Amazon Fire HD 10 insists on writing its own files/folders to my MicroSD card, even though I've disabled ALL MicroSD writing options. How do I stop this!?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:34 PM PDT

I have a micro SD card I use across 2 tablets. I store only pics, audio & video on there, and thats all I want to store on it (not apps or app data), but when I insert it into my Fire HD 10, even though I have all of the MicroSD writing options disabled ("install compatible apps to SD", "download this and that to SD" etc, all OFF), I keep finding a set of folders written to the SD every time I plug it in: "Android" and ".Secure Android".

How do I stop this from happening every time I plug my SD into the Fire 10? Every time I delete them, and every time they come back...

    Thanks

how to verify apk authenticity and chain of trust

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 03:35 PM PDT

    Hi, I'm bit of a paranoid :P

I want to verify if a apk is legit, i'm on linux (debian) and there's a command called apksigner (from the package with same name). For instance a want to verify the whatsapp from apkmirror I got this output:

apksigner verify --verbose --print-certs com.whatsapp.w4b_2.18.71-227_minAPI15\(armeabi\)\(nodpi\)_apkmirror.com.apk Verifies Verified using v1 scheme (JAR signing): true Verified using v2 scheme (APK Signature Scheme v2): true Number of signers: 1 Signer #1 certificate DN: CN=Brian Acton, OU=Engineering, O=WhatsApp Inc., L=Santa Clara, ST=California, C=US Signer #1 certificate SHA-256 digest: 3987d043d10aefaf5a8710b3671418fe57e0e19b653c9df82558feb5ffce5d44 Signer #1 certificate SHA-1 digest: 38a0f7d505fe18fec64fbf343ecaaaf310dbd799 Signer #1 certificate MD5 digest: 556c6019249bbc0cab70495178d3a9d1 Signer #1 key algorithm: DSA Signer #1 key size (bits): 1024 Signer #1 public key SHA-256 digest: f1de30ca96948e887cf743c792498851ad019a294169d93202b4ce772656540f Signer #1 public key SHA-1 digest: 41688e3470d2c4d31648d4f48d2e629cabc
    • ok the apk verifies , but is this certificate the whatsapp's team certificate? (chain of trust)
    • it's signed with 1024 DSA key, isn't that broken?

    thanks

Google Photo's issue from close to 3 years ago still not resolved.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:37 PM PDT

To this day, Google Photos can't restore your backed up photos en masse when you "free up space". This forum thread from close to 3 years ago the only way I've seen to even restore them, and you have to resynchronization them one by one. On over a thousand photos this gets tiresome fast. Is there any way to retrieve the photos without spending 3 business days doing thumb excersizes?

Software update went bad and my Xperia XZ Premium is nonfunctional. What can I do?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 08:47 PM PDT

My phone (Sony Xperia XZ Premium international unlocked version) got a software update today and I started having issues immediately: there was a persistent "Preparing SD card" notification, apps constantly force closed, and most of the time I tried to open an app all I'd see was a menu bar and white screen. No content ever loaded.

So I went to the Reset menu and did a factory data reset and it didn't help anything. The keyboard wouldn't display during any of the setup menus (WiFi, log into Google account, etc.) and when I finally got to my home screen i had the same force close/phantom app issues as before.

I can't do anything on this phone as is and the normal factory reset tool isn't "factory" enough, but I don't know what else to do. I'm seeing mixed information on whether the XZ Premium has the ability to boot into recovery mode so I'm not sure I can even do that. Any other options?

Is there a way to remotely access/delete secure folder files?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 08:45 PM PDT

Phone got stolen today and I had sensitive information in secure folder. I'm worried it may get tempered with or published. Should I be worried or is that too much a hastle for scum trying to make a quick buck?

Was wondering if there was a way to remotely delete it's contents with my google/samsung account.

    Thanks!

Why can't I access my USB stick when plugged into my Amazon Fire HD 10? It shows up as "recognised" so I don't understand whats wrong...

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:20 PM PDT

I've recently bought an Amazon Fire HD 10 and I've got a few big files on a double USB-stick (1 side is USB3, the other is Micro-USB). When I plugged the USB stick into the Fire 10's micro-USB socket, I got a notification saying "connected to blah blah stick name" and a USB logo shows up. When I open a file-browser app (I use 7Zipper, but also tried X-Plorer) to access the stick, I can't see it in the storage list, it isn't there at all. How can it not be there? The tablet knows I plugged it in, it knows what its called and knows its a USB stick so how do I access it? 7Zipper even has its OWN notification when I plug it in "External USB has been connected" (or something similar) but it still doesn't appear anywhere!

Surprisingly "Google is your friend" does NOT apply to this question!

    Thanks in advance!

    Custom ringtone doesn't ring

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 06:03 PM PDT

Android custom ringtone plays in the rington selector but not when receiving a call. It work fine when I added it to the ringtones directory (6months and several system updates ago). Android 8.1.0 with April 5th patch level. Pixel sailfish. From Google store on VZW. Ring tone is mono made with the latest audacity build. I'll have to lookup bit rate if you all think that's important.

Phone usage statistics for entire lifespan?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 03:28 PM PDT

Does anyone know if it's possible to see general usage statistics of an android phone?

