin connector....

Looking to upgrade CPU, Mobo, and RAM

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:35 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Ever since I got into streaming I wanted to upgrade my PC. This PC was built in 2014 and I've only upgraded the GPU since. Now I kinda need to upgrade my RAM Mobo and CPU because of the bottleneck. I'll be buying my parts from amazon and then shipping it to my home country.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) Should be able to run games on highish on the listed monitor.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

my budget is around $550 but it's VERY flexible

i5-6600k vs i5-7600k Which is Better Buy?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:29 PM PST

I found on letgo a i5-6600k for $75. He said he has had it since June 2016 and overclocked it to 3.9 for 2 months. As well I found on letgo a i5-7600k for $100 and I'm unknown to how long he's had it but he said it was slightly overclocked. I have a i3-6100 right now with a z170a Krait Gaming Motherboard , 16gb ddr4 , Gtx 1060 6gb So what would be the better buy and I'm hoping to upgrade to a 1080 someday

Why do peaple pay more for faster ram?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:28 PM PST

I have always wondered why people pay a premium for faster ram, isn't it possible to just get cheaper, slower ram then overclock it? If it is the same capacity shouldn't everything be the same as long as the clock speeds are the same?

    Custom loop

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:35 AM PST

Hello all, I'm wanting to do my own custom loop but I have some questions. I want to do both my GPU and CPU in a custom loop, will I need 2 separate radiators? Also I'm using the NZXT H500i case so I can only use one 280mm radiator and a 120/140mm radiator, if In fact I do need separate radiators for my cpu/gpu. Would a larger case for larger radiators be almost necessary? Also, any ideas on which brand or kit I should go with.

    Any info would be great.

Does anyone here have advice for keeping the HDMI cable plugged into a downward-facing monitor?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:18 PM PST

I have an Asus VC239H which has downward-facing inputs, and my HDMI cable slips out every once in a while. There's not really anything I can attach a string or rubber band to, and I don't really want to put tape on my monitor. Does anyone have advice for how to keep this from happening?

    Are older Xeons worth it?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:14 PM PST

My current PC was build back in 2013 and currently has the following specs:

    • Intel i7-3820
    • Asus P9X79 Deluxe Mother Board
    • GTX 970
    • 16 gb DDR3 1333mhz RAM

So I've been throwing around the idea of building a new PC for the last year or so. I've been doing less gaming lately, but I've started doing more work in Adobe Premier and Blender. With these applications I've really been feeling the age of my PC. I had originally thought my mobo was capped at 3rd generations Intel processors, but after doing a bit more research I discovered that my mobo is compatible with some higher end Xeon processors, a Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 12 core CPU!

So my question to you guys is the following. Do you think I should upgrade to the E5-2697 v2? I've looked on ebay and found people selling them used for around $300. I figure I can do this and throw in another 32 or so gb of RAM and have a pretty decent machine for video editing and 3D modeling. I understand that the single core performance of the E5-2697 is lower then my current CPU, but I play so little Triple A games now-a-days that I don't think it will be much of an issue. Have any of you guys personally bought used hardware off Ebay? This would be my first time doing it so I'm a bit nervous doing so.

I also like the idea of being able to convert my PC to a home server if I ever decide to build a new PC in the future.

    Ryzen 7 2700 vs. i5 8600

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:14 PM PST

I am worse than a nube here, but am hoping for some advice. My 9yr old Mac has given out on me, so I'm in the market for a new computer. I've done a little video editing on iMovie and camtasia, but kind of just stumbling around. I would like to do a bit more, but mostly I do large spreadsheets with a lot of matrix calculations and some database stuff, so that's what I want to use the computer for. When I look at comparisons between Ryzen 7 2700 and i5 8600 and i7 8700, on youtube it seems to be all focused on gaming, which I don't do, and don't plan to. For my planned uses, is there a better processor family between the R7 2700 and i5 8600 and i7 8700 and why? Thanks in advance for input.

Intel B360 Chipset and 9th Gen CPU issues

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:01 PM PST

    Howdy all,

I've recently taken to upgrading my PC, but have run into some issues. I purchased an MSI B360-A Pro motherboard as it listed the i5 9600K Processor as being compatible. I received my motherboard and have installed it, but when I finally went to install my CPU today (as I have just received it), the computer appeared not to POST. I get fan spin and lights, but no output of any description. Upon consulting the MSI site, I discover that the B360-A Pro doesn't actually support 9th Gen CPUs if theyre made before october 2018, and mine was made in March. I have installed a brand new i5 9600K into my PC, so I can't really return it or sell it, and I can't flash the BIOS as I have no compatible CPU. What the hell do I do?

Edit: Full PC Specs in case it's useful
    MSI B360-A Pro

    Intel i5 9600K

    Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB DDR4 2400MHz

I've bent my cpu pins and PC doesn't boot

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:52 AM PST

So I was trying to get my newly bought cooler into my pc and as I was removing the stock ryzen 5 2600 cooler it created a vacuum and once the cpu came off with the cooler it had like 5-10 bent pins. I unbent them as best as I could with a razer blade but now after putting it back in my pc doesnt boot. Any help?

EDIT: After 3 hours of troubleshooting i managed to fix everything and the cpu seems to be working fine.
