The shift key on the right side of the keyboard, beneath the enter key, is too short. My pinky would often hit the arrow key instead of shift while typing. Errors galore! Damn shame, because I really wanted to love the laptop and I was ready to pay the money. But I just can't deal with the keyboard layout.

I thought I'd mention this for other prospective buyers to think about. It's not anything I've seen in any review. But it's true; the keyboard layout has a pretty bad flaw if you're any good at typing.

    Gaming laptop suggestions

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 07:49 AM PST

Hi friends! Some background info: I've played WoW since I was like 9 back in 2006. I played using my parent's desktop up until I bought my own laptop in like 2013. It only recently gave me the BSOD and while I know laptops aren't really the best way to play games on PC, I'd like to know if there are any good gaming laptops out there for a decent price ($700 or less) that I can also use for my podcasting/blogging/music journalism. I'm not a hardcore PC gamer by any means, just haven't played WoW in awhile and wanna get on some private servers again for the nostalgia lol. My main focus will definitely be the creative side so the portability is a must but still want something that runs games well. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Why does this kind of laptop not exist?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 01:37 AM PST

    Hello community,

why isn't there any lightweight cheap laptop with a decent screen but otherwise shitty specs?

In times where good wifi is available almost everywhere you can connect to your windows server or home PC via RDP and use its computing power. No need for any high-tech fancy CPU & RAM in the laptop if its just for the office job.

But it seems like no notebook is built around this possibility, or am i wrong?

Chromebook might have been an attempt but the project is basically gone.

    Any ideas?

    Best cheap laptop for college?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 06:32 AM PST

For my first little under two years at college I've had an ASUS laptop, until last year it was working fine until it forced an update when I wasn't on it and it wasn't plugged in, which it died during and then had a plethora of other issues, so I did a factory restart but it hasn't been working as good since. Anyways it's extremely frustrating to use and even now when all I have is word and Spotify open it can barely run. I reset it, nope. Hard reset and then it started updating, then reset again and removed the update and I've just been waiting like 15 minutes now.

That was just me venting, I'm sure some blame is on me or whatever, but I've taken good care of it otherwise. Anyways what would be a good cheap laptop for college? I'm not doing anything super high tech on it, I just want it to last, atleast longer then this piece of crap. My price range is like 500-750$ preferably. I will really only use it for school work and maybe like Minecraft of hearts of iron occasionally. Any suggestions? My main concern is longevity and performance.

    Vinyl wrap OP 15?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 12:22 PM PST

Does anyone know of a premade wrap for the OP 15? I think you can vinyl wrap by buying some cheap vinyl from eBay but I'm a bit lazy and would rather buy something that has already been cut to spec. I want to wrap the palm rest since it cuts a bit and also the lid to hide the logo.

Does anyone know of a solution?

Second SSD in Acer Swift 3 SF314-52G-55WQ

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 11:53 AM PST

I can't seem to find a confirmed answer for this one.

I opted for this cheaper Acer because I only need 8GM of RAM but am considering getting the newer version if I can't put another SSD in it.

So does anyone know if this model has a second m.2 ssd slot or not? I'm seeing a lot of conflicting answers.

Brand new Asus Zenbook UX533. GPU under load=no Wi-Fi and others

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 11:57 PM PST

Hello guys. I have recently bought the Asus Zenbook UX533 and I have a few questions.

First of all, CPU temperature at idle is anywhere between 39-45°C. Isn't that too high? While playing League of Legends on medium low settings, the CPU stays at 70°C and the GPU at 68. This is my first ultrabook and I'm worried about overheating.

Then I have had this problem: whenever I use the dedicated GPU my Wi-Fi stops working. I found a fix for that but still, that's anormal and I was wondering if it's worth sending it to service under Asus warranty.

Also, the touchpad makes an annoying sound when I lift the fingers from it while scrolling, I guess that's not fitted properly to the inner elements. Has anyone else experienced this?

    The specs are:

    i7 8565u GTX1050 Max-Q, 2GB 8GB RAM 256 M.2 SSD

    Thank you.

Nvme SSD for laptop (Ideapad 330s)

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 04:08 AM PST

I bought an Ideapad 330s recently and I'm planning on installing an SSD since it only has a harddrive installed and I knew that it would run a whole lot better with the OS on an SSD. Through some research, I found that my laptop could support another drive aside from the installed one. However, I'm pretty sure it has to be nvme.

On to my dilemma. All I've found on the interwebs are people who've installed Samsung's 970 evo on laptops similar to mine (ideapad 330s). The said SSD is a out of my budget right now as I'm also planning to add more RAM. The only other nvme SSD's readily available in my country is the Adata XPG SX8200 pro 256gb and the Plextor M8Pe 128gb which is at roughly the same price and within my budget.

I was wondering if any of you had had experiences with the installing the 2 SSD's I've mentioned in your laptops. I'm just curious if it could fit my laptop and of the thermal implications. I'm not too interested in performance as anything other than a 5400 rpm disk would be so much better IMO.

    Thanks.

I decided to clean my laptop by myself, now I notice it’s quite a bit louder, and would ramp up more when i played games on it. Is this normal?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 10:03 AM PST

I cleaned off some dust bunnies off of it's fan, brushed it off with a fine brush. A touch of compressed air, and put it back together. Did I do something wrong?

Student Laptop Recommendations, seems like each option is plagued with reviews mentioning poor quality

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 12:56 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
$500 ish, but flexible depending on the value of each option. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Prefer best bang for my buck, but not willing to compromise build quality for it. I'd much rather have a slightly slower laptop that will last me a longer amount of time.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight doesn't matter much to me. Thinness is also negligible, as long as I don't carry around a huge textbook for a laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, can't use ChromeOS either.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
No preferred screen size, but would enjoy a nice resolution.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No video editing, but plan to play some OSU and watch CS:GO demos. I play some other games occasionally but they are super light games made with python or Java, anything recent will run them just fine.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not planning to game hardcore on it, but would be nice to be able to run OSU (to play, 100+ fps) and CS:GO (for demo viewing, at least 60 fps). I usually put everything on low in everything I do.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality is most important. SSD is also a must. A touch screen that uses a stylus would be fantastic but I can always buy a tablet for that. Not too picky honestly.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Mostly going to be doing homework, watching Twitch, Anime, Youtube. I'm currently learning Spanish and want to learn Japanese, so the touch screen and stylus would help me practice my writing while I use duolingo, I assume. Most of my gaming will be done on my PC so don't hesitate to recommend me something youd think I enjoy, even if it wont run those games I listed.

Everything I look up within my budget seems to have quality issues, specifically some of the Acer's I see that are recommended here. Do you think it'd be worth waiting for AMD's new line of laptop CPUs?

    Thanks :)

    Battery dead?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 12:37 AM PST

So, I think I've had my lenovo z50 for about 4-5 years, still works great, but the battery seems near death. Unplugged it lasts max 25 minutes. Now would replacing the battery solve this? (I assume I've killed the battery myself by leaving it plugged in for too long)

If so, I assume it's safest to try and get it from Lenovo themselves, right? But they don't make them anymore, I may need a bit help.. Is it safe to replace the battery with one from a different producer? Sorry if this is obvious, I've never actually replaced any parts of any laptop.

    1K AUD Laptop

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 12:36 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    1000 AUD, Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Im basically trying to find a 2in1 with light gaming specs and can last 6 hours

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I can handle upto 3kg and thinness under 3cm

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows ONLY

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Nothing smaller than 13" but nothing bigger than 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Light gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

CSGO mainly, 60FPS, 1080p but can be low graphics

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Fingerprint, aluminium only and a decent keyboard

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