I'm still using an old nexus 4 and was wondering if it would be possible to see stuff like total screen on time, amount of battery recharge cycles etc. for the entire lifespan of the phone. That would be really interesting. Thanks!

Copying a Sim to use multiple phones?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:13 PM PDT

I've been trying out some different phones lately and because of my job I tend to carry a cheaper phone at work, and my more expensive ones when I'm home or off.

After constantly having to remove my sim card when swapping the phone, I thought maybe there's a way to duplicate my sim card so I can just have the same sim in all my phones, and not have to swap it out constantly. I've been googling ways this could be possible on a US phone with AT&T service, but I've got a couple questions for people who know more about this than I do.

    1. Is this a reason my carrier could cancel my service? I'd only be using one phone at a time. This is strictly to save me from having to move the card constantly. I'm NOT attempting to use multiple phones with the same sim card at once.

    2. Is it even possible? I see there's many variants of sim cards so I'm having a hard time discerning if I can even do this in the first place.

    Thanks for any help!

Apps are locking me out from using them without accepting mandatory massive upgrades to them, which I don't want to do and can't. Is there an solution to this?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:22 PM PDT

So today, I ended up late for work because Lyft is trying to force me to update the app and won't let me use it without updating it. It's a massive update and my phone doesn't have room for it. I need to use Lyft to get to work as a backup option, but I'm not going to erase every single thing on my phone for it. This bullshit really pisses me off. Apps locking you out from using them unless you accept massive updates to them which eats up all your phone's storage space. Not to mention all the bloatware bullshit that comes on the phone that they won't let you erase, and the massive space the pointless Google Play Services eats up. This mandatory 1 gig update requirement is also why I can't use Google Hangouts and many other apps I need.

I am seeking a solution for this. I mainly want to root my phone and I've tried to do so in the past, but after searching online, they told me I couldn't because it's Android 5.1.1. Second option would be an app that automatically lets me download apps and updates directly to my SD card, where I have 16 GB of space. My phone's internal storage only holds 2 GB and after reaching 90% capacity, refuses to let you download anything more without clearing space, anyway. Even if you try to make the SD card the main storage space in the Settings option, they still refuse to let you download anything once the phone's internal memory is at 90%. Third option would be any conceivable way to bypass the mandatory update lockout keeping me from using my apps. I am seeking any workable solutions that doesn't involve deleting every single thing on my phone. Thanks.

    Repurpose an old phone.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 10:04 PM PDT

I have an old Xiaomi Redmi 2 device that is no longer used. The LCD is failing, it's getting very dim and soon will be out completely. I was thinking in repurposing it like a Debian PC with a micro USB to HDMi MHL adapter but I'm not sure if the Redmi 2 is compatible with this. I haven't found any information about this. Is this possible?

How to disable an app without replacing it with the factory version?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 10:09 AM PDT

The Google Play Terms of Service says:

Updates. Google Play, related support libraries, or Content may need to be updated, for example, for bug fixes, enhanced functions, missing plug-ins and new versions (collectively, "Updates"). Such Updates may be necessary in order for you to use Google Play or to access, download, or use Content. By agreeing to these Terms and using Google Play, you agree to receive such Updates automatically. You may be able to manage Updates to certain Content via Settings in Google Play. If it is determined, however, that the Update will fix a critical security vulnerability related to the Content, the Update may be completed irrespective of your Update settings in Google Play or your Device. If another app store attempts to update Content that was initially downloaded from Google Play, you may receive a warning or such updates may be prevented entirely.

The problem is that I have a cheap mobile that will be very slow if the forced updates are done while I'm doing something else. Furthermore, they don't say if it can consume data or if it will only be done with wifi.

I wanted to disable the Google Play Store app and activate it only when I want to install/update apps to avoid the forced updates. But when I disable it, he asks me to replace it with the factory version. This means that I would always use a very old version and probably he will install a forced update every time I activate it.

I use the Amazon Store meanwhile, but some apps are missing...

Trouble Connecting S8+ to Win10 Mobile Hotspot

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:09 PM PDT

    Hello!

As the title states, I'm having issues connecting my S8+ to my PC. I'm using the Win10 Hotspot feature (using a USB wireless adapter as an access point) to connect to my phone (and not vice versa, i.e. I'm not trying to use mobile data).

The connection shows up on my phone, I can access it, but I get the "Internet may not be available" message and no error code, so I'm at a loss trying to troubleshoot it.

I've assigned it a static IP from my router (192.168.1.91, gateway 192.168.1.1), and still no luck. DNS 1 and 2 are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively.

Have any of y'all had any experience with this issue? Thanks!

    Problem installing OpenGapps.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 04:50 PM PDT

Hey guys, Just flashed an Lineage14 Nighlty on a Moto X 13(XT1058) but when I tried to flash opengapps it showed an error about not being compatible. Searching around I found it had something about my TWRP version being too outdated, so I went and downloaded the newest TWRP.img and flashed it to update. After doing that, my TWRP won't open at all, so I can't install openGapps now. The system boots just fine, I can start recovery normally and run without problems but without openGapps I can barely do nothing on my phone. Any thoughts guys? Please.

How do Google and Samsung's “find my device” service can bypass Android's Secured Lock Screen ?

So how do Google and Samsung's "find my device" service can bypass Android's Secured Lock Screen (https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/7-ways-bypass-androids-secured-lock-screen-0165540/ ) ?
